Sir John Gielgud - Prospero's Books - The Tempest Peter Greenaway's Fellini-esque vision of "The Tempest," by William Shakespeare, is a must-own film that bears many repeated viewings. John Gielgud reads every part, with other voices overlayed for various characters. The dreamlike, lush atmosphere of the movie frames the timeless language of Shakespeare in it's intended setting of incantation, ritual, and sensuality. There's a lot of nudity in the movie, but it's incidental - the real star is Shakespeare himself - this is Peter Greenaway's loving tribute. God of Carnage autograph session from the Gielgud Theatre As an autograph collector in London I am never short of oppurtunities for meeting famous people and this night it was a great oppurtunity. Ralph Fiennes has a touch of self importance about himself insisting on security and a barrier but Janet Mcteer, Ken Stott and Tamsin Greig are very patient and friendly with the fans. John Gielgud & Edith Evans: The Importance of Being Earnest John Gielgud & Edith Evans as John Worthing and Lady Augusta Bracknell in the famous 'handbag' interrogation scene in the play by Oscar Wilde I feel Edith Evans' portrayal far superior to that of Judi Dench's, although I haven't heard or seen Maggie Smith's performance in the role which I am sure equalled or surpassed even that of Dame Edith. John Gielgud - Ulysses (1996) From 'ULYSSES' performed by Sir John Gielgud Come, my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths Of all the western stars, until I die. It may be that the gulfs will wash us down; It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles, And see the great Achilles, whom we knew. Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are. One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Alfred Tennyson Tags: john gielgud ulysses ubs |
