FIERY Marisa Galvany - ATTILA - Verdi - Part ONE MARISA GALVANY (1936- ) sings a peppery "Allor che I forti Corrono" from Verdi's ATTILA...as few others sing it. Keep in mind that Galvany also appeared in Wagner and late Puccini. Don't miss PART TWO of this "double aria." Marisa COULD and DID sing just about everything...and made every performance memorable. I sat in the front row at her final public apperance in Carnegie Hall about three years ago, when she was 68. She brought down the house! Some reference books refer to her as a mezzo-soprano. That aside, she COULD and DID sing things within a 3-octave range. Not unlike Callas, whom she admired, she sang an Aida in Mexico City and took the high e-flat ending---and held it---at the end of the Triumphial Scene. The audience went wild. From a sound standpoint, this video is somewhat lacking as the original recording was on a reel-to-reel tape that has begun to deteriorate. The recording itself was done from the audience. NO, Marisa Galvany is no relation to the legendary coloratura soprano, Maria Galvany. Marisa was born Myra Beth Genis in Paterson, New Jersey. She made her debut as Tosca in Seattle in 1968. She then sang with the New York City Opera (1972-74; 1978-1981). She was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in 1979 where she made her debut as Norma. She was at the Met during the seasons of 1978-'79 and 1984-'85. In the eyes on many, she was one of the most remarkable singers of the century. She appeared in lead roles in Traviata, Lucia, Macbeth, La Juive, Maria Stuarda, Masked Ball, Mefistofele, Medea, Mme Butterfly, Nabucco, Salome, Trovatore, Marino Faliero, Turandot, etc., etc. Tags: gmmix Marisa Galvany Attila soprano Metropolitan Opera |

FIERY Marisa Galvany - ATTILA - Verdi - Part TWO MARISA GALVANY (1936- ) sings "Santo di patria" from Verdi's ATTILA...with a gusto rarely paralleled. It's difficult to believe that when at the Met she was given some Wagnerian roles to sing. Galvany is seen (on the right, in the video) in a dressing room at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1979. The young lady in the blue dress is unknown to gmmix. Marisa COULD and DID sing just about everything...and made every performance memorable. MARIA GALVANY -- Edison Blue Amberol - Sonnambula "Cavatina" from the opera bellini's LA SONNAMBULA (actually, "Come per me sereno") by one of the most dazzling coloratura sopranos who ever lived---Maria Galvany (1878-1944). The 4-minute Blue Amberol cylinder is #28123. Born in Granada, Galvany studied at Madrid Conservatory. She made her debut as Lucia at Cartagena in 1897. Specializing in coloratura roles, she sang with great success in Spain and Italy, gaining her greatest popularity in South America. She also toured with a company that performed throughout Europe, including Russia, where she was a favorite singer. In London in 1909, she appeared at Drury Lane as Amina, Rosina, and in the title role of Meyerbeer's Dinorah. In Lisbon she sang uninterruptedly for 15 years at the Coliseu. She gained great success in Parma, Venice, and Genoa. Galvany NEVER appeared at La Scala, the Met, the Teatro Cólon, or Covent Garden. She retired to Brazil and died there in poverty. She recorded a number of Edison Diamond Discs, mostly 12-inchers, none of which ever was released to the public. A few of the brown wax disc masters survive. Collectors probably are wondering what happened to the phonograph's lid. It's been removed temporarity so that an 8-foot brass horn can readily be attached to the reproducer for incredible volume and fullness of sound. You wouldn't believe the difference such a horn makes! More of my Blue Amberols will be added to YouTube. Check "gmmix" from time to time for more. I bought well over 1200 B.A.'s "brand new" years back from the last Edison jobber in the world—-Clarence A. Ferguson of South Center St., Merrill, Wis., who still had a huge warehouse full of "factory fresh" Edison cylinders and discs when I was in my teens. BRILLIANT singing & a BRILLIANT recording. Contrary to what you're thinking, some of you night recognize the latter part of this song, which is very beautiful and lively. This disc was never released in the U.S.A., which explains why it's generally UNKNOWN. Galvany made 22 "G & T Victor" recordings, most of which were not in U.S. catalogs. Maria Galvany & Titta Ruffo -- HAMLET Love Duet -- Victor 2 Legendary coloratura soprano MARIA GALVANY and baritone Titta Ruffo, known for having one of the most stentorian operatic voices of all times, perform "Nega se puoi la luce" (Love Duet from Act 1) from Ambroise Thomas's HAMLET....Victor #92500. Check my other videos for biographical data on Galvany (1878-1944). TITTA RUFFO (1877-1953), whose real name was Ruffo Cafiero Titta, was born in Pisa, the son of a metal worker who grew up in poverty. Though he learned the trade of an iron worker and worked at it for a period, his vocal talent had become evident and several mentors enabled him to study at the Academia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. His debut took place when 21 in 1898---as the Herald in Lohengrin. In subsequent years he toured the Italian provinces as Rigoletto, Barnaba, Carlos and Rigoletto. He was triumphantly successful at Covent Garden, Egypt, South America, and Imperial Russia. In 1905 he debuted in his most famous role, AMLETO in Thomas' opera HAMLET, which he sang at various opera houses; frequently the opera was staged only for him. Though he sang several times opposite Enrico Caruso, it's alleged he used his influence to prevent Ruffo's appearance at the Met. That aside, the two got along well together. Ruffo made his Met debut in 1922, a year after Caruso's death. It's said that by that time, his voice was already in decline. Nevertheless, he stayed until 1929. After ending his operatic career, Ruffo lived in Italy but, as a vehement opponent of the Mussolini regime, he was ostracised for many years. His brother-in-law was a socialist who was murdered by the fascists. THIS RECORDING is quite different from most of GALVANY's other discs in that there is no display of her customary vocal pyrotechnics. THE TALKING MACHINE is a VICTOR 2 (#9363), c. 1906. Purists will readily notice that the Exhibition sound box was replaced with a later Victrola #2 sound box. The original flower-type horn is in attic storage. I also have an Orthophonic sound box to use with this machine. This is a one-wind one-play unit that I purchased at age 11 for $1 at Hope Rescue Mission's store in Reading, PA. As is obvious from its surroundings, this machine has been in "dead storage." Tags: gmmix Galvany Ruffo HAMLET opera Victor classical |

MARIA GALVANY -- Pathe Disc - Dinorah "Shadow Song" Coloratura soprano MARIA GALVANY sings "Valzer: Ombra Legcera" (Shadow Song) from Meyerbeer's opera DINORAH......Pathe, outside-start 11 ¼-inch disc #10095,which plays at 80 r.p.m. The machine is a PATHE Actuelle "diffuser-type" player that uses a paper cone to amplify the sound. A sapphire ball is the "stylus" used to actuate sound vibrations that pass through a metalic straw-like tube that runs through the center of the larger gold-colored "tone arm" tube, back to the center of the cone....not unlike a radio speaker. NOTE: The sound would have been more pleasing if I hadn't been boxed in and could have gotten further away from the cone....and....if I could have boosted the humidity of the room closer to 40 percent, rather than the 8 percent it was. The paper cone---and it IS paper---is extremely sensitive and reactive to humidity. An extremely dry room renders sound eminating from the cone somewhat strident. When humidified, the cone produces a much more mellow sound. PROBABLY, I WILL REMAKE THIS VIDEO NEXT SUMMER, WITH ALL THE ROOM-WINDOWS OPENED, ON A HUMID DAY to show the difference in sound. coloratura MARIE GALVANY - Romeo & Julliet "Waltz" The legendary coloratura MARIA GALVANY sings "Valzer" from Gounod's "Giulietta e Romeo," on a 12-inch red label Gramophone Monarch Record. Carlo Sabaino conducts the orchestra. This "angel-back" disc, numbered 053163, was recorded in Milan in 1907. It was not issued in the United States. This recording has clear sound but rather heavy surface hiss. When a disc appears in beautiful condition but produces considerable hiss, the problem can often be traced to playings using a cactus needle or a bamboo stylus--which once were popular. - - - - - - - - - - - Marisa Galvany (1878-1944), one of the most dazzling coloratura sopranos who every lived, was born in Granada and studied at Madrid Conservatory.
