ZANE LOCKETT BALCONYTV.COM 7/10/2008 PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN About Zane Lockett I'm originally from Taranaki, New Zealand and am currently living in Dublin after travelling round Thailand and Europe for 8 weeks late last year. I'm currently gigging around in band Neither The Dogs and am gigging and busking with my flautist mate Maor as a bit of a side project as well. These songs are getting a little old now (and are freakin minimal!) so I'm going to get some new stuff up here with more instrumentation etc in the next month or so. An E.P. is in the making at the moment too so there's some raucous times ahead. If you're in Dublin and keen to jam, drop me a line. http://www.myspace.com/zanelockett Tune in again tomorrow!!! ROXY RAWSON http://www.balconytv.co.uk 19/11/2008 PRESENTED BY GREG BARNES The versatile, classically-trained Roxy Rawson was nominated for an Indy Award in 2008, having been gigging on the London scene for years. Inspired by Regina Spektor, poetry on the tube and Wuthering Heights, she promises to hand-make a CD and post it to you if you send her a message through her myspace. Roxy has been described as "beautifully peculiar; a sweet mix of classical notes and frenzied, catch-me-if-you-can lyrics interspersed with bursts of laughter" and "lovingly crafted, spontaneously eccentric and musically dazzling", and you can hear her in the Inspiral Lounge on the 22nd of this month as well as at the Cross Kings with David Goo on the 30th. http://www.myspace.com/roxyrawson http://www.roxyrawson.com/ Tune in again tomorrow! KIRAN AND THE NIGHT OWLS http://www.balconytv.co.uk 01/12/2008 PRESENTED BY GREG BARNES The band formed at the close of 2007 as the brainchild of Kiran Hungin, a singer/songwriter from the north-east. Kiran had been doing acoustic gigs on the London circuit for the previous two years, but couldnt fight that niggling feeling that something was missing... I have had the good fortune to work with some amazing musicians, but I had just always craved that feeling of having a musical family; a little crew to join me in the the ups, downs and everything in between. And to be honest, I just want a band behind my tunes.. to add that much needed element of kick-ass-ness that I want! So the night owls were born, and can now be found gigging around London and other parts of the UK. Im so happy with the band. It is honestly the first time I just feel like the music is totally how I envisaged it from the early demos, when I was playing only a piano part, but hearing much more in my head. For us now, the real work begins, but also the fun!... along with crossing our fingers for that little gift from lady luck that every artist hopes will flow their way.... http://www.kiranandthenightowls.com/home.html http://www.myspace.com/kiranandthenightowls Tune in again tomorrow! SOULMOTOR on CAPITAL CHAOS TV 1999 http://www.capitalchaos.net SOULMOTOR @ Hornet Stadium - Sacramento, CA 1999 featuring Brian Wheat of TESLA on bass & Atomic Tommy M ex UFO on guitar @ Hornet Stadium - Sacramento, CA 1999 also on the bill were MEGADETH, STAIND, COLD & others...Formed in 1996 from the ashes of Tesla, the band briefly reunited bassist Brian Wheat with guitarist Frank Hannon.http://www.soulmotor.com/ Adding vocalist Darin Wood and drummer Darren Minter, the group began gigging locally, but after a few months Hannon exited to form "Moon Dog Mane", and was replaced by Tommy McClendon. http://www.myspace.com/soulmotor In 1997 SoulMotor issued their debut album "In Super Hi-Fi Sound", which was sold over the internet as well as at live dates; the exposure brought the group to the attention of the CMC International label, and after replacing Minter with drummer Mike Vanderhule (Currently of Y&T) they issued their self-titled LP in the spring of 1999 with the top 20 song at active rock "Guardian Angel" with an extensive tour following. http://www.thecutting-edge.net/soulmotor.html Selling 30,000 copies Although built from the remnants of Tesla, SoulMotor has little of the original band's flavor. In fact, the band has more in common with modern-day heavy metal bands especially on this their 2nd release "Revolution wheel". The production on "Revolution Wheel" is pounding riff-rock at its finest with a crushing rhythm section. That crush is attributed to the addition of yet another Tesla band mate, drummer Troy Luccketta. The lyrics have also taken a radical turn focusing on the dichotomy of modern man -- the break down of the soul of man. A number of industrial references pull at the idea of man being controlled by machines as if to counter flesh and steel. Some of it comes off angry (Shut Down, Gods And Monsters, Today) other bits are more concepted (Brand New You, Man Made God, Long Live The New Machine). Tesla reformed and did a surprisingly successful string of dates putting Soulmotor on the backburner. The record was eventually finished in the fall of 2001. However, by then CMC had been pulled into the Sanctuary giant and the record was release in the beginning of 2002 with little to no fan-fair. Since Tesla is also signed to Sanctuary and a much higher profile. "Revolution Wheel" got buried by Sanctuary. Different than Tesla but both bands offer a unique style. Now this brings us to 2007 With Tesla firmly established back in the contemporary rock world Brian and Darin have decided to put out another SoulMotor CD With the addition of original SoulMotor drummer Mike Vanderhule And new to the Motor Dave Rude who Brian has been working with In Tesla. Look for the new CD in the early part of 2008! One of the tracks will be "Down in Mexico" . http://store.sanctuaryrecords.com/411 Tags: soulmotor tesla sacramento rock ufo brian wheat capitalchaos |

JAMIE LAWSON http://www.balconytv.co.uk 03/12/2008 PRESENTED BY LAYLA ANNA-LEE So why give your time and attention to Jamie? Its not as if theres any obvious shortage of young singer/songwriters right now. Far from it. But even in a crowded marketplace there will always be room for an artist who has what it takes to be better than the rest. And if you love music and have a heart and a pair of ears, youll recognise within the space of just one song that here is exactly that sort of someone. A musician and lyricist of uncommon and mature gift, and one blessed with a gloriously fluid and expressive voice, he is as the title of his introductory single suggests, the Real Thing. The back story? Jamie was born and raised in Plymouth in what was he says a resolutely non-musical household. No-one sang or played anything. We didnt have any records. Then the elder of his two brothers hit adolescence and things began to change: He got me into The Smiths, The Housemartins, the Jackson 5 ... Aged eight, he asked for and received his first guitar. Early on in secondary school, he was invited to join his first band. He was writing material of his own too, all of it terrible to start with, of course. Id be 17 at least before I came up with anything good. When he did properly uncover it, his voice proved to be something very special indeed. No one who has heard him sing live would disagree (and in addition to his own regular schedule of gigging, he has played with artists including The Frames, Martha Wainwright and Damien Rice, as well as having been chosen as opening act for outdoor gigs by both Van Morrison and Katie Melua). There was a brief and half-hearted attempt at following a different career path. But unhappy and unfulfilled in his earliest weeks at Art College, Jamie sought the advice of a counsellor who then asked him, So what do you want to do with your life? And when I said that I wanted to be a singer she told me, Then go and do it! which totally surprised me but which was absolutely the right thing to say. I met that woman just once and for five minutes. I dont even know her name. But she showed me what I had to do. His single, the taster for an album now nearing completion and due for release later this year, shows exactly how good he is at doing just that. To repeat, it is - and he is - the Real Thing. http://www.myspace.com/jamielawson http://www.jamielawsonmusic.com/ Tune in again tomorrow! Tags: balcony balconytv jamie lawson london tv uk |

JOE CLEERE http://www.balconytv.ie BALCONYTV DUBLIN 7/01/2008 PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN Joe Cleere, as a music artist has been traveling a long route to hopeful success. Cleere picked up guitar at 11 years old and played his first gig at 12, under the act "Joe plays Jimmy (Hendrix)". At just fourteen Joe recorded his first EP in a friends studio in Finland. Subsequently a song from this disc, "How Does It Feel", entered the final of the Jacobs 2Fm Song Contest 2001. The contest was aired live on 2fm from Vicar ST, Dublin. Having received a taste for the music world Cleere, kept working hard on improving his song writing, singing and musicianship. He also started building a demo recording studio. Two years later at 16 Joe was back in the 2fm song contest final 2003, this time with a song called "All the Same". After leaving Cert Joe decided to study a degree in PR & Communications at IT Carlow. His first year in college saw him winning the National IT Song Factor 2005. This was then followed by Cleere and his band winning the 2fm song contest 2006 of which funded the completion of his home recording studio now named "Fretless Records", which has recorded a host of local acts including the recent chart hit "Irish Party" by Shakey which reached 26 in the Irish Charts. After graduating college Joe began recording his debut album East/West in his own studio Fretless Records. The album was then mixed by Phil Magee (Chili Studio Dublin, Westlife's Brian McFadden, The Script) and mastered in Sterling Sound New York by Steve Fallone (The Strokes, Sonic Youth and James Brown). This year Joe received an Artlinks Bursary Award of €8,000 to help fund his release. The first single Queue was launched on September 13th from Radio City Dublin and the album will be released in February 2009. The band will also be giving away 10,000 free copies of "Queue" this year to mark the introduction of the act into the music industry. Cleere and his Band have been gigging around Ireland extensively over the past few years, playing venues such as Eamonn Dorans, Cleeres Theatre, Voodoo Lounge and support slots for bands such as The Script (2008). They have also traveled as far as Slovakia to play festivals. On releasing the album the band hope to start touring further in Europe and the UK. http://www.myspace.com/joecleere Also check out - BALCONYTV LONDON http://www.balconytv.co.uk BALCONYTV HAMBURG http://www.balconytv.de Tune in again tomorrow!!! Banker Seeks Fortune as Rock Musician And on a final note... the current financial crisis has many people concerned about whether they'll make enough money to put food on the table. Well one London banker has hung up his suit and well-paying profession for a less than financially stable job. As the global economy suffers from its worst financial crises in eighty years, the music industry would not traditionally be considered a career safe haven for people seeking fame and fortune, but that's exactly what Martyn Shone did, packing in his lucrative day job as a City worker at Credit Suisse in London's Canary Wharf and following his life long ambition to be a rock star. [Martyn Shone, Honey Ryder]: "I have always been into music, I have always aspired to be a professional musician, said guitarist Martyn Shone, one half of pop duo Honey Ryder during a break from rehearsal. "I did my degree in business and French, came to London and everyone needs to earn a wage and I just got a job in a bank as a consultant, I had a good time there, but I have always been playing music." Joining Shone in his life changing career move is business partner and fellow band member, singer-songwriter Lindsay O'Mahony. O'Mahony gave up her job at MTV to begin gigging with various bands around the London pub circuit before meeting Shone through mutual friends and forming the pop band Honey Ryder. [Martyn Shone, Honey Ryder]: "It takes a certain type of personality to go for your dream and go for it and to put your money where your mouth is really. People who know me well they know that I am a risk taker and I have always believed in this, always so people aren't that surprised really that I have been doing it full time. But obviously there are people have said, maybe you should stay where you are, the irony now is that the credit crunch is setting in and it almost looks a safer option anyway." Honey Ryder's debut album, "Rising Up," goes on general release in the UK on November 17. Tags: ntd financial crisis london banker profession finance global economy music industry career |

NICOLE MAGUIRE http://www.balconytv.ie BALCONYTV DUBLIN 4/12/2008 PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN Nicole Maguire was raised in Conna, Co. Cork.At only 22 years old she is already gaining a positive reputation amongst industry officials in Ireland and abroad. Sam Feldman, manager of the world famous Norah Jones called her voice simply beautiful. inspired by her uncles, Nicole picked up the guitar at the age of 12. After a mere 2 weeks she was joining in on their traditional music sessions. By thirteen she was composing her own material, beginning a lifelong journey as a songwriter. This fiery determination and passion for her art was not lost on one of her recent reviews. Samantha Cathall of the Avondhu press noted that nicole has grabbed her dream with both hands and is slowly but surely climbing her way to great success. Nicole's unique style of songwriting emerged from being exposed to artists such as tori Amos, Pj Harvey, The Cranberries, Tracy Chapman and the Beatles to name but a few. Publications such as Corks Evening Echo have described her compositions and solid...dynamic and sultry. Her song Mistaken was deemed as so damn catchy while Someone's Rose was so powerful. In the last four years Nicole has made many recordings, the most recent being the single 'lipstick girl' which was her debut single. Since then Nicole hasn't wasted a minute. She has been gigging up and down the country with the odd trip across the water to London's most prestigious intimate venues such as the Troubador. Nicole has also set up her own record label 'mistaken records' and is currently recording her debut album due for release later this year. http://www.myspace.com/nicolemaguireireland http://www.nicolemaguire.com/ Also check out - BALCONYTV LONDON http://www.balconytv.co.uk BALCONYTV HAMBURG http://www.balconytv.de Tune in again tomorrow!!! THE HEDRONS BALCONYTV.COM 14/06/2007 PRESENTED BY KIERON BLACK The Hedrons music is decidedly one part Ramones-esque brawn, one part femme-fatale roar, and one part ruthless guitar-driven nerve. Or as lead guitarist Rosie humorously puts it, "If you listen to us, you wouldn't realise it was girls until Tippi starts singing - you'd think it was a bunch of big hairy guys playing." And although the girls would personally describe their sound as the modern love child of the Foo Fighters and Joan Jett, they would also say that the very same is proudly godfathered by Iggy Pop & The Stooges. In 2005 The Hedrons were formed in their native Glasgow. With a relentless gigging schedule, a UK Top 20 indie single and further back-to-back Top 5 indie singles chart success, the four-piece have established themselves as one of the country's foremost emerging rock bands. This has only been further emphasized by the recent release of the band's debut album 'One More Won't Kill Us' which accomplished further indie chart triumph when it broke the Top 40 of the official UK indie album chart. In the UK throughout 2006, The Hedrons were the focus of many a press feature and gained plenty of airplay, including from the likes of Radio 1 and XFM. The band was first tipped in the NME who said of them 'an all-girl four-piece who sound like Patti Smith meets Penetration with a dash of early Blondie and a smidging of The Runaways... you have to hear this band!' Off the back of this attention and all their touring, The Hedrons were confirmed to perform at several summer UK summer festivals including Download at Donington, T In The Park and Guilfest. Of particular significance, the band was invited by the band Alice In Chains to step in as special guests at their only UK show at the London Astoria. Overall, The Hedrons satisfied a healthy appetite of over 120 gigs by the end of the year, accomplishing sell-out status at many venues up and down the UK / Ireland and generally causing much fan frenzy wherever they appeared. One of those gigs gained special significance, when in October The Hedrons became the first British band ever to play a live, virtual gig as 3-D figures inside the virtual world 'Second Life' as avatar's of the band performed in the customised venue 'The Hedro Dome' whilst the real band performed in Glasgow! Release wise, the band's first single 'Be My Friend' was released in July 2006 on Scottish indie label Measured Records and entered the official UK charts as a top 20 Indie Single, selling out of its limited edition vinyl pressing as did the second single 'I Need You' that was released in October and entered the same chart at number 5. A third single 'Heatseeker' was released in January 2007 and achieved identical top 5 indie chart success. The debut album 'One More Won't Kill Us' was released in February and was met with an official Top 40 indie album chart position. This year was kicked off in typical Hedrons fashion with the band hitting the road in the UK for yet another headline tour. The album has just been released in Japan to frenzied acclaim, and live dates there are currently being lined up. March will see them venture across the Atlantic for the first time as they fly in for a mini-tour across North America, including showcases at both Canadian Music Week and SXSW as well as dates in New York and California. Although The Hedrons have just started out in their career, they have already made a healthy impact on the music scene. And, according to drummer Soup, one thing's for sure, "For four girls, we make one hell of a noise." http://www.myspace.com/thehedrons http://www.thehedrons.com Tune in again tomorrow!!!
