Jim Hession / The Charleston /James P. Johnson /stride http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession New piano CD's available as of April,2008 James P. Johnson, the father of stride piano, made history in 1923 by penning the quintessential pop tune and dance craze of the 1920's{better known as the "jazz age"}. Johnson, a student of Eubie Blake, followed Blake's 1921 "Shuffle Along" Broadway success with his own show, "Runnin' Wild". Here he utilizes the "Habenera" rhythm as the distinctive musical feature of the Charleston. This rendition leads off with a rubato treatment of the original verse. This piece was posted at the request of a YouTube viewer. Martha and I have done this as a piano/vocal feature in concerts for many years. This is a totally improvised rendition and stylistic elements of both Eubie Blake and James P. Johnson appeared as inevitable contributions to the mix. What a great addition to the stride repertoire for any two handed player! Tags: STRIDE Eubie Blake Charleston James P. Johnson stride solo jazz piano hession two-handed New Orleans |

Jim Hession plays Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker" http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Jim Hession performs a rendition of Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker" that he learned at age 16 from British jazz pianist Ron Weatherburn. Recorded at Fritzel's Jazz Pub, New Orleans French Quarter during the 2007 French Quarter Festival at the request of Austrian clarinetist Wolfgang Friedrich, who heard Jim perform the tune in Disneyland's French Quarter several years ago. The club on this particular night was standing room only, filled with musicians from across the world. This is the case many times a year as lovers of America's own music, jazz, flood into New Orleans to add Bourbon St. to their jazz credentials. Jim Hession records Oscar Peterson's Hymn To Freedom http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession New piano CD's available as of April,2008 Oscar Peterson is and has remained one of Hession's true inspirations. Jim pays tribute to Oscar in recording one of Peterson's originals for upcoming CD release.Recorded live in a " one take wonder" at the Word of Mouth Studios in Algiers/New Orleans Jim proves that inspiration is worth a thousand takes. Jim only met Oscar once in person-on Jim's 21st birthday at the Hong Kong Bar in Century City L.A. Jim was preparing to record with Eubie Blake in New York for the first time. Peterson blew us away and he ended the evening with a vocal rendition of "Isn't this a lovely way to spend an evening". What a voice, what a pianist, what a jazz icon! Jim Hession / Jingles / James P. Johnson / stride http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession New piano Cd's available as of April,2008 Back in the studio it was time to lay down some two-handed,stride piano solos. There are two basic goals in learning to play good stride piano: learning the mechanics of the style with particular attention to accuracy and developing the ability to improvise within the style and make it swing. After the initial statement of the trio theme in this cut, the rest is improvised. Several of you have contacted me about how to learn this style- first and foremost dig out recordings of the great stride players and listen with a critical ear. It also helps if you are well versed in music theory and harmony and have some classical training. Best of luck to all you aspiring stridists.....ROCK ON! Tags: STRIDE Jim Hession James P. Jim Hession & Mark Brooks / Night Train /Boogie Woogie http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession http://www.markabrooks.net There are three new CD's available as of April,2008. Night Train became one of the most popular Boogie Woogies of all time.In this cut, Jim and Mark dig into the boogie woogie groove and just swing hard and heavy. Trombonist Buddy Morrow had the definitive hit with this standard in the 1950's. Jim and Martha got to know Buddy and his wife through mutual friends, Walt Stuart(arranger and Perez Prado's high note trumpet artist)and his wife Barbara Stuart (Big Band singer) who became Martha's vocal coach in Florida while the Hessions did time with the Walt Disney World Park. When Jim and Martha left Florida and returned to California they were surprised how much they missed the creative arts and music community that had become their home. Jim Hession /Puttin' on the Ritz/ Irving Berlin http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession One thing that Jim has always enjoyed is taking music of the great American songbook era and improvising a piano solo that could extend anywhere from 5-20 plus choruses without repeating a musical idea. This cut was selected from two back-to-back takes that were completely different. An amusing idea was added at the end of this take when the recording engineer shouted:"Puttin' On the Ritz" in classic Peter Boyle style(as the monster) from Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein". Jim Hession / Avalon with thanks to Teddy Wilson http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Jim Hession performs Avalon, first recognized as a jazz hit for pianist Teddy Wilson in the early 1930's with the Benny Goodman Quartet, also featuring Lionel Hampton(vibes) and Gene Krupa(drums). Teddy was an incredible jazz pianist whose career stretched from the late 1920's to the 1980's, most notably his associations with both Goodman and Billie Holiday and as leader of his own groups. The Hessions first met Teddy in 1974 at a Kerrville, Texas jazz festival. They connected many times over the next few years in both Florida, New York City and California. Wilson had children both the age of Jim and Martha and the age of their children, so a get-together always involved talking music and interaction between "Uncle Teddy" and the Hession girls. Many late night sessions involved Teddy, and Jim and Martha reviewing tapes that Wilson collected of jazz performances from all over the world. He never tired of listening to new artists and analyzing their styles and music.Teddy constantly quizzed Jim on theory while listening to various artists. That was right down Jim's alley and thus these two really hit it off. On a visit to Florida in 1976 Teddy assisted Jim in editing his college lecture series on the evolution of jazz piano. The last time the Hessions and Teddy connected was in California at the time of a Hollywood Bowl concert. Rest in peace Uncle Teddy! Jim Hession / Handful of Keys / Fats Waller /stride http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession New piano CD's available as of April,2008. I first heard this piece at the age of 15 when I had recently departed classical lessons for the worlds of ragtime and New Orleans jazz. Waller's own rendition intrigued me to the point that I obtained the LP, playing it over and over as I tried the figures out at the piano. My family hated me for this ......oh well! I was driven to work on "Handful of Keys", as it was the first authentic "stride" solo that I had ever learned. It increased my growing interest in the historical development of jazz piano. Thanks to you, Fats! Years later when Martha and I were musical directors of Durango , Colo.'s Diamond Circle Theater we arranged a five part vocal arrangement that was performed for the summer season with great success. Hope you enjoy this rendition. This was recorded at Word of Mouth: Studio,June,2007.
