Charpentier: Magnificat, H 73 - Christie This is one of my favorite works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704), his Magnificat for three voices, H 73, composed in 1670-1671, a piece that is irresistibly advancing for about nine minutes. I had the beautiful version recorded in 1979 with Dominique Visse, Michel Laplénie, Philippe Cantor, and Les Arts Florissants conducted by William Christie. I was very pleasantly surprised when I discovered this video filmed 10 years later, where the same ensemble is accompanying three new singers, among them a 33-year-old Gérard Lesne. The Magnificat was preceded with a two-minute-long instrumental piece, that I have also uploaded. Gérard Lesne, countertenor Bernard Loonen, tenor François Fauché, bass Les Arts Florissants: Hugo Reyne, Jean-Pierre Nicolas, recorders Anne-Marie Lasla, Kaori Uemura, treble viols Elisabeth Matiffa, bass viol William Christie, organ Chapelle Royale du Château de Versailles December 1989 ___ PS: I want one of these treble viols. ;) PPS: William Christie was only 45; can you believe it? Les Arts Florissants, conductor: William Christie. WHERE SHALL I FLY? (Dejanira, Recitativo accompagnato) "Where shall I fly? Where hide this guilty head? Oh fatal error of misguided love! Oh cruel Nessus, how art thou revenged! Wretched I am! By me Alcides dies! These impious hands have sent my injured lord untimely to the shades! Let me be mad! Chain me, ye furies, to your iron beds. And lash my guilty ghosts with whips of scorpions! See! See! They come! Alecto with her snakes, Megaera fell, and black Tisiphone! See the dreadful sisters rise. Their baneful presence taints the skies! See the snaky whips they bear! What yellings rend my tortured ear!" Dress rehearsal in the Théâtre à l'Italienne of Cherbourg, on November 23, 2005. Atis: Anders Dahlin, haute-contre. Argie: Katia Velletaz, soprano. Anselme: Matthieu Lécroart, bass. Lorraine Hunt Lieberson - Quel prix de mon amour Lorraine Hunt singing the beautiful plaint, 'Quel prix de mon amour,' ('Such is the price of love') from Charpentier's powerful tragédie lyrique, Médée.
