Maurice Duruflé 'Ubi Caritas et amor' Quatre Motets sur des Thèmes Grégoriens op. 10 for choir a capella (1960): Ubi Caritas et amor Maurice Duruflé (January 11, 1902 -- June 16, 1986) was a French composer, organist, and pedagogue. Duruflé was born in Louviers, Haute-Normandie. In 1912, he became chorister at the Rouen Cathedral Choir School, where he studied piano and organ with Jules Haelling. At age 17, upon moving to Paris, he took private organ lessons with Charles Tournemire, whom he assisted at Basilique Ste-Clotilde, Paris until 1927. In 1920 Duruflé entered the Conservatoire de Paris, eventually graduating with first prizes in organ, harmony, piano accompaniment, and composition. In 1927, Louis Vierne nominated him as his assistant at Notre-Dame. Duruflé became titular organist of St. Étienne-du-Mont in Paris in 1929, a position he held for the rest of his life. In 1939, he premiered Francis Poulenc's Organ Concerto (the Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani in G minor); he had advised Poulenc on the registrations of the organ part. In 1943 he became professor of harmony at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he worked until 1970. In 1947, Duruflé wrote what is probably the most famous of his few pieces: the Requiem op. 9, for soloists, choir, organ and orchestra. The same year, Marie-Madeleine Chevalier became his assistant at St-Étienne-du-Mont. They married in 1953 (after Duruflé's first marriage to Lucette Bousquet, contracted in 1932, ended in civil divorce in 1947 and was declared null by the Vatican on 23 June 1953) . The couple became a famous and popular organ duo, going on tour together several times throughout the sixties and early seventies. Duruflé suffered severe injuries in a car accident in 1975, and as a result he gave up performing; indeed he was largely confined to his apartment, leaving the service at St-Étienne-du-Mont to his wife Marie-Madeleine (who was also injured in the accident). He died in Louveciennes (near Paris) in 1986, aged 84. As a composer, Duruflé was extremely self-critical. He only published a handful of works and often continued to edit and change pieces after publication. For instance, the Toccata from Suite, op. 5 has a completely different ending in the first edition than in the more recent version, and the score to the Fugue sur le nom d'Alain originally indicated accelerando throughout. The result of this perfectionism is that his music, especially his organ music, holds a very high position in the repertoire. Tags: classical choir Maurice Duruflé Ubi Caritas et amor |

Duruflé Plays Tournemire @ St. Etienne du Mont Paris (1) Well, I've uploaded performances @ St. Stephan's in Vienna & St. Stephan's in Passau. Here's St. Stephan's in Paris -- better known as St. Etienne du Mont. Maurice Duruflé, who was titulaire here for many years, performs (in the mid-1960's, I think) his own 1958 transcription of a piece recorded by Tournemire in 1932. There has been an organ in this church since 1636, but it has obviously gone through several transformations since then. Cavaillé-Coll did 2 of them, & there were 3 others in the 20th century. Currently, it's an impressive IV/89/107. Tags: pipe organ orgue orgel organo Duruflé Tournemire Cantilene "St. Etienne du Mont" Paris classical |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé (1) Recorded by Philippe Lefebvre (the titulaire @ Chartres at the time) in 1981. Since 1985, he's been one of the 3 organists @ Notre Dame of Paris. Maurice Duruflé was not very prolific, but every piece he published was an exquisitely polished gem. The Suite has 3 parts -- uploaded separately. Chartres cathedral is one of the great (& most intensively studied) buildings in the world. There's been an organ there since 1349, but this instrument dates back only to 1971 -- a IV/67/98 Danion-Gonzalez. Everything prior to that (except for the case) was ripped out. Many thanks to Martin Doering of Die Orgelseite for some of his superb pictures. If you haven't found his organ web site yet, run, don't walk. It's www.die-orgelseite.de -- the best organ-related web site in the world, bar none. He's got a ton of information on the great organs of the world, but even better, he's travelled to a lot of them & taken some of the most spectacular organ pix I've ever seen anywhere. It's a bit German-centric, but that's understandable: Martin lives there. I wish we had someone here in the U.S. who had his interest & commitment. Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé "Veni Creator" Maurice Duruflé's "Prelude, Adagio & Choral Varié" on the Latin hymn tune "Veni Creator" is 18+ minutes of musical magic. It's also too long for YouTube. So I've broken it down into its 3 components. Here's the Prélude. Philippe Lefebvre performs in a 1981 recording. I previously (wrongly) attributed this to Tournemire. Sorry for the screw-up. Tags: orgue pipe organ orgel organo Chartres Cathedral Duruflé |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé (3) Recorded in 1981 by Philippe Lefebvre, now one of the 3 titulaires @ Notre Dame of Paris. This Toccata from Maurice Duruflé's Suite, Opus 5, is fiendishly difficult to play (obviously). And if it's not played crisply & precisely, with great attention to tempo & registration, it can turn into a mish-mash very quickly. Lefebvre nails it. The instrument, installed in 1971 (after numerous semi-successful efforts to renovate an organ built initially in 1349 (that's right, 1349 -- FIVE HUNDRED YEARS, for instance, before gold was discovered in California) is a IV/67/98 Danion-Gonzalez. Once more, thanks to Die Orgelseite & Martin Doering for his miraculous pix. And for a vertigo-inducing panoramic shot of the cathedral, go here: http://www.panoramas.dk/da-vinci-code/saint-sulpice2.html And then click on FRANCE in the black strip at the lower edge of the page.
