Catálogo virtual de la muestra: http://www.duchampenbsas.com.ar Duchamp en Buenos Aires is the exhibition that will start the "Duchamp year" to commemorate the 90 years of Duchamp´s living period of 9 months in Argentina. This exhibition includes some of the most important personalities of three generations of Argentinian artists, some of them are: (in alphabetic order) Xil Buffone, Eduardo Costa, Marcel Duchamp, Max Gómez Canle, Guillermo Gregorio , Marcelo Gutman, IMADUBA, David Lamelas , Emiliano López, Emiliano Miliyo, Esteban Pastorino , Gastón Pérsico, Provisorio Permanente, Nicolás Radano y Axel Straschnoy. Virtual catalogue of the exhibition: http://www.duchampenbsas.com.ar All the artists created their works specially for this show. With reference to Marcel Duchamp and after a thorough personal research process, a unique document will be presented (for the first time to the press and public). This document has been kept undisclosed in Argentina. It was a gift from Tistán Tzará to a surrealist Argentinian writer, then to a well-known journalist and artist, Hermenegildo Sábat. We are talking about the technical file of the chess match between Marcel Duchamp and the argentinian chess player Valentín Fernández Coria, the 19 th of July of 1924 in Paris. This was the only Oympic International Chess Championship that ever existed. This manuscript, in which are written all the moves that were played in the match, is signed by the artist Marcel Duchamp on the first page and on the opposite side of the document. This material has the signature of the Argentinian player also and will be disclosed along with a certificate that proves its authenticity. The importance of this document lies in Duchamp´s activity during his stay in Buenos Aires: playing chess almost every night. As he said, here is where he became a "chess maniac". In the exhibition catalogue, I describe how Duchamp maintained his contact with Argentina after living in this country, even when he wasn´t living in Buenos Aires any more. Marcel Duchamp Marcel Duchamp(July 28, 1887 -- October 2, 1968) was a French artist (he became an American citizen in 1955) whose work and ideas had considerable influence on the development of post-World War II Western art, and whose advice to modern art collectors helped shape the tastes of the Western art world. While he is most often associated with the Dada and Surrealism movements, his participation in Surrealism was largely behind the scenes, and after being involved in New York Dada, he barely participated in Paris Dada. Thousands of books and articles attempt to interpret Duchamp's artwork and philosophy, but in interviews and his writing, Duchamp only added to the mystery. The interpretations interested him as creations of their own, and as reflections of the interpreter. A playful man, Duchamp prodded thought about artistic processes and art marketing, not so much with words, but with actions such as dubbing a urinal "art" and naming it Fountain. He produced relatively few artworks as he quickly moved through the avant-garde rhythms of his time. Duchamp's early art works align with Post-Impressionist styles. He experimented with classical techniques and subjects, as well as Cubism and Fauvism. When he was later asked about what influenced him at the time, Duchamp cited the work of Symbolist painter Odilon Redon, whose approach to art was not outwardly anti-academic, but quietly individual. He studied art at Académie Julian (1904 to 1905), but preferred playing billiards to attending classes. During this time Duchamp drew and sold cartoons which reflected his ribald humor. Many of the drawings use visual and/or verbal puns. Such play with words and symbols engaged his imagination for the rest of his life. Marcel Duchamp died on October 2, 1968 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France and is buried in the Rouen Cemetery, in Rouen, Normandy, France. His grave bears the epitaph, "D'ailleurs, c'est toujours les autres qui meurent;" or "Besides, it's always other people who die." Tags: Marcel Duchamp dada surrealism |

"Marcel Duchamp vs. Bobby Fisher", Dwarf Gallery www.sequences.is Trong Gia Nguyen (USA) feat. Tómas Lemaquis (IS/FR) Art Exhibition Dwarf Gallery Sequences 2008 Reykjavík, Iceland October 14th Project: Marcel Duchamp Vs. Bobby Fischer Location: Dwarf Gallery Date: October 14, 2008, 19:00 About the project: Trong Gia Nguyens work pits two individuals who will channel the spirits of the two masters, Bobby Fisher and Marcel Duchamp, to play a friendly game of chess. The first two duels took place in New York over the summer, with Duchamp winning one match and the second ending in a draw. The third and final match culminates at Dwarf Gallery on October 14. Chess is the binding medium between Fischer, the former world champion and temperamental exile who passed away earlier this year, and Duchamp, who once played for the French national team. Fischer was an American who became Icelandic out of necessity. Duchamp was a Frenchman who became an American because he could. Fischer hated Bush. Duchamp probably would have hated Bush too. Fischer was a grandmaster and the only American to win the official World Chess Championship in the 20th century, having defeated Boris Spassky in a match held in Reykjavík thirty-three years ago. Duchamp was also a grandmaster of sorts in the Priory of Sion, as Nguyen asserts in his recently completed lost chapter to The Da Vinci Code. Confounding the space-time-art continuum, Marcel Duchamp Versus Bobby Fischer looks at another dimension of perception. Actor / visual artist Tómas Lemarquis will be participating in the performance. Trong Gia Nguyen is a visual artist, curator, writer and art critic. He has produced the art space New General Catalogue in Brooklyn, writes about art for several art magazines, and his works have been presented widely, such as at the Istanbul Biennial, Havana Biennial, Performa05 (The Performance Biennial) in New York, Fruit & Flower Deli Gallery (NY), ISE Foundation (NY), Goff + Rosenthal Gallery in Berlin, Tenri Cultural Institute (NY), Bronx Museum of the Arts (NY), Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn (NY), and Safn a contemporary art museum in Reykjavík. marcel duchamp anemic cinema 1926 This characteristically dada film by Marcel Duchamp consists of a series of visual and verbal puns with nonsense phrases inscribed around rotating spiral patterns, creating an almost hypnotic effect. Silent. Anemic Cinema (various versions were made in 1920, 1923 and, finally, in 1926). Essentially a film by Duchamp with help from Man Ray. Calvin Tomkins: "Duchamp used the initial payment on his inheritance to make a film and to go into the art business. The film, shot in Man Ray's studio with the help of cinematographer Marc Allégret, was a seven-minute animation of nine punning phrases by Rrose Sélavy. These had been pasted, letter by letter, in a spiral pattern on round black discs that were then glued to phonograph records; the slowly revolving texts alternate with shots of Duchamp's Discs Bearing Spirals, ten abstract designs whose turning makes them appear to move backward and forward in an erotic rhythm. The little film, which Duchamp called Anemic Cinema, had its premiere that August at a private screening room in Paris." Tags: duchamp anemic cinema art dada experimental short film |
