Foxtrott aus Berlin: Michael Jary Orch. - Ja und nein! 1939 Michael JARY (Maksymilian Michał Jarczyk) was born in 1906 to the Polish family in Siemianowice Śląskie(Upper Silesia, Poland -- the territory occupied by Germany until the Ist WW). After completing his education in the Conservatory in Katowice, he was employed as a second conductor in the Theatre Orchestra in Nysa (Neisse), but he gave up his job to continue education in the elitary Musikhochschule in Berlin. He studied composition under direction of Franz Schreker, Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schönberg and Igor Strawinsky. But soon after his diploma concert, in February 1933 the young composer was classified as „a Polish Jew" and his works were banned. Under a pseudonim Michael Jary he started the new life, as a pianist performing in the clubs and a composer of popular hits. One of his songs the vedette of the Third Reich, Hilde Hildebrandt included into her repertoire. For Michał Jarczyk it meant the beginning of the great career. As the leader of Michael Jary Tanz-Orchester he recorded thousands of sides. He was a label name for Odeon, where he recorded with the most famous film stars and singers: Rudi Schuricke, Zarah Leander and dozens of others. His enormous popularity as well as environment of the leading personae in the cultural life of the Third Reich, made the Propaganda Minister Goebbels „forget" about his „incorrect" descent. Brevi note per coloro che non conoscono Klaus Wunderlich: Klaus, agli inizi della sua carriera, a volte, registrava i suoi brani con l'accompagnamento di un gruppo ritmico (batteria, basso, percussioni e talora chitarra). Successivamente adottò il metodo "multitraccia", cioè registrava i vari strumenti (suonati tutti da solo), sovrapponendo di volta in volta i vari registri d'organo alla traccia precedentemente già registrata, aggiungendo anche particolari effetti, creati sempre con l'organo (prima Hammond, poi Wersi). Anche la stessa batteria e il basso venivano suonati da lui stesso. Una curiosità: Wunderlich ha registrato la maggior parte dei suoi splendidi brani nel suo studio di registrazione privato, ricavato sotto la sua abitazione, ma dotato dei più aggiornati sistemi tecnologici di registrazione. Russian foxtrott from Poland: "Siemieczki", 1935 Siemieczki (Sunflower Seeds) - Russian fox-trott from the theatre "Hollywood" (Music: Fanny Gordon, text: Andrzej Włast) - Orkiestra taneczna "Odeon", dyr. Jerzy Gert, refren: Tatjana Mazurkiewicz, Odeon 1935 -------------------------------- "Odeon" dance orchestra was directed by the extremely talented musician and composer Jerzy Gert - who was in 1930s the artistical director of the Polish "Odeon" (- and, after WWII - the director of Cracow Broadcast Symphony Orchestra). The "Odeon" dance orchestra's interpretations of the ashionable foxtrotts and - especially! - the argentinian tangos, always were of the superb quality. The refrains for the "Odeon" orchestra's recordings were usually sung by Janusz Popławski, Albert Harris or Stefan Witas. Unfortunately, in the attainable sources I did not find any trace of the hereby refrainist: Tatjana Mazurkiewicz. Guessing from her Polish - strongly influenced by the Russian accent - one may figure out she being a kind of the upper class Bolshewik revolution survivor, who - after 1917 - found shelter in Poland. Or maybe - she was a Polish lady who had lived till 1917 in the far east of pre-war Poland, and, when the Bolshewic=s invaded, she had lost all her properties.So, in Warsaw of 1930s, she earns her living by singing refrains in the theatre "Hollywood" (-which, actually, was a cinema)..? The funny text by Andrzej Włast says about Russian village girl who does nothing but bite sunflower seeds and watch two boys, fighting for her.
