De Vlaamse Leeuw - Flemish Anthem De Vlaamse Leeuw (English: The Flemish Lion) is the official anthem of Flanders, the most populated Region and thus largest Community in the federal kingdom of Belgium. The words of this anthem were written in July 1847 by Hippoliet Van Peene (1811—1864) who was clearly inspired by the song Sie sollen ihn nicht haben, / den freien Deutschen Rhein, / So lang sich Herzen laben / An seinem Feuerwein (They must never get our free German Rhine, As long as hearts relish its fiery wine) by the German author Nikolaus Beckers. The music, by Karel Miry (1823—1899), is apparently influenced by Robert Schumann's Sonntags am Rhein. De Vlaamse Leeuw is a strijdlied, a nationalist 'battle-song', like France's Marseillaise. Franco-Belgian political tension in the mid-19th century made the Flemish public mood ripe for such an expression of regional feeling. At the time it was not meant as anti-Belgian (as it often came to be seen by Flemish separatists and their Belgicist opponents), for the 'enemy' it refers to is Belgium's southwestern neighbour France, as in the 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs. Around 1900 the anthem was in general use among Flemish militants. On 6 July 1973, a decree by the then Raad voor de Nederlandse Cultuurgemeenschap (the precursor of the present Flemish regional Parliament) proclaimed the first two stanzas to be the official 'national' anthem of Flanders. Flemish Politicians Boycott Olympic Opening Ceremony CHEN: Yesterday the Flemish Parliament in Belgium held a hearing on the human rights situation in China surrounding the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. With several world leaders not attending the opening ceremony and an increasing discussion on whether the games themselves should be boycotted, now the Flemish parliament is expressing it's concern about the human rights violations taking place in China. STORY: The hearing was organized by the Flemish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Flemish Green Party and Flemish Interest Party have each proposed a resolution condemning the human rights violations by the Chinese regime. The hearing will play a key role in the voting process for the resolution, which includes a boycott of the Games. Minister of Sport Bert Anciaux said in his speech that no Belgium politician would attend the opening ceremony. [Bert Anciaux, Flemish Minister of Sport and Culture]: "The Olympic Games are of course very important manifestations. It's a moment where we can try to change a little bit the Chinese reality, and have more attention by the Chinese government for the civil right and for the situation in Tibet." Representatives of the Belgium Falun Gong Association, Belgium Friends of Tibet and the Belgium Olympic Committee were invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to share their insight on the current situation in China. [Nicolas Schols, Belgium Falun Dafa Association]: "This large scale massive arrest of Falun Gong practitioners, the organ harvesting, the fact that Falun Gong practitioners are massively arrest in the last several months, now that the Olympic Games are about to start." [Inge Hermans, Belgium Friends of Tibet]: "We have to inform people, we have to say what's going on there. We don't have all the information we want to have, we will work further. And then of course we now ask the Flemish Government and Flemish parliament to take some actions, like what? For example, we have to inform our athletes where they are going, what they will find there, what will be the situation." A representative of the Belgium Olympic Committee stressed the IOC's standpoint that the Olympics would help improve human rights in China, but many parliament members were not satisfied. Flemish Folk-Songs at the North Sea sung by dominique dv It was in last August, Sunday 3th (and not on the 4th like written on the video), we went to the North Sea for only 1 € per person on the railway. Some summer days the regional railway company has its days of goodness. There were much wind as you can see. So that we can hear it on the video, you shall get also the sound of the waves and my voice singing these folk-songs of french flemish country which Edmond de Coessemaker was written down from the popular mouthly tradition in the middle of the 19th century. He put them in a book named "Chants populaires des flamands de France". I cannot all the words by heart, so that I'm sometimes singing only the tune, all a capella. You can hear : "Wel Island geen bedroefde kust", a song about the women waiting on their husband gone to the Island fishing, a shepherd song about Cecilia and Florian, "Ik zaa Cecilia komen", a song which sounds a little like "The Moldau" of Smetana, some joke songs like "Jan, mijnen man" and "Jan de mulder" and "Een kalamenden ook", the bell song of Dunkerque, the town from which you see the beach of Malo-les-Bains at the high tide, and the fotos of sea-birds I made just before. Dunkerque is the most Northern town of France, at 51° North, and means Duinkerke which means Church of the Dunes. These songs are also popular in North of Belgium where they have the same tradition.
