shark attack shark attack NY FELLAS tedbunker&tedbuddy A shark attack is an attack on a human by a shark. Every year, a number of people are attacked by sharks, although most survive. Despite the relative rarity of shark attacks, the fear of sharks is a common phenomenon, having been fueled by the occasional instances of attacks, such as the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, and by sensationalized fiction and film, such as the Jaws series. Many shark experts feel that the danger presented by sharks has been exaggerated, and even the creator of the Jaws phenomenon, the late Peter Benchley, attempted to dispel the myth of sharks being man-eating monsters in recent years. Statistics In 2000, there were 79 shark attacks reported worldwide, 11 of them fatal. In 2005 and 2006 this number dropped to 61 and 62 respectively, while the number of fatalities dropped to only four per year. Of these attacks, the majority occurred in the United States (53 in 2000, 40 in 2005 and 38 in 2006). [1] For the same period, the Global Shark Attack File records 69 unprovoked attacks of which five were fatal.[2] The Florida Museum of Natural History points out that these numbers should be compared with the much higher deaths from other, less feared causes; for example, several hundred people die annually from lightning strikes.[3] [edit]Species involved in incidents Contrary to popular belief, only a few sharks are dangerous to humans. Out of more than 360 species, only four have been involved in a significant number of fatal unprovoked attacks on humans: the great white, tiger, oceanic whitetip shark[4] and bull sharks.[5] These sharks, being large, powerful predators may sometimes attack and kill people, but all of the above sharks, even the great white, have been filmed in open water, with no cage,[6][7] time and time again without problems. Modern day statistics do not show that the oceanic whitetip shark has often been involved in unprovoked attacks in the past, especially during World War I and World War II. The oceanic whitetip lives in the open sea and rarely shows up near coasts, where nowadays most incidents occur. During the world wars many ships and aircraft disasters have happened in the open ocean. And due to its abundance the oceanic whitetip is often the first species on site when such a disaster happens. Infamous examples of oceanic whitetip attacks include the sinking of the Nova Scotia, a steamship carrying 1000 that was sunk near South Africa by a German submarine in World War II. Only 192 people survived, with many deaths attributed to the oceanic whitetip shark.[8] Another example was the torpedoing of the USS Indianapolis on 30 July 1945, giving a minimal figure of 60--80 killed by oceanic whitetips.[9] Some survivors stated that tiger sharks were involved too. This year, CPSC is warning that a large number of deaths associated with fireworks are related to consumers using professional devices. This year's demonstration will feature a graphic reenactment of an actual incident where a man was killed while setting off professional fireworks. At a news conference to be held on the National Mall, CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord leads a federal push to reduce injuries and deaths associated with all fireworks. CPSC releases new injury and death data, and tips for celebrating safely this holiday. The Falling Man: World Trade Center Horrors Music is Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings, op.11 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Falling_Man The Falling Man is the title of a story about a photograph taken by Richard Drew at 9:41:15 a.m., on September 11, 2001. The story was written by Tom Junod and appeared in the September 2003 issue of Esquire magazine, about the World Trade Center during the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City. The subject of the image was one of the people (dubbed "jumpers" by the press) trapped on the upper floors of the building who apparently chose to jump rather than die from the fire and smoke. According to the documentary by the same title and the article in Esquire, this picture is somewhat deceptive; it gives the impression the man is falling straight down. In reality, this is just one of a dozen photographs of his fall. In the other photos, it is evident that he is tumbling through the air out of control. The photographer has noted that, in at least two cases, newspaper stories commentating on this particular image have attracted a barrage of criticism from readership, who find the image deeply disturbing. Because of the number of jumpers, identifying the man captured in the twelve photos was not an easy task. At least 200 people either jumped or fell to their deaths.[2] Initially, the faller was identified by Globe and Mail reporter Peter Cheney as Norberto Hernandez, but when the family looked at the whole series of pictures (there were approximately a dozen images), it was clear that it was not Hernandez. Three other families claimed that he was their relative, but after careful analysis of the photo this was disproved and the other families backed out. Five years after the attacks, Jonathan Briley, a 43-year-old employee of the Windows on the World was identified by chef Michael Lomonaco as The Falling Man. Briley was a sound engineer who lived outside of Manhattan, in Mount Vernon, and worked in the North Tower restaurant. According to the documentary he was also identified by his brother in the morgue by his orange t-shirt and shoes. Lomonaco claims that he was able to identify Briley by his clothes and body-type. In one of the pictures, The Falling Man's clothes were blown away, revealing an orange undershirt similar to that Briley wore to work almost every day. His sister, Gwendolyn, asserted he was wearing that shirt on the day of the attack. She told reporters of The Sunday Mirror, "When I first looked at the picture... and I saw it was a man - tall, slim - I said, 'If I didn't know any better, that could be Jonathan.'" A charity has been set up for Briley's family, and many news programs have aired his story as being the one of The Falling Man.[citation needed] However, the identity of The Falling Man has never been officially confirmed. 9/11: The Falling Man is a documentary about the picture and the story behind it. It was made by American filmmaker Henry Singer and filmed by Richard Numeroff, a New York-based director of photography. The film is loosely based on Junod's Esquire story. It also drew its material from photographer Lyle Owerko's pictures of falling people. It debuted on March 16, 2006, on the British television channel Channel 4. It later made its North American premiere on Canada's CBC Newsworld on September 6, 2006, and has been broadcast in over 30 countries. Decomposition of Baby Pigs Dr. Jerry Payne's time lapse movie of the decomposition of a baby pig. The technique of time-lapse photography is employed to illustrate the rapid removal of carrion (4 days reduced to approximately 6 minutes). The film demonstrates the sequence of tissue destruction and the role of insects in the ultimate dismemberment of the pig carcass and soil movement. The pink and purple beads were added to show the intense activities of the insects in moving the carcass and soil. Payne writes..."My study was the first "detailed" study of succession in animal decomposition and the first with the pig as the model. The significance of the pig is that it closely approximates the human body (skin, body hair, size etc.) so the data generated could be used in modern forensic science to approximate the time of human deaths. At that time it was simply not possibly (moral/ethical/legal concerns) to perform decompositon studies with human corpses, I know because I tried and was denied. Even so there were many instances where some concerned person buried my research pigs." The pigs used in the experiment were dead when Jerry Payne picked them up from local farmers. Mama pigs (sows) often lay down on their tiny piglets and crush them. This was very common on small farms and led to the invention and deployment of farrowing pens(birthing pens) where the sow is contained and the piglets have a heated space where they are not in danger of being crushed.
