Servando & Florentino: "Alíviame" Brothers Servando and Florentino Primera, a popular Venezuelan pop duo billed as Servando y Florentino, experienced remarkable success at a young age, first as adolescent singers in La Orquesta Salserín and subsequently as a teenage salsa-pop act overseen for a while by Ricardo Montaner. After fading away suddenly as the 1990s came to a close and Montaner withdrew his support, the brothers staged a well-received comeback in 2006 with a self-titled album that signaled their maturity as well as a refreshing approach to music-making. Born in Baruta, which is part of the greater metropolitan area of Caracas, Servando (August 27, 1980) and Florentino (August 31, 1981) are offspring of Alí Primera, a well-regarded musician, poet, composer, and political activist who died in a tragic automobile accident in February 1985. The brothers began their recording careers in the mid-'90s as part of La Orquesta Salserín, a salsa-pop orchestra of kids under the guidance of Manuel Guerra. La Orquesta Salserín debuted in 1993 with La Orquesta Infantil del Mundo, released by Columbia Records, and returned three years later with Con Mucho Swing (1996). Driven by the hit single "De Sol a Sol," which benefited from its association with a telenovela of the same name, Con Mucho Swing became an international success for La Orquesta Salserín. In turn, the brothers broke away from the band and formed a salsa-pop act of their own, Servando y Florentino. Latin pop superstar Ricardo Montaner executive produced their debut album, Los Primera (1998), and wrote many of the songs, including the hit singles "Un Fan Enamorada" and "Aliviame," the former a chart-topper featured on the telenovela Todo por Tu Amor (1996). Sergio George also had a hand in Los Primera, co-writing a couple songs with Servando, including "Los Hermanos Primera." Following this breakthrough success, Servando y Florentino capitalized on their star power with a film, Muchacho Solitario (1999), which was accompanied by a soundtrack. Once again, Montaner penned the key hits, "Muchacho Solitario" and "Te Regalo la Luna," but didn't contribute anything to the brothers' next album, Paso a Paso (2000). Instead, Yasmil Marrufo co-wrote the songs with Servando; however, the album didn't perform well in the marketplace and consequently led to the termination of Servando y Florentino's relationship with WEA Latina, which was finalized with the release of Grandes Exitos (2001). A half-decade later, the brothers made a surprising comeback with Servando y Florentino (2006), released by Universal Music Latino in partnership with Venevision. Again written primarily by Marrufo and Servando, with both performing much of the music as well, Servando y Florentino exhibited a more mature and contemporary style. Impressively, the album spawned a few hits, most notably "Una Cancion Que Te Enamore," and earned the brothers a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocals. La confrontación entre Florentino, el más famoso de los cantadores llaneros y El Diablo se desarrolla en varias escenas. La primera corresponde al Reto, en ella El Diablo se cruza con Florentino, caballeros ambos, en algún paraje desolado del verano llanero, y lo desafía a un contrapunteo, en lugar y oportunidad allí señalados. La segunda escena nos representa a Florentino cantando en el sitio convenido, a la espera del retador, quien no tarda en presentarse, iniciándose de inmediato el contrapunteo tramado con bandola o arpa, cuatro y maracas, al final del cual, El Diablo derrotado, algunos dicen que por la salida del sol y otros por el conjuro de los santos, desaparece. La leyenda que recorre los llanos sugiere que luego del encuentro Florentino nunca más volvió a cantar. Esta obra es de talla universal. Trata de un tema ancestral: la lucha entre el bien y el mal. Recoge el tema ya planteado en la Biblia, la batalla entre el Angel de la Muerte y Jacobo, llamado por ello Israél, batalla que se define al llegar el alba, de la misma manera que la batalla entre Florentino y el Diablo se define cuando la mañana hace su aparición sobre la llanura. Este poema grande, inmenso, sobrecogedor, produjo con el tiempo la que es sin duda la mayor obra musical sinfónica de Venezuela, "La Cantata Criolla" (1954) del gran maestro ANTONIO ESTÉVEZ. Ésta es, sin lugar a dudas, la obra musical venezolana más importante del Siglo XX, una obra que ha sido reconocida como una pieza maestra de la literatura musical universal. "Florentino e o Diabo, e um grande poema mítico cheio de símbolos e variantes. O mesmo está aberto a inúmeras interpretações. Porém acima de tudo, é um poema nosso. Sendo uma obra autentica e totalmente nacional, ela alcança conotações latinoamericanas" A Confrontação entre Florentino, é o mais famoso de suas canções dos llaneros e o Demônio que se desenrola em varias cenas. A primeira corresponde ao Reto, nela o Diabo se cruza com Florentino, ambos estão sós e desolados, e o mesmo o desafia, sendo a oportunidade e o local perfeitos. A segunda cena, representa a Florentino cantando em um sítio, a espera do retador, quem não tarda a apresentar-se iniciando-se ali um duelo, nisso com bandola, arpa, cuatro e maracás. Sendo que no final o Demônio é derrotado, algumas pessoas falam que por sua saída tem um conjunto de santos que logo desaparece. Os Lannos sugere que logo do encontro Florentino nunca mais voltará a cantar. Esta obra é de característica universal. Trata-se de um tema ancestral: a luta entre o bem e o mal. Recorre a temas que estão escritos na bíblia, a batalha entre o Anjo da morte e Jacobo, batalha da qual se define a mesma maneira que a batalha entre Florentino e o Diabo. Se define quando a manhã vem e a sua aparição sobre o monte. Este grande poema, imenso, produz com o tempo a sem duvida maior obra musical sinfônica da Venezuela. "La Cantata Criolla" (1954) do grande maestro Antonio Estévez. Esta é a obra musical venezuelana mais importante do século XX, uma obra que vem sido reconhecida como uma peça maestria da literatura musical universal.
