Super Glitch Bros. A short time ago I had to go to a family reunion. I brought my laptop and NES ROMS and ROM hacking programs with me. I was messing around with Tile Layer Pro, and I remembered that there's "garbage" data at the top of the ROM when viewing tiles, which represents other things like sounds and level data. So I decided to swap graphic tiles back and forth to make things look messed up. I also edited the tiles directly above the graphic data, which happened to be the music and sound data. Yes, I know what you're thinking. I'm supposed to use a hex editor to do that. Well, scribbling on the tiles that represent the audio data is more fun. :D Additionally, I changed the header from Vertical mirroring to Horizontal mirroring, so that the scrolling looks crazy. Nothing is changed gameplay-wise, but it's still kinda funny to listen to the crappy music. Here are the results I got for the music: - Overworld - This one got pretty messed up. Random notes everywhere, and it seems that each instrument channel is going at a different tempo! - Underground - Not all that messed up, and it doesn't have a lot of messed-up potential anyways. But the good news is that a certain part of the song has a messed up tempo. - Underwater - Somewhat messed up, but what's really silly about this one is that the music restarts half-way into the song. - Castle - Didn't turn out too messed up. Must be the note pattern. - Bonus/Star - Pretty messed up. The drums seem off-beat with the other instruments, due to the slower tempo. - Death - I liked how this one turned out. Heh heh. - Game Over - Somewhat messed up, but not as much as I would have liked. - Flagpole Finish - This one got really messed up. I mean, I somehow even got it to do a Portamento Down on the last note in the song, even though the original song didn't have any Portamentos from what I remember. - "Your princess..." - I like this one too. It kind of goes along with what I did to Toad. Hee hee. - "Your quest is over" - I really need to work on this one some more. It's hardly messed up at all. Boo. Maybe I'll try out one of those Corruptors. Then I'll see if I can uncover more glitchy stuff, and this time, through the gameplay. Yay! Mew Glitch I figured out a glitch to capture a Level 7 Mew in Pokemon Red Version without Gameshark or Action Replay. Heres the Instructions: Intro & Preparation First of all, make sure the game you're playing is Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow Version. Now start by making sure you have a Pokemon capable of fly or teleport (fly is preferable). Make sure you have an adequate suplly of Pokeballs (Great Balls, Ultra Balls, etc.). Make sure you have a pokemon capable of weakening a level 7 Mew. Lastly, ensure that you have not battled with the guy with the Slowpoke on Nugget Bridge and the Gambler in front of the underground passage next to Lavender Town. Tutorial Start from Lavender Town and walk towards the Underground Passage. Make sure the man doesnt spot you and go inside. Save the game in case you screw up from here. Next, take one step south, you should be right outside the door but you shouldnt be able to see the Gambler. Then, take one step south and press start immediately after (if he sees you and your start menu doesnt show, reset your game and repeat the steps above until you get it right). Then, select a flying pokemon with fly and fly to Cerulean City (or teleport back to Lavender and walk back to Cerulean). You will notice an exclamation mark above the Gambler's head but you fly away right after. Once in Cerulean, head north to Nugget Bridge (towards Bill's House). You will notice that your start menu doesnt work because the game thinks that you're in a battle with the Gambler and during battles, the start menu is disabled. Then, go battle the guy with the Slowpoke but make sure he walks up to you (if you walk up to him, your game will freeze). Beat his Slowpoke and you win. Then, fly back to Lavender Town. Head west, back to where the Gambler is. Your start menu will suddenly pop up. Press 'B' to cancel the menu and a Level 7 Mew will appear. Weaken it, catch it, and enjoy. Pokemon Blue: "The Mew Glitch" revealed. Update: Everyone who is claiming this isn't R/B or is fake you all are complete morons. This video was recorded from an emulator playing this game in Super Game Boy mode (the SNES cartridge that lets you play your games on the TV). Pokemon Red/Blue (and many other GB games) have special Super Game Boy pallets saved into their memory that can be accessed by playing the games on your Super Game Boy. I don't know how many times I have to say that. The first time I read about this glitch, I was no longer really interested in the games anymore, but it sounded so awesome for being recently discovered. This is a demonstration of the popular "Mew Glitch", which lets you get the Mew without having to use Gameshark or pray that Nintendo will do another Pokemon tour... with Red and Blue. Anyways, here's the breakdown for you if you're interested in trying it yourself. You need Fly, the Youngster Trainer with the Slowpoke by Bill's House, and the Gambler Trainer at the underground tunnel entrance in Route 8. 1) Go above the Gambler so he is one square off of the screen. Take a step down and hold Start mid-step. 2) The start menu should come up. Fly to Cerulean City. The Gambler will see you, but it's too late, you're off. 3) You will be in Cerulean City, and the Start button will not work now. Go up Nugget Bridge and make your way to the Youngster. 4) Walk above him so he sees you and has to walk up to you, or else the game will freeze. Beat him and fly back to Lavender Town. 5) Start walking towards Route 8, like you're heading back towards the Gambler. Once you step into Route 8, the pause menu will come back up. When you exit this menu, a Level 7 Mew will attack you. Unless you're cheating and getting free Master Balls, this is a hard battle. Try to paralyze Mew and get her health down as far as you can.
