Corvette: An American Icon For 54 years, Corvette has been a symbol of the quintessential American sports car. It's come a long way since its debut in 1953. The 1957 Chevy My most favorite car of all time has to be the 1957 Chevy Nomad (and the '57 Belair...). So I was definitely in car heaven when I visited the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Height's, Mich., for an up-close and personal tour of this living repository of automotive history with Heritage Center Manager Greg Wallace. More than just a museum, the HC is an automotive enthusiast's dream garage, housing such famous classic, antique and concept vehicles as the 1931 V-16 Cadillac, the 1938 Buick Y-job, 1949 Buick Roadmaster, and 1957 Chevrolet Nomad and Belair convertibles — and it's only open to GM employees, scholars, analysts and the media. While I was in car heaven during my personal tour, my only regret was not being able to get some of these beauties out on the open road! The Saga of Oldsmobile For auto lovers, the demise of any brand is a sad story, and so is the saga of Oldsmobile. One of the oldest auto brands in the world after Daimler and Peugeot, sadly the GM line came to an end in 2004 after producing more than 32 million cars in its 107-year history, including such icons as the Rocket 88 and the Jetfire, featuring the first turbocharged engine, and the 442. Luckily, the brand lives on at the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Mich., which has a large collection of Oldsmobiles, as I found out during a tour with HC Manager Greg Wallace. Little GTO Perhaps the first true muscle car was the GTO. Made by Pontiac between 1964 and 1974, it was just one brainchild of Pontiac's chief engineer at the time, John DeLorean. During my tour of the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Mich., HC manager Greg Wallace introduced me to the original 1964 model GTO and "The Judge," the 1969 model GTO, whose name came from a comedy routine, "Here Comes the Judge", on the "Laugh-In" TV show. AFRICAN AMERICAN METHODIST HERITAGE CENTER (AAMHC) The history, heritage and hopes of United Methodists of African American descent are inextricably intertwined with the history, heritage and hopes of John Wesley's Methodism since its beginnings in North America. Yet, the whole church has been slow to celebrate that linkage, perhaps due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of that story of trials and triumphs. It is not widely known that: -In 1760, the first person of African heritage to be converted to Methodism was Peter Denis; -In 1765, when Robert Strawbridge preached in Baltimore one of the speakers was a man of African heritage, Caleb Hyland who later became a member of Sharp Street Methodist Church, one of Methodism's oldest African American churches; -The first Methodist class meeting in New York included a Black woman named Betty, a servant of Barbara Heck; -John Wesley himself chided a group at Fells Point in Baltimore for failing to include a group of Black persons as full participants; -Black Harry Hosier was a great preacher and colleague of Francis Asbury and along with Richard Allen was among the attendees at the Christmas Conference of 1784, when the Methodist Church in North America was organized. Cultural Heritage Centre Video - Africa Travel Channel http://www.africa-24.com Africa Travel Channel Video: The Cultural Heritage Centre is an institution in Arusha. Featured in the movie Hatari in the 1960's it has since moved from the center of town to its current premises and is the biggest African art and curio outlet in the whole of Africa. Walking around The Cultural Heritage Center, one cannot help but marvel at the sheer magnitude of this operation and it soon becomes apparent that an entire day just isn't enough time to take it all in. The sheer talent of African artists, be they sculptors, painters, woodcarvers or bead workers, is nothing less than mind numbing and the sensitivity with which it is showcased is as pleasing as the art itself. The coup de grace awaits. Nearing completion is Cultural Heritage Center's new art gallery. Built in the shape of an African drum in the shadow of a shield, this enormous edifice is destined to be one of the finest showcases for African art the world has ever seen.
