Making Trouble trailer Making Trouble, the new documentary about legendary funny Jewish women who broke barriers and shook the social order to make us laugh, had its world premiere at the 2007 SILVERDOCS/AFI Discovery Channel Documentary Festival. Making Trouble profiles six Jewish women who struggled and sacrificed for their fame, and who turned the old "death is easy, comedy is hard" joke completely on its head. Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner, and Wendy Wasserstein proved that comedy is easy, being a Jewish woman in comedy is hard. Fanny Brice - (Better Copy) When a Woman Loves a Man Fania Borach aka Fanny Brice was born in NYC in 1891 of Hungarian Jewish descent. She was a comedienne, singer, theater and film actress as well as a successful recording artist. She appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies from 1910 until the 1930s and in the 1921 Follies sang "My Man" which became her signature song. She was also the famous Baby Snooks, the bratty kid, a character she created and performed when she was 45. Baby Snooks was one of the top rated radio comedy programs of the late 30s. Here, Fanny sings "When a Woman Loves a Man' from her 1930 film "Be Yourself". She died in Holly wood in 1951. Barbra Striesand starred as Brice in the '64 Broadway "Funny Girl" and in the '68 movie of that same title. Appearing at 2:18 is Marjorie "Babe" Kane, the cousin of the real Betty Boop, Helen Kane. Helen's little Chicago cousin actually was more successful in the movie business appearing in 68 films from 1929-'51. Tags: Fanny Brice Babe Kane When Woman Loves Man Be Yourself 1920s 1930s jazz |
