Hubble Deep Field: The Most Imp. Image Ever Taken (Redux) This is the latest incarnation of the HDF video. The narration has been edited to include research from a paper in Physical Review Letters (2004) which puts the size of the universe at 46.5 billion light years, not 78 billion as I originally stated. In the video narration, I round that value up to 47 billion light years. I also took out Numa Numa guy. Tags: astronomy space cosmology hubble telescopes universe |

Hubble Deep Field The image, called the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), was assembled from 342 separate exposures taken with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) for ten consecutive days between December 18 and 28, 1995. Representing a narrow "keyhole" view stretching to the visible horizon of the universe, the HDF image covers a speck of the sky only about the width of a dime located 75 feet away. Though the field is a very small sample of the heavens, it is considered representative of the typical distribution of galaxies in space because the universe, statistically, looks largely the same in all directions. Gazing into this small field, Hubble uncovered a bewildering assortment of at least 1,500 galaxies at various stages of evolution. Nearly a year of preparation preceded the observation. The HDF team selected a piece of sky near the handle of the Big Dipper (part of the northern circumpolar constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear). The field is far from the plane of our Galaxy and so is "uncluttered" of nearby objects, such as foreground stars. The field provides a "peephole" out of the galaxy that allows for a clear view all the way to the horizon of the universe. Test exposures made in early 1995 with Hubble and the 4-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory also confirmed the field is devoid of large galaxy clusters, which would interfere with seeing farther and fainter objects. The target field is, by necessity, in the continuous viewing zone (CVZ) of Hubble's orbit, a special region where Hubble can view the sky without being blocked by Earth or interference from the Sun or Moon. The most common type of galaxy in the universe are (or 'were') small irregular objects called blue dwarfs. However, they were edited out. Produced by astronomers at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Google: Hubble Deep Field Video Tape- A Journey Through Time and Space Tags: Hubble Deep Field |

Hubblecast 05: Hubble finds ring of dark matter An international team of astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a ghostly ring of dark matter formed long ago during a colossal collision between two galaxy clusters. This is the first time that dark matter has been found with a distribution that differs substantially from the distribution of ordinary matter. New Frontiers in Astronomy: Hubble and Beyond Google TechTalks April 11, 2006 Alberto Conti Carol Christian ABSTRACT A revolution is now underway in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The next decade will witness the completion of massive, wide-area, multicolor imaging and spectroscopic surveys of the local and distant Universe. With its strong legacy of public outreach, Hubble's Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) has been responsible for how most of the world views our universe. We recognize that, given the coming flood of information, the next step of this task is to allow users to actively explore the cosmos themselves. In this talk we hope to show some of the potential explorations of this wealth of data to help us all better... Tags: google howto new frontiers astronomy hubble |

HUBBLE TELESCOPE - Astronomy The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. Its position outside the Earth's atmosphere provides significant advantages over ground-based telescopes — images are not blurred by the atmosphere, there is no background from light scattered by the air, and the Hubble can observe ultra-violet light that is normally absorbed by the ozone layer in observations made from Earth. Since its launch in 1990, it has become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy. With it, astronomers have made many observations leading to breakthroughs in astrophysics. Hubble's Ultra Deep Field is the most sensitive astronomical optical image ever taken. From its original conception in 1946 until its launch, the project to build a space telescope was beset by delays and budget problems. Immediately after its 1990 launch, it was found that the main mirror suffered from spherical aberration, severely compromising the telescope's capabilities. However, after a servicing mission in 1993, the telescope was restored to its intended quality and became a vital research tool as well as a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST is part of NASA's Great Observatories series, with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.[1] Hubble is a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency. The story of the Hubble Space Telescope and where we go ... On August 11th, 2008 the Hubble Telescope hit the 100,000 orbit mark! Since its launch in April of 1990 the Hubble Space Telescope has been traveling at 5 miles per second with its on-board odometer racking up around 2.72 BILLION miles! That's about 5,700 trips to the moon and back! In October of this year the STS-125 crew will be be working on the 5th and final servicing mission to Hubble. There are currently 5 spacewalks scheduled for Atlantis where astronauts will install new equipment and repair broken instruments. Once this mission is complete, NASA's favorite telescope will need to live out the remainder of its days alone in space, with no chance of repair. This is the story of the Hubble Space Telescope, or HST. Tags: atlantis esa hst hubble james jwst nasa ov-104 space spacevidcast sts-125 sts-31 sts-61 telescope webb |

Hubble Telescope Deep space From its low orbit just 600 km (373 mi) above Earth's surface, the Hubble Space Telescope is able to observe the universe with incredible clarity. Free from the atmosphere's turbulent air that blurs incoming light and absorbs infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths, Hubble has taken over 400,000 observations and provided data for thousands of scientific papers. Since its launch in 1990, Hubble — the only space telescope to gather data in visible, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths — has offered a unique and detailed view of the universe. One of the most striking images produced by the telescope was the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). At the time of its release in 1996, HDF was the deepest optical view of the universe, showing the farthest and youngest galaxies ever to be seen. The image was taken of a tiny portion of sky and displays over 1,500 galaxies with a wide range of shapes and sizes. Tags: Hubble Telescope Deep space Kent hovind ken hamm |
