John Doerr: Seeking salvation and profit in greentech http://www.ted.com "I don't think we're going to make it," John Doerr proclaims, in an emotional talk about climate change and investment. Spurred on by his daughter, who demanded he fix the mess the world is heading for, he and his partners at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers embarked on a greentech world tour -- surveying the state of the art, from the ethanol revolution in Brazil to Wal-mart's (!) eco-concept store in Bentonville, Arkansas. KPCB is investing $200 million in green technologies to save the planet and make a profit to boot. But, Doerr fears, it may not be enough. Tags: ted tedtalks venturecapital environment |

John Doerr, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, presents Stanford University with his shortlist of the most disruptive technologies alight at the time of this early 2005 recording. He discusses at length KPCB's decision to fund wireless media, and numerous types of enterprise solutions, including security, search functionality, and some open source and consumer content, among others. Doerr also lectures on how the $18 barrel of oil can be a motivator to energy entrepreneurs, and the then-growing field of personal medicine. Clyde Doerr - (What Do We Do On A) Dew-Dew-Dewey Day Clyde Doerr was one of the most active saxophone players in the 1920's. He began working professionally in a Detroit dance band, then continued his formal studies on violin at King Conservatory in San Jose. By 1919 he blew saxophone in a combo at Techau's Tavern in San Francisco. This was where the superb bandleader Art Hickman heard Doerr one night, leading to an invitation to join Hickman's outfit. The Biltmore Hotel was happy to host this ensemble phenomenon and recording began at Columbia. By the mid-twenties Doerr also formed Clyde Doerr & His Orchestra, recording sides for Victor, Columbia and Edison. This selection, featuring Doerr's own orchestra, is said to be Edison's very last acoustic recording, made on July 1, 1927 in the New York City studio. Roaring Twenties: Clyde Doerr Orchestra , 1920 I Wish I Knew (You Really Loved Me) Clyde Doerr & HO, Victor 1922 -------------------------------------- Clyde DOERR (1894 -1973) - born in Coldwater, Michigan; American saxophonistr and bandleader. He studied violin when he was eight but took up saxophone in a high school, and an alto-saxophonist would bring him fame. Hired by bandleader Art Hickman in 1916, Doerr arrived in New York in 1919 with the Hickman band, hired by Ziegfeld --- and struck out on his own shortly thereafter, forming orchestras that would serve as "house bands" for both New York City's Club Royale and Chicago's Congress Hotel. After establishing a following at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, the band traveled to New York in 1919 and enjoyed great success at the Biltmore Hotel. In addition to appearing on the radio as early as 1925, Doerr and his Orchestra would also tour the country via the vaudeville circuit. His Club Royal Orchestra enjoyed success with its first Vuctor records in 1921. The recording of "The Sheik" (often known as "The Sheik of Araby" - it followed the success of Rudolph Valentino's movie The Sheik) became a gransd success Beginning in late 1922 he led his band in Chicago for two years at the Congress Hotel, and -- after dissolving this band, he returned to New York to work mainly as a session man but he occasionally led groups at record sessions. Clyde Doerr's Saxophone Orchestra made its first side for Columbia in 1925, he continued recording into the late 1920s for Cameo, Lincoln, Romeo, Edison. He left New York City in 1934 to conduct for the National Broadcasting Company in San Francisco but that work ended with a strike. He returned to New York City, worked as a musician, taught music to aspiring saxophonists, and went through four years of chiropractic school, eventually opening a chiropractic Office. In 1943 he returned to Kalifornia and he lived with his sister in San Jose, unable to find housing, and worked for the lock company. eventually becoming chief inspection for precision grinding in an Oakland, doing that work into the 1970s.
