Projections showed Gustav arriving early next week as a Category 3 storm, with winds of 111 mph or greater, anywhere from the Florida Panhandle to eastern Texas. But forecasts are extremely tentative several days out, and the storm could change course and strength. Mississippi and Louisiana also were beginning preparations to switch interstate lanes so that all traffic would flow north, in the direction an evacuation would follow. A problem could be the Louisiana State University football game scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge. Gov. Jindal said he's not planning to have LSU call off its football team's home opener against Appalachian State. The 92,000-seat Tiger Stadium is sold out and thousands of tailgaters will fill the parking lots around it. But Jindal acknowledged that could change because the of the interference with contraflow. Nagin said people still living in the small trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Katrina should take immediate steps to plan evacuations. "Travel trailers are unsafe during heavy winds," Nagin said. "I want all of our citizens to make certain they have a plan for leaving the trailers when advised to do so." If an evacuation is ordered, the city will also put a curfew in place, Nagin said. Anyone who ignores the evacuation order and is on the streets after curfew will be arrested, he said. The city said it is prepared to move 30,000 residents in an evacuation; estimates put the city's current population between 310,000 to 340,000 people. There were about 454,000 here before Katrina hit. Unlike Katrina, there will be no massive shelter at the Superdome, in fact, no shelter at all was planned for the city. The city planned to use city buses to pick up people unable to leave on their own and ferry them to a staging area where they would be moved to shelters in northern Louisiana. The first 150 of 700 buses to move residents inland arrived at a staging area near New Orleans on Thursday, and officials in Mississippi were trying to decide when to move Katrina-battered residents along the coast who were still living in temporary homes, including trailers vulnerable to high wind. The planning for a potential evacuation is part of a massive outline drafted after Hurricane Katrina slammed ashore three years ago, flooding 80 percent of New Orleans and stranding thousands who couldn't get out in time. The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee ended June with a combined total of $92.3 million in the bank. The figure represents a notable fundraising jump, especially for the DNC. Obama reported $72 million cash on hand and the DNC $20.3 million. But the Democrats still lag Republican John McCain's presidential campaign and the Republican Party. Last week, McCain reported raising more than $22 million in June, which was his best month of the year. Together, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee began July with about $95 million in the bank. The $52 million is Obama's second best fundraising month of the year _ he raised $55 million in February. But the figure combines cash that can be spent in the remaining summer primary season as well as money that can only be spent in the fall. In earlier months, Obama was raising money almost exclusively for the primary. That means Obama, who has been maintaining a vigorous fundraising pace in the summer, can now raise money for the general election from donors who had already given the $2,300 limit for his primary race. Unlike McCain, Obama has chosen to bypass the presidential public financing system for the fall campaign, which would have provided him with $84 million but would have prevented him from raising private money. McCain has agreed to accept the public money, which puts a greater emphasis on party fundraising. The United States, at least for the moment, appears to be attempting to thwart another major war by threatening Iran with more sanctions, and as we can read as reported by the Associated Press News Service: "US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice threatened Iran with more sanctions Thursday after it failed to give an adequate response to the latest bid by Western powers to induce it to freeze uranium enrichment. "Iran has a way out if they ever wish, but we will seriously pursue sanctions if they don't," Rice told Yahoo! News and the magazine Politico. "You have to hope that there are reasonable people in Iran who see this as not the way to run a country." On Katrina's 3rd anniversary, another storm brews By MARY FOSTER, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 46 minutes ago NEW ORLEANS - The solemn ceremonies for the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on Friday for the most part were blown away by Tropical Storm Gustav, which threatens to become a hurricane and poses the biggest threat to New Orleans since the killer 2005 storm. ADVERTISEMENT An early morning symbolic burial service in honor of the unclaimed bodies left behind by Katrina, and a bell ringing service scheduled for 9:38 a.m. CDT — when the first levee broke inundating the city — were the only events that remained on what would have been a day of remembrance of the devastating storm. Instead, preparations were under way in the event Gustav struck early next week. The National Guard was scheduled to begin convoying into New Orleans on Friday, while some nursing homes and hospitals planned to start moving patients further inland and the state began moving 9,000 inmates from coastal lockups. An evacuation order for New Orleans was likely, Mayor Ray Nagin said, but not before Saturday Meanwhile, residents of areas further south could be told to leave starting Friday, Gov. Bobby Jindal said. Federal, state and local officials expressed confidence that plans put in place since Katrina would protect residents. "Ladies and gentlmen, in my estimation, I think we're ready for this threat," Nagin told a news conference Thursday. The state activated 3,000 Guardsmen on Wednesday, another 2,000 on Thursday, Jindal said. Jindal said he has ordered 1,500 of them to be in New Orleans Friday. The new troops would beef up the 360 Guardsmen who have been in the city since Katrina helping to police the city. And as far away as New York City, ambulance companies were preparing to send trucks and crews down to the Gulf Coast. Citywide Mobile Response Corp. spokesman Isaac Newman said his company was dispatching five ambulances along with 15 crew members early Friday from its headquarters in the Bronx. Projections showed Gustav arriving early next week as a Category 3 storm, with winds of 111 mph or greater, anywhere from the Florida Panhandle to eastern Texas. But forecasts are extremely tentative several days out, and the storm could change course and strength. Mississippi and Louisiana also were beginning preparations to switch interstate lanes so that all traffic would flow north, in the direction an evacuation would follow. A problem could be the Louisiana State University football game scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge. Gov. Jindal said he's not planning to have LSU call off its football team's home opener against Appalachian State. The 92,000-seat Tiger Stadium is sold out and thousands of tailgaters will fill the parking lots around it. But Jindal acknowledged that could change because the of the interference with contraflow. Nagin said people still living in the small trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Katrina should take immediate steps to plan evacuations. "Travel trailers are unsafe during heavy winds," Nagin said. "I want all of our citizens to make certain they have a plan for leaving the trailers when advised to do so." If an evacuation is ordered, the city will also put a curfew in place, Nagin said. Anyone who ignores the evacuation order and is on the streets after curfew will be arrested, he said. The city said it is prepared to move 30,000 residents in an evacuation; estimates put the city's current population between 310,000 to 340,000 people. There were about 454,000 here before Katrina hit. Unlike Katrina, there will be no massive shelter at the Superdome, in fact, no shelter at all was planned for the city. The city planned to use city buses to pick up people unable to leave on their own and ferry them to a staging area where they would be moved to shelters in northern Louisiana. The first 150 of 700 buses to move residents inland arrived at a staging area near New Orleans on Thursday, and officials in Mississippi were trying to decide when to move Katrina-battered residents along the coast who were still living in temporary homes, including trailers vulnerable to high wind. Also, the towers required some $200 million in renovations and improvements, most of which related to removal and replacement of building materials declared to be health hazards in the years since the towers were built. It was well-known by the city of New York that the WTC was an asbestos bombshell. For years, the Port Authority treated the building like an aging dinosaur, attempting on several occasions to get permits to demolish the building for liability reasons, but being turned down due the known asbestos problem. Further, it was well-known the only reason the building was still standing until 9/11 was because it was too costly to disassemble the twin towers floor by floor since the Port Authority was prohibited legally from demolishing the buildings. [Arctic Beacon] Other New York developers had been driven into bankruptcy by the costly mandated renovations, and $200 million represented an entire year's worth of revenues from the World Trade Towers. The perfect collapse of the twin towers changed the picture. Under a pending agreement, a developer and his investors will get back most of the down payment that they made to lease the World Trade Center just six weeks before a terrorist attack destroyed the twin towers. Developer Larry Silverstein and investors Lloyd Goldman and Joseph Cayre are nearing a deal that would give them about $98 million of their original investment of $124 million, The New York Times reported Saturday. [MontereyHerald 11/22/2003] Instead of renovation, Silverstein is rebuilding, funded by the insurance coverage on the property which 'fortuitously' covered acts of terrorism. Liz Lands - Headline News Liz Lands, a lady with an extraordinary voice and a range of five octaves, released three singles on Motown's Gordy label, which are treasured and adored by Motown fans worldwide. She came to Motown via her association with Dr. Martin Luther King, and she sang at his rallies and speeches. Her first Motown single, "We Shall Overcome", was in fact coupled with Martin Luther King's speech of "I Have A Dream", which Motown released. After President Kennedy's tragic assassination in 1963, Liz released a tribute song called "May What he Lived For Live". Then in 1964, she released her most beloved record, the extraordinary combination of Liz Lands and The Temptations singing together on the classic "Keep Me", coupled with the revered Northern-Soul favourite, "Midnight Johnny". Liz then left Motown and joined One-Der-Ful records, out of Chicago, releasing a string of hits, including "One Man's Poison". She had many more releases on independent Chicago labels before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, and working with Hamilton Bohannon, alongside her fellow ex-Motown artist Carolyn Crawford. Bohannon also produced her on "Baby I'm For Real", a remake of the Motown classic by The Originals. After much detective work, including negotiating with a very reluctant Bohannon, I finally tracked her down in 1989, and flew her to Detroit twice. We recorded loads of solo tracks, plus two duets with the late great Johnny Bristol. We released a classic high energy single on her called "Starting All Over Again". Everyone called her Mad Lizzie, and she really had an amazing, almost uncontrollable voice. Marv Johnson was just potty about her. He kept commenting that she had hairy legs, and he used to say "Man, a woman with hairy legs means she's got fire in her bones" and he pestered her whenever she was in Detroit. Whether they actually got it on, or not, is anybody's guess. This song is her wonderful remake of one of Edwin Starr's early classics, "Headline News". ADVERTISEMENT The airliner said it has not yet determined the cause of the crash Wednesday, the nation's worst air disaster in nearly 25 years. Only 19 people survived. Spanair spokesman Javier Mendoza said a valve was reported overheating in the front of the plane under the cockpit and technicians corrected the problem by turning it off. Mendoza said the device is not on a list of equipment that has to be functional for a plane to take off. He told a news conference that turning off such a device in these circumstances is an accepted procedure. Spanair says the plane was eventually cleared by company technicians. The plane crashed on its second attempt to take off for the Canary Islands. Mendoza said the MD-82's two black box recorders have been recovered but one is damaged. Alvaro Gammicchia, an Iberia pilot who has flown MD-82 for seven years and represents the pilots union SEPLA, told The Associated Press that even without the valve working "the plane would not fail to the point of causing a tragedy." The Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that one of the two engines failed and may have caught fire during takeoff. Another paper, La Vanguardia, said witnesses saw the plane's left engine explode and catch fire before the aircraft went down.
