Does and Fawns, Shenandoah National Park I took these pictures with my Canon EOS 40D SLR using the Canon L-series 70-200mm F2.8 and 100-400mm IS lenses on 20 and 21 June 2008. The deer and the fawns were very good subjects in that they were in an open meadow and were not really afraid of man (since they were in a no-hunting zone). It was a lot of fun. Buck and Fawns Socializing Last Friday, I saw an unusual sight: A buck, a doe and fawns all lying together in the grass behind my house. I'd never seen a male deer having anything to do with babies before. By the time I got the camera out, the doe had stood up, but one of the fawns was still hanging around the buck. A short while later as I went out my front door, I heard the unmistakable squeak of a fawn, and looked over a rise into the neighbor's back yard to see the whole group of them drinking from a bird bath -- except for the little fawns who couldn't quite reach. As I finally got on my motorcycle, I saw the buck leaving on his own -- so I guess it was only a temporary bit of socializing on his part. Sadly, sometime last night or early this morning, a fawn died in our front lawn. I don't know if it was one of these particular fawns, of course. I can only surmise that its mother must have gotten hit by a car or somehow had gotten so separated that the little one's squeaks could not be heard. Tags: deer fawn fawns buck doe |

Doe and her twin fawns This doe has been visiting since she and her twin were young fawns - accompanied by their mother. Her twin was hit by a car and killed and her mother was killed during hunting season. She now returns with her fawns - last year with one and this year with twins. I don't know if she survived this hunting season but hope she did. This area is populated with deer hunters but none would knowlingly take these relatively tame deer. Very Rare View-Doe Nurse 2 Fawns, Piebald Deer, Big Bucks Video shows extremely rare view of a doe nursing her two fawns. Although it is difficult to see deer fighting or mating, it is much rarer to view a nursing doe. This is because the does hide their fawns as protection and are very careful about exposing them to predators. The fawns are young and speckled, but large enough to run and jump. The first fawn shown is one of the doe's fawns. The doe very carefully enters the woods, where she left the fawns. She looks around and then calls the fawns. While she nurses, she is alert watching in all directions. The fawns wag their tails as they nurse as lambs and other related animals do. Afterwards she hides in the woods. One chief means that deer use to evade predation is that of remaining motionless. This is especially used by fawns. A doe protecting her fawns is said to be more dangerous than even a big buck in rut. Nearby was a rare piebald deer, having speckled ears, and two large bucks, which leapt across a clearing. **Some of the world's largest bucks live in Ohio. Some of its world champion bucks have Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. Ohio's Beatty Buck may be the (or among the) largest ever taken by a hunter. That title of the largest whitetail, ever, in the record books belongs to the "Missouri Monarch," a 333-7/8 buck found dead on the side of a road in 1982 near St. Louis. In second place is the legendary "Hole in the Horn," found dead in Ohio in 1940, however, many whitetail experts think that it is actually the largest set of whitetail deer antlers in history. It may be the most famous whitetail known. The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh up to around 400 pounds and the female up to 175 pounds. Males of one year or older have antlers. Young bucks with very small antlers are called button bucks. When the antlers begin to grow in the late spring, they are covered with a very vascular tissue known as velvet or moss. This drops off later. The Boone & Crockett scoring system is used to rate antlers or racks. Bucks shed their antlers at the end of breeding season (rut). Some female deer also have antlers. The piebald or white deer, a deer having more white than normal but not an albino, is very rare Deer have an amazing assortment of communicative signs. Approximately 100 different vocalizations have been recorded, such as tending grunts, dominant grunts, bleats, and many others. They make extensive use of sign language. The whitetail is found throughout most of the U.S., southern Canada, Central America, and in the northern portions of South America. It is a generalist, which can adapt to a wide variety of habitats, including woodland, open savanna, and even sage areas.
