Hidden Face of Globalization In the global economy, corporations demand enforceable laws - intellectual property and copyright laws - backed up by sanctions to protect their products. However, when we ask these same companies, "Can't we also protect the rights of the 16-year-old who made the product?," the companies respond: "No. That would be an impediment to free trade!" Young garment workers in Bangladesh share their experiences working for companies like Disney and Wal-Mart. Globalization and the Flow of Knowledge Speakers: AnnaLee Saxenian, Dean, School of Information and Professor, City and Regional Planning, University of California, Berkeley. Steven Weber, Director, Institute of International Studies and Professor, Political Science The mobility of skilled labor is transforming the flow of knowledge around the world. As U.S.-educated engineers and professionals return to their home countries, they are turning what once was a brain drain into a two-way process of brain circulation. These professionals are transferring to developing regions the technology and managerial know-how that once resided exclusively in advanced economies like the U.S. This process is fueling the emergence of new centers of technology entrepreneurship and creating new competitors for Silicon Valley and foreshadows persistent global skill shortages in coming decades. No Logo: Brands, Globalization & Resistance http://www.mediaed.org Featuring Naomi Klein. In the age of the brand, logos are everywhere. But why do some of the world's best-known brands find themselves on the wrong end of the spray paint can the targets of anti-corporate campaigns by activists and protestors? No Logo, based on the best-selling book by Canadian journalist and activist Naomi Klein, reveals the reasons behind the backlash against the increasing economic and cultural reach of multinational companies. Analyzing how brands like Nike,The Gap, and Tommy Hilfiger became revered symbols worldwide, Klein argues that globalization is a process whereby corporations discovered that profits lay not in making products (outsourced to low-wage workers in developing countries), but in creating branded identities people adopt in their lifestyles. Using hundreds of media examples, No Logo shows how the commercial takeover of public space, destruction of consumer choice, and replacement of real jobs with temporary work the dynamics of corporate globalization impact everyone, everywhere. It also draws attention to the democratic resistance arising globally to challenge the hegemony of brands. Jerry Mander - Globalization and Indigenous Cultures Complete video at: http://www.fora.tv/fora/showthread.php?t=533 Author and social critic Jerry Mander discusses how the cultural concepts of indigenous peoples endure despite globalization, and speculates on the benefits of adapting these ideas to modern life. ----- In this spirited book, Jerry Mander partners with the celebrated indigenous leader Victoria Tauli-Corpuz to gather powerful firsthand reports on a momentous collision of worldviews that pits the forces of economic globalization against the Earth's indigenous peoples. With many of the planet's remaining natural resources on indigenous lands, traditional practices of biodiversity preservation have, ironically, made these lands targets for global corporations seeking the last forests, genetic and plant materials, oil, and minerals to feed their unsustainable growth. Corporate invaders often employ military force, as well as harsh pressures from the World Bank, IMF, and WTO. But native peoples refuse to be victims; their stories of resistance and growing success are gathered here by twenty-five writers to describe the impacts. Jerry Mander is founder of the International Forum on Globalization. His books include "In the Absence of the Sacred" and "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television" - Cody's Books Tags: culture native people social cultural economic growth critic author modern adapt globalisation change fora tv fora.tv |

Globalization: The Haves and Have Nots - 40 min doc See full film here: http://www.booserver.com/projects.php?ProjectID=977 17 April 2000 The city is besieged by 40,000 labour, environmental and human rights activists, claiming the WTO puts too much emphasis on 'free' rather than 'fair' trade. Not since the Industrial Revolution has the workPlace been so dramatically restructured. Globalization has been a triumph for the corporate giants and for e-commerce. But the explosion of international trade has also meant jeopardising jobs, forcing out local industries and an ever greater impact on the natural world. The scale of the Seatle protests took the world by surprise and was proof for many that it's time to re-examine the global economic machine Tags: Journeyman pictures Globalization Globalisation USA Macdonaldization World Human rights Fair trade |

The Globalization of the Automobile Industry Five years ago, an automaker would have to completely design, engineer and build a car all in the same country. Now, plants, assembly lines, design studios and engineering studios are all computerized, making it possible to design a car in Korea and have it engineered in the U.S. Advancements in technology have interconnected economies around the world- the effect being better prices on consumer good, especially cars. At this year's New York Auto Show, General Motors is showing off three mini concept cars collaborated from their design studios in ten different countries. The network of studios they have is far more powerful than if they were working individually. If a design team in Brazil comes up with a great idea, all the other design teams, be it Australia or Germany can all see it in virtual reality and can share their feedback. With a thousand designers around the world living the local customs, culture and driving conditions, General Motors and Chevrolet is opening the final design decision up to their consumers to chose which of the three vehicles debuting at the New York Auto show they'd like to see built.
