Extinct rhino in borneo caught on tape http://www.theliberalblogger.com/forum A Sumatran rhinoceros is captured on a remote video camera set up in the jungles of Malaysian Borneo. One of the world's rarest species, the Borneo rhino, has been caught on video for the first time in a project that could help save it from extinction, it was announced today. Conservationists fear there could be as few as 25 rhinos of this shy species left in the jungles of Borneo. They are concerned that the remaining animals are so isolated that they do not meet each other enough to breed. Article continues The elusive nature of the species was immortalised by Redmond O'Hanlon in his bestselling book Into the Heart of Borneo, based on his account of trying to track down a rhino on the island. They are so secretive that the first still photograph of a Borneo rhino was taken last year. Now, thanks to a new video camera trap developed by the WWF, moving pictures of a Borneo rhino have been recorded. The film shows a rhino emerging from the undergrowth to noisily sniff the camera equipment. Raymond Alfred, project manager for the WWF Asian Rhino and Elephant Action Strategy, said filming the species would help to conserve it by giving experts a greater understanding of its behaviour and physical health. "The footage will be used to determine the condition of the rhinos in the wild," he said. "But we have to realise that these rhinos could face extinction in the next 10 years if their habitat continues to be disturbed and enforcement is not in place." One of the biggest threats to the species is poaching. Its horn is said to be worth as much as gold on the black market. It is also threatened by the destruction of its forest habitat for agriculture and development. The Borneo rhino is a subspecies of the Sumatran rhino, which is also extremely rare. The WWF estimates there are fewer that 300 Sumatran rhinos worldwide. Tags: extinct rhino borneo discovered caught tape |

Carribean Monk Seals are Extinct Carribean Monk Seals are Extinct http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080607/ap_on_sc/monk_seal_extinction;_ylt=AkIw3FZpLGUHWefUzcCoNuKs0NUE MY VERSION: Carribean Monk Seals are Extinct HONOLULU -- Fascist officials have confirmed what biologists have long thought: The Caribbean monk seal has gone the way of the dodo, the passenger pigeon, the tarpan, the Falkland Island fox, the Western black rhinoceros -- murdered by human civilization. Civilized humans raping the docile creatures for research, food and blubber left the population unsustainable, say biologists who warn that Hawaiian and Mediterranean monk seals could be the next to go. The last confirmed sighting of a Caribbean monk seal was in 1952 between Jamaica and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The National Fascist Oceanic Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service confirmed Friday that the species has been fully stamped out. Kyle Baker, a biologist for NFOAA's Fisheries Service southeast region, lied and said the species is the only seal to become extinct from civilization. The seals were first classified as endangered in 1967, and wildlife experts investigated several reported sightings over the past few decades. But officials determined they were other seal types. The federal agency says there are fewer than 1,200 Hawaiian and 500 Mediterranean monk seals remaining, and their populations are declining. "We hope we've learned from the extinction of Caribbean monk seals, and can provide stronger protection for their Hawaiian and Mediterranean relatives," Baker said. What might make more sense is to stop treating the community of life as a tissue into which to shoot our ejaculate. The Hawaiian monk seal population, protected by NFOAA, is declining at a rate of about 4 percent annually, according to NFOAA. The agency predicts the population could fall below 1,000 in the next three to four years, placing the mammal among the world's most endangered marine species. "When populations get very small, they become very unstable," Baker said. "They become more vulnerable to threats like disease and predation by sharks." This dumbass fails to mention that human civilization is the only cause for the monk seal's exctinction. Vicki Cornish, a wildlife expert at the Ocean Conservancy, said the fate of the Caribbean monk seal is a "wake-up call" to stop raping the remaining seal populations, and the rest of the world. "We must act now to reduce threats to existing monk seal populations, like human civilization, before it's too late," she said. "These animals are important to the balance and health of the ocean, and all animals are important to the balance and health of the planet. We can't afford to wait." Monk seals are particularly sensitive to disturbance by human civilization. And the sea creatures have been losing their food supply and beaches, officials say, also thanks to human civilization. "Once Hawaii, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean were teeming with fish, but these are areas under severe fishing pressure and rape from human civilization," Cornish said. "They'll eat almost anything — shellfish or finned fish — but their food supply is waning because it's being stolen by civilized man." The Caribbean monk seal, first discovered during Christopher Columbus' second voyage in 1494, once had a population of more than 250,000. But they became easy game for hunters because they often rested, gave birth or nursed their pups on beaches. From the 1700s to 1900s, the seals were killed mainly for their blubber, which was processed into oils, used for lubrication and coating the bottom of boats. Their skins were used for trunk linings, clothing, straps and bags. The endangered Hawaiian monk seals face different types of challenges, including entanglement in marine debris, climate change and coastal development, which all stem from the devastating danger of human civilization. About 80 to 100 live in the main Hawaiian Islands and 1,100 in the largely uninhabited Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, a marine national monument. Biologist Bud Antonelis said NFOAA's Fisheries Service has developed a monk seal recovery plan for the Hawaiian monk seals. "But we need continued support from organizations and the public if we are to have a chance at saving it, and ourselves, from extinction," he said. "Time is running out." As for the Caribbean monk seal, another victim of human civilization, NFOAA said it is working to have them removed from the endangered species list. Species are removed from the list when their populations are no longer threatened or endangered, or when they are declared extinct. Tags: Carribean Monk Seals are Extinct |

Hammerhead Salamander "Diplocaulus" EXTINCT Unknown hammerhead salamanders are reported in cryptozoology from time to time. In 1992, a Japanese artist made a small diplocaulus model which he photographed in a pan on a lawn. The photo looked quite realistic and was circulated in 2004 and 2005 on forums where many thought it was a real salamander. Diplocaulus lived from the late Carboniferous to the late Permian period (roughly 270 million years ago) I had seen the picture of it in the pan with water in a few diffrent videos and so I did some research and found out it was a fake picture and had been extinct for a long time. There are no other videos on youtube that explain this and that is why I made this video. The hammerhead salamander "Diplocaulus" is in fact extinct. [Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia] "Diplocaulus in popular culture" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplocaulus Info on a study done in 1980. http://www.jstor.org/pss/35462 When you get there it says "You are not currently authorized to access this article." Dont worry about that I accessed it just fine. Two major subclasses of extinct amphibians are found in the fossil record. They are the Labyrinthodontia and the Lepospondyli. The amphibians of the Labyrinthodontia, which lived during the late Devonian through Triassic periods (345 to 190 million years ago), include the most primitive amphibians represented by the genus Ichthyostega. They were fresh-water carnivorous animals, with tail fins, small scales, and a fishlike vertebral column. Their skulls had many bones, as did those of their presumed crossopterygian ancestor. The Labyrinthodontia, according to the U.S. paleontologist Alfred S. Romer, include three extinct orders: the Ichthyostegalia, the Temnospondyli, and the Anthracosauria. The Anthracosauria are thought to be the ancestors of reptiles and hence of modern birds and mammals. The Temnospondyli are thought by some scientists to be the ancestors of the modern frogs. The amphibians of the subclass Lepospondyli, which lived during the Mississippian through lower Permian periods (340 to 270 million years ago), include the extinct orders Nectridea, Aistopoda, and Microsauria. Members of the latter two orders were elongate. Some had limbs, some had reduced limbs, and some had no limbs. Many scientists suggest that the ancestors of modern salamanders and caecilians are among the lepospondyl. (Lepospondyli Classification) All Lepospondyls are most notably characterised by having simple, spool-shaped vertebra, which were not preformed as cartilage but rather grew as bony cylinders around the notochord. Usually also the upper portion of the vertebra, the neural arch, is fused to the centra (the main body of the vertebra) (Colbert 1969). No clear common ancestors are known, since each of the known clades are already highly specialised when they first appear in the fossil record. It is not known whether the Lepospondyls are an artificial (polyphyletic) group which independently evolved similar characteristics of the vertebra, or whether they descended from a single common ancestor. At one time it was thought that some Lepospondyls are related or perhaps ancestral to modern Urodela, although this view is no longer held. For a long time they were considered one of the three subclasses of amphibians (Romer 1966, Colbert 1969, Carroll 1988) More recently it has been suggested that the Lepospondyls may be related or ancestral to modern amphibians as well as to amniotes (reptiles etc) (Laurin 1996) , that they are an artificial grouping with some members related to both extinct and living amphibians (Batrachomorpha) but not amniotes (Benton 2000), or alternatively are a monophyletic group closely related to the ancestry of amniotes but not to recent amphibians (Benton 2004). Apart from the Nectridea, Lepospondyls are limited in distribution to Europe and North America (Carroll 1988). Tags: Hammerhead Salamander Diplocaulus EXTINCT |
