Blackwater Founder Comes Under Fire Long before Congress demanded answers about his armed guards in Iraq, Erik Prince created his first army. The soldiers were made of lead, poured into molds by Prince himself. He put them on display in his bedroom and gave some to a childhood buddy in Holland, where Prince grew up an heir to an automotive fortune. Today, at 38, Prince, chief of Blackwater USA, has a real army — or at least the makings of one, with weapons, aircraft, armored vehicles and a thousand or more battle-hardened security personnel. He also has something he has spent his professional life avoiding: publicity. He appeared last week before a mostly hostile U.S. House committee investigating deadly shootings by Blackwater guards in Iraq. Prince aggressively parried attacks by Democratic critics against the private company he founded a decade ago. Blackwater, with its deep Republican roots, has become perhaps the best-known provider of overseas security services to the U.S. government. For some, its black-clad contractors are an enduring symbol of the Iraq war. Soldiers of fortune? "No," Prince insisted at Tuesday's hearing, just loyal Americans who "bleed red, white and blue." Killers of innocent Iraqis? Accidents happen in the "fog of war," he replied, noting that 27 Blackwater guards also have died during the Iraq war. Prince, who declined to be interviewed for this story, was steeped in free-market, faith-based, Republican values from a young age. His father, Edgar Prince, built Prince Corp., an auto parts and machinery manufacturer, into Holland's largest employer and was active in the city's redevelopment. Holland owes much of its rejuvenated downtown, including sidewalks heated in the winter, to the family. Edgar Prince also spent freely on conservative causes, providing seed money for the conservative Family Research Council, run by former presidential candidate Gary Bauer. Erik Prince, with three older sisters, was a hardworking boy, an athlete whose straight-arrow ways amazed classmates. At Holland Christian High, he neither drank nor smoked. He was one of two boys pictured in his senior yearbook with a crew cut. "One thing that sticks in my mind," said Edward Heethuis, who helped coach his state championship soccer team, is that "after practice every night, there were always balls to pick up and junk to get together to carry to the locker room. Erik was always the guy that stayed and picked up ... without being asked. He just did it." Prince also had strong political connections from a young age. His sister, Betsy, married Dick DeVos, whose family created Amway and, over the years, pumped millions of dollars into conservative campaigns. Betsy later chaired the state Republican Party and became a major fundraiser for President George W. Bush. By 19, Prince had made his first large contribution — $15,000 to the Republican Party. He has since personally donated more than $200,000 to GOP causes. After high school, Prince headed to the U.S. Naval Academy, only to quit after three semesters. He told friends he was disappointed in the maturity and morality of his fellow midshipmen. Prince landed an internship in the early 1990s in the White House under then-President George Bush. Again, he was disappointed. He later told the Grand Rapids Press: "I saw a lot of things I didn't agree with — homosexual groups being invited in, the budget agreement, the Clean Air Act, those kinds of bills." But he didn't reject politics. He stumped for Pat Buchanan and interned at Bauer's Family Research Council in Virginia. Although he rejected the Naval Academy, Prince joined the Navy. In 1993, after graduating from Hillsdale College, he landed a spot with the Navy SEALs, performing secret missions in Haiti and Bosnia. In 1995, his father died of a heart attack and Prince left the service to help with the family automotive business. The following year, the family sold the company to Johnson Controls for more than $1.3 billion. Prince returned to the Virginia Beach, area where he had served. There, he and another ex-Navy SEAL, Al Clark, developed plans for a training center for police and military personnel. The men settled on a now-7,000-acre facility along swampland in North Carolina. The enterprise, funded by Prince, was named Blackwater. In 2000, the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen led the Navy to look for someone to train sailors to identify and respond to terrorist threats. Blackwater won a contract. Business soared after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks — from about $200,000 in federal contracts in 2000 to nearly $600 million last year. Prince faced more tragedy at home: In 2003, his wife, Joan, died after a long battle with cancer, leaving four young children. Prince helped create a home for terminally ill cancer patients in her hometown of Schenectady, N.Y.
