Dyson DC24 All Floors video + review My new Dyson DC24 All Floors - bought 07 April '08. It really is tiny! Obviously, it's for flats and apartments, not big houses. 650w motor, 100 air-watts of suction. It's only 5.4kg, so a competitor for Oreck - and having used both, I'd rather have this than a useless Oreck any day! The new DC24/25 'ball' system is much better than the first version, as seen on the DC15. The new version is simpler; it feels more solid and less likely to break. The functionality of this machine really is a great feat of design engineering. On the downside, calling the tools - or tool, more accurately - 'basic' is an understatement, and the 'ball' stops it going under quite a lot of furniture. In the TV 'Ball' ad campaign, Mr. Dyson sniffs 'It's amazing we've put up with [4-wheel cleaners] for so long!' - but at least we could get them under the coffee table! In this respect, the 'ball' design fails absolutely, and the silly tool we're offered with this machine make doing it by hand out of the question. The fact that the exhaust air exits from the ball itself means on hard floors, light suface litter like pet hair etc. is blown everywhere, which is a bad failing for a so-called 'All Floors' machine. The on/off and brush-roll switches are very poor, and it can take several attempts to switch the machine on or off. The Dyson engineer sprayed them with liquid silicon and pronounced them 'fixed', but there's no improvement at all. You can't just press it without thinking, you have to make a precise, forceful jab, which can get annoying if you're cleaning for any length of time. After just 1 month of owning this cleaner, it started making a squealing noise for the first 30 seconds after it was switched on. I called the helpline and they sent an engineer out the next day to fix it. He couldn't work out what the problem was, and took it away. He took it on a Thursday and it was meant to be back with me by the following Tuesday. It actually took over two weeks for it to be returned, and I had to call twice to find out what the hell was going on! It turned out the noise was part of the filter seal vibrating in the airflow (surely this implies a leak!?), but he'd put in a new motor anyway (or so he claims; I can't really check, can I? I'd void the guarantee for a start!) It was all done under guarantee free of charge, but I wasn't impressed how long it took to get the cleaner back. It also came back with the head scuffed and scraped in several places, from where he'd tested it out. Oh, and it's still making the noise. Grr... Dyson DC21 Paper Test In response to the ill-fated Dyson DC15 paper test video where the machine couldn't pick up a piece of paper and hold it to the nozzle, I decided to try the same with my DC21 Stowaway. However, I added a little twist to it. First, you will see the machine picking up the paper with an empty bin. Then, I vacuumed up a mixture of rice and Borax applied to the rug to show the pickup capability of the machine. Afterwards, I zoom in on the contents of the bin (showing all of the fine dust), then attempt to pick up the same piece of paper. Watch and see :) By the way, this is one of the first US DC21s, I bought it right when it came out last March from a fellow collector (and Dyson dealer) who received the first US shipment of DC21s. The serial number on mine is 38!
