Rappers in Iran remain unlicensed Wahington,DC (October 1, 2008) Iranian rappers are struggling to bring their underground culture to the surface. However, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has vowed they would never give permission for rap. Rap music in Iran is a steadily-growing phenomenon. Artists music can be found on sites like youtube, but inside Iran, rappers face resistance from government regulations on music. Hossein Taaleh, Toot Farangi rapper: "Once we tried to get a license from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance for our rap tracks and staging concerts but unfortunately, they said they would never give permission for rap. They would only allow a rap which is song within a pop track and it should also be free of feelings exclusive to rap songs. That means reading the lyrics non-rhythmically and fast! It is not rap." Government regulations do not seem to be as effective as officials had hoped. Underground culture thrives among the youth, which make up about 70% of the population. Such culture manifests visually in graffiti art, which can depict American rap stars, role models for Iranian rappers. Amir Tafreshi, owner of studio: "Getting permission for rap in Iran faces difficulties for reasons such as personality and appearance of rappers, the style of their songs. However, I have never seen any crack-down on any rapper. They easily come to studios and record their songs. There are lots of studios around Tehran." Their songs can speak to social ills not addressed by the government. These issues can range form censorship, unemployment, and even suicide. Hossein Taaleh, Toot Farangi rapper: "The name of the song we were just recoding is Suicide. It is meant to be educational because the rate of suicide has gone up by 35 percent in the country. That is because of the wrong mentality of people toward suicide. We are trying to correct this mentality. (to Ramin) Could you explain more about the track?" Ramin Bateni, Toot Farangi: "In this track, I speak as the devil and encourage people to commit suicide. Hossein is an angel and tries to discourage them." Making the music is one story, but distribution can be difficult. Artists now rely no less conventional methods. Hossein Taaleh, Toot Farangi rapper: "This track will soon be circulated in 5-6 websites that present rap songs. We are planning to make a video for this song too. Everyone can easily download it on the internet." With ever more censorship comes ever more circumnavigation. For now, Irans underground rap culture can thrive only online.
