Gerber Harsey Air Rangers: Speed Need Light and fast. That pretty much describes the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger knives. These folders are great examples of why I say an automatic knife really isn't necessary. Just a purpposeful flick of the thumb brings these blades out FAST. You have to actuate an Air Ranger to appreciate the balance of the pivots which use Teflon washers for increased lubricity. Other upsides include: functional clip blades with good belly, atractive milled aluminum handles (matte grey standard, other colors previously issued), good thumbstuds. and reasonable cost. Possible downsides would include: AUS-8A steel that tends towards the soft side (but sharpens easily), squared shoulders on the handle, non-moveable tip down carry clip, and somewhat thick blade doesn't silice as well as a thinner blade (for EDC use) and may need reprofiling of the relief edge for true sharpness. The Air Ranger II is a hard find now, being discontinued, but makes a good 4.0 oz tactical knife choice with its 4" blade (and I got it for a steal of a price). But for the money spent, the Gerber Air Rangers are fun, fast, and light and excel in both usefulness and enjoyability./////////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 7 out of 10 for Ranger 1, 8 out of 10 for Ranger II Tags: spyderco endura frn edc knife review nutnfancy vg10 folding tactical blade lockup lockback boye pacific salt h1 |

Undertow - Original Song - Matt Gerber To hear more from Matt go to http://www.myspace.com/thedeadlyvenoms and to hear more from me go to http://www.myspace.com/trickofdisaster UNDERTOW Two coins, to pay the Ferrymans toll Two coins, to save my babys soul. I could try, to swim this river black, But if I try, I aint coming back. You can jump in the water, But youve gotta watch that undertow. Fool., is what the Ferryman said, He said Fool, Youre gonna lose your head! But I, have the Sibyls bough, And only I, can save my baby now. You can jump in the water, But youve gotta watch that undertow. Oh please, say you havent supped, Baby please, the pleasures here corrupt. Oh now I must go back home, Only now, I return alone. You can jump in the water, But youve gotta watch that undertow. Name: Matt Gerber Home town: Toronto, Ontario Hobbies: Writing music, playing music, camping, watching movies, snowboarding. Gerber Combat Folder: Something Wicked This Way Comes With a menacing 4.5" dagger blade and comfortably large, impact-capable handle, the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder is a mean blade. Few folding tactical blades match its reach and penetration capabilities at this weight and price range. Downsides would be the goofy mystery steel (425 M) that Gerber forces upon us and the pivot-mounted, non-switchable pocket clip. But the rest is outstanding: fast deployment, solid lockup, strong and fold proof Interlock locking system, blackened SS clip that's stout and contoured to handle, and a useful sheath. While a dedicated thrust cutter (dagger) design, the Gerber Combat Folder could also serve in some limited utility tasks as well. But it's main function is to provide you with a deadly backup weapon. And, like mine, it can be made even more effective in this calling by some expert sharpening of the upper edge which is fully protected within the handle. This is another highly recommended folding knife for deploying, combat-engaged Allied troops. Despite the funky steel, I give the Combat Folder a 9 of 10 on my likability rating. Part 1 Gerber Multi-plier 600: Half Priced, Half Baked In this 3-part series I pit the Gerber 600 multi-tool against a proven favorite of mine, the Leatherman Charge Ti. Granted these are differently priced MTs but both compete in the full-size category and it's a fair comparison in the given terms of size, weight, ease of use, comfort, toughness, versatility, carry case design, quality/feel, and price. Even the more expensive Gerber DET multi-tool would get smoked by the Charge in most of these categories (like inability to access blades from exterior). To be fair however, the Gerber 600 still is a useful enough tool for fair price. However its use of Gerber's mystery steel, bad design elements, bulkiness, rickety feel, inelegant interface of tool bits, and unimaginative sheath makes it a very distant second to the outstanding Leatherman Charge series (Ti, TTi, AL, ALX). Winner: Leatherman Charge... by a landslide. (This Gerber 600 is the current multi-tool/knife of a USAF survival vest I will review and I will reference this series to flesh out that review.)
