Lying Evangelist Exposed! Hugh Marjoe Ross Gortner, generally known as Marjoe Gortner (born January 14, 1944 in Long Beach, California), is a former evangelical minister who first gained a certain fame in the late 1940s and early to mid 1950s when he became the youngest ordained preacher at the age of four, and then outright notoriety in the 1970s when he starred in an Oscar-winning, behind-the-scenes documentary about the lucrative business of Pentecostal preaching. The name "Marjoe" is a combination of the names "Mary" and "Joseph". When Marjoe was three, his father, a second generation evangelical minister, noticed his son's talent for mimicry and overall fearlessness of strangers and public settings. His parents claimed Marjoe had received a vision from God during a bath and began training him to deliver sermons, complete with dramatic gestures and emphatic lunges. By the time Marjoe was four, his parents arranged for him to perform a marriage ceremony for a film crew from Paramount studios, referring to him as "the youngest ordained minister in history." Like much in Marjoe's early life it is hard to say for sure who exactly ordained him, if his father ordained him, or if he was even ordained at all. Until the time he was a teenager, Marjoe and his parents traveled the rural United States, holding revival meetings. As well as teaching him scriptural passages, Marjoe's parents also taught him several money-making tactics, involving the sale of supposedly "holy" articles at revivals which promised to heal the sick and dying. By the time Marjoe was sixteen, he later estimated, his family had amassed maybe three million dollars; shortly after his sixteenth birthday, Marjoe's father absconded with the money, and a disillusioned Marjoe left his mother for San Francisco, where he was taken in by and became the lover of an older woman. Marjoe spent the remainder of his teenage years as an itinerant hippie until his early twenties, when, hard pressed for money, he decided to put his old skills to work and re-emerged on the evangelical circuit with a charismatic stage-show modeled after those of contemporary rockers, most notably Mick Jagger. Marjoe made enough to take six months off every year, during which he returned to California, surviving on the previous six months' earnings. In the late 1960s, Marjoe suffered a crisis of conscience -- in particular about the threats of damnation he felt compelled to weave into his sermons -- and resolved to make one final tour, this time on film. Under the pretense of making a documentary on the evangelical and non-denominational faiths, Marjoe assembled a documentary film crew to follow him around the Southern United States during 1971; unbeknownst to everyone else involved -- including, at one point, his father -- Marjoe gave "backstage" interviews to the filmmakers in between sermons and revivals, explaining intimate details of how he and other ministers operated. After sermons, the filmmakers were invited back to Marjoe's hotel room to tape him counting the money he collected during the day. The resulting film, Marjoe, won the 1972 Academy Award for best documentary. After leaving the revival circuit, Gortner then attempted to break into both Hollywood and the recording industry. He cut an LP with Columbia Records, entitled "Bad, but not Evil" (Gortner's description of himself in the documentary), which met with poor sales and reviews. Gortner began his acting career with a featured role in The Marcus-Nelson Murders, the 1973 pilot for the Kojak tv-series. The following year saw him featured in the disaster film Earthquake as a psychotic National Guardsman, and in the television movie Pray for the Wildcats. During the late 1970s, Marjoe attempted to self-finance another film, this time a pseudo-fictional drama about an evangelist con-man and based in part on his real-life experiences. The film started shooting in New Orleans, Louisiana, but went bankrupt less than 6-weeks into production. The film was never completed. Gortner was married briefly to Candy Clark, from 1978-1979. Gortner's most memorable film performance was as the psychopathic, hostage-taking drug dealer in Milton Katselas's 1979 screen adaptation of Mark Medoff's play When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder?, also starring Peter Firth, Lee Grant, and Hal Linden. Gortner reappeared a few years later, starring in several B-movies such as Starcrash and hosting an early-1980s reality TV series called Speak Up America before ending his movie career in 1995. Today he sponsors charity golf tournaments and other events. His most recent film appearance was in the 1995 feature Wild Bill, where he played, appropriately enough, a preacher. Evangelist to Senate: My financial records belong to God They preach the "Prosperity Doctrine" - that God can make you healthy and wealthy - and they live what they preach. Every year America's best known TV evangelists bring in hundreds of millions of dollars from donors all over the world. But as BBC's Jonathan Beale reports, some of the evangelists' own lifestyles have begun to ring alarm bells and have prompted a Senate investigation into their activities. Last fall, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, began probing the finances of six TV evangelists whose lifestyles include mansions, Rolls-Royces, and private jets, all paid for out of church funds. Grassley told BBC, "I would not contribute to an organization that is Christian and evangelical with money being wasted that way." Four of the ministers have since complied with the probe, but Rev. Kenneth Copeland, whose congregation recently bought him a $20 million private jet to preach the gospel, is holding out against the inquiry, which he claims is "aimed at publicly questioning the religious beliefs of the targeted churches." "It's not yours, it's God's, and you're not going to get it," Copeland says of his financial records. He has launched a website to publicize his crusade and has received support from several leading conservatives, including Paul Weyrich and Kenneth Blackwell. This video is from BBC, broadcast July 2, 2008. http://rawstory.com/rawreplay/?p=1401 Tags: Evangelist to Senate: My financial records belong God |

I read this scripture and realized that so many folk are living beneath their means due to a lifestlye of SIN!!! Some folk are living accursed lives due to their failure to obey the WORD of GOD! The Bible says, "I wish that you would PROSPER and be in good health even as your SOUL PROSPER!" But many people will never experience this PROSPEROUS life because of the sin in their lives! That's why we are a sick/diseased impoverished nation of people! 2 Chronicles 7:14 - "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." Evangelist,Juanita Bynum's Husband Turns Himself Into Police Juanita Bynum is one of the most prominent female preachers in America. Her husband, Thomas W. Weeks III, founded a series of churches called Global Destiny. The two married in 2002 in a televised ceremony; her ring famously sported a 7.76-carat diamond. But the couple has apparently been in for a rough patch lately, and they met at an Atlanta hotel to try to reconcile. It apparently didn't go well. At 4 a.m., the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, a physical fight broke out and a bellman had to pull Weeks off of Bynum. "She was bruised up and battered," a police officer told the paper. "She had purple bruising around her neck and upper torso." No charges have been filed against Weeks, the paper reports. Bynum, was released on bond Friday after surrendering on charges that he assaulted his wife. Weeks spent about six hours inside the Fulton County Jail before emerging at 1:40 p.m., holding a finger to his lips to signal that he had no comment. He climbed into the passenger seat of a silver, four-door Jaguar and rode away. Weeks's books include "What's on Your Mind: The Level of Your Success Begins with Your Thinking" and "Even As Your Soul Prospers: Realize Your Purpose, Release Your Blessings." Then, there was this book, "Teach Me How to Love You: The Beginnings." In a brief hearing at the jail, bond was set at $30,000 on a charge of aggravated assault and $10,000 on a charge of terroristic threats, and a magistrate ordered Weeks to have no contact with Bynum or her sister, Tina Culpepper. Weeks, dressed in a gray suit and bow tie, sat silently in the small jail courtroom, his cuffed hands in his lap. Juanita Bynum, a televangelist with a national following for sermons about women's empowerment, pressed charges against her estranged husband Thursday after she was bruised in a confrontation with him during a meeting to reconcile, police said. Preacher Thomas W. Weeks III, founder of Global Destiny churches, will be charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threats, Officer Ronald Campbell said. The struggle happened early Wednesday in the parking lot of the Renaissance Concourse Hotel near Atlanta's airport, Campbell said. "They were talking about a reconciliation. They got into an argument. In the process of the argument, her husband walked out to the parking lot area, turned back around and started to choke Miss Bynum," Campbell said. "As he choked her, he pushed her down to the ground and started to kick her and also stomp on her," he said. "There was a bellman at the location who witnessed the whole assault, intervened, and pulled Mr. Weeks off of Miss Bynum." Amy Malone, a publicist for Bynum, said, "She was not in a fight with her husband; she was attacked by her husband." "Basically she is recovering," Malone said. "The appropriate steps have been taken to ensure that this does not happen again. She just asks that everyone respect her privacy." Weeks did not return a phone message or an e-mail request for comment by The Associated Press. A call to Global Destiny was answered by a recorded message offering only information about the ministry. Bynum is a former homemaker, hairdresser and flight attendant who became a Pentecostal evangelist. She got a break when Bishop T.D. Jakes invited her to speak at one of his conferences several years ago. Her ministry blossomed after her "No More Sheets" sermon about breaking free of sexual promiscuity at a singles event. She writes books, records inspirational CDs and preaches to millions through televised sermons. She married Weeks in 2002 in a televised wedding. "A WORD for the CHURCH" -by S. Jha (Mar 22, 06). Many fraudsters and scamsters have entered the Body of Christ. America is under confusion. Until the fraudsters and scamsters are dealt with by the law and the Body of Believers, there will be no respite. Americans are waiting for God to do it; God is waiting for the church to judge its own. Here is a classic spiritual impasse. Anil Dash, Blog Evangelist - The Simple Secrets of Vlogging Earlier this month, I sat down with Anil Dash, the chief evangelist for Six Apart, the world's biggest blog software company. They develop and run TypePad (Beet's platform), Movable Type, Vox and LiveJournal. Anil is one of the top thought leaders in the field. He explains the simplicity and value of posting videos to a blog platform. He references a tool from VideoEgg which allows registered users to upload to VideoEgg and post directly to a TypePad account. (Google Video now allows you to upload directly to TypePad and Live Journal.) You can also upload video directly simply by "scraping" the embed code of publicly available videos and pasting that code into your blog post using the "html" edit function. All that is easy; the important part is getting good footage, but also employing the tools of effective blogging: compelling perspective, new information and links back to other sources. As Anil explains, all this data becomes searchable and makes your video discoverable. Tags: Anil Dash Evangelist Six Apart Online Video Beet.TV Blogging |
