Adobe InDesign "preflight" vs Markzware's FlightCheck Preflighting or checking your digital layout before outputting to PDF and going to print is a real must for those concerned about quality. Adobe's InDesign has what they call a "preflight" function built-in. With this video we will compare Markzware's FlightCheck Professional to Adobe InDesign CS3's built-in "prelfighting." Over the years, we have seen more and more seemingly thinking that they are getting full-fledged "preflight" via Adobe InDesign's built-in preflight and gathering tool. I am here to tell you that this is simply not true. Furthermore, even calling it a "preflight" function is stretching it, as the tool is NOT rules-based. Meaning you can not set-up what you want to check for. It just provides info on colors, fonts and images and pretty limited at that. Vectorbabe, Sandee Cohen on Graph Expo, InDesign & more Interview with Sandee Cohen by Mary Gay Marchese MGM: Hi everybody, were here at Graph Expo here in Chicago and I have Sandee Cohen here and Sandee Ive a question for you. How did you first find out about Q2ID? SC: Well Ive always known about Q2ID, but what happened for me was, I had a job, I had a client who came in and they gave me a Quark file and I see, I started with ID before Quark 5, 6, 7, 8 happened so InDesign always opened Quark files for me, but they sent me a Quark, I guess it was a Quark 6 file and I looked at it in Quark and I said well you know this is an easy file, Ill replicate it in InDesign. It was a simple one-page thing. I didnt think anything of it. I finished it and suddenly realized there were 5 other pages in the file and I thought this is taking too long. This is not what I signed on for this project. So I immediately that day, that moment went to your website and downloaded Q2ID, opened it and tada. And what was more fascinating was, I had that page one which I had done on my own to do as a comparison and I have to tell you Q2ID did a better job than me and I do InDesign. DD: yeah, yeah. SC: So that was the story of how it happened. MGM: Wow thats a great story and hey everybody you heard it right from the expert Sandee I mean, it doesnt give that on the $%&* What here at the show... How is the show going for you? Are you finding some other interesting software? SC: Ahh You know one of the things that I just love about GraphExpo and for a printing, not a print person, but a software designer teacher as me. Some of these machines are a little too much hardware, but I really recommend to designers to come and see shows like this and if you arent at a show like this, go visit a print shop near you. It is really important to find out exactly whats happening when ink hits the paper. What do you mean theres glue. What do you mean theres, ahh, saddle stitching. What does that mean? And finding out about this stuff. So when I go around, Im really finding out what is the final product. And thats what this show is really good for. MGM: You whispered a little bit about $%&* on your company and you know expand upon that so people know how good, you know. I mean pretty much everyone knows Sandee but. SC: Hahaha. MGM: I mean everybody in the States. Hahaha. SC: Well I actually, people know me, my website is vectorbabe.com and Im vectorbabe. Off course my cats name is pixel and Ive been working with computer graphics, vector graphics and page layout for who knows how long. I, when people ask me what I do for a living, I teach computer graphics. Thats pretty much it. Demonstracja Q2ID (konwersja QuarkXPress na Adobe InDesign) Dzień dobry! Nazywam się Olga Mikołajczak. W tym krótkim filmie pokaże państwu, jak łatwe jest przekształcenie dokumentu z formatu QuarkXPress na dokument Adobe InDesign, używając programu Q2ID firmy Markzware. Najpierw, udajemy się do miejsca gdzie znajduje się nasz dokument i otwieramy go aby zobaczyć jak wyglada. Oto nasz dokument w QuarkXPress. Później otworzymy go ponowni, aby zobaczyć czy po konwersji document końcowy (w tym wypadku dokument InDesign), jest wierny pierwowzorowi. Teraz otwórzmy InDesign. Ten proces jest tak łatwy jak otwieranie dokumentu w InDesign, po prostu wybierz dokument i kilka second później będzie on już przekształcony. Q2ID przekształca wszystko automatycznie. Jak widać podczas tej demonstrcji, ten program pozwala zaoszczędzić wiele czasu. Teraz porównajmy dokument Quark z dokumentem InDesign. Convertir un fichier QuarkXPress au fichier Adobe InDesign Bonjour, je mappelle Angelique van Rijn et aujourdhui je vais vous montrer le programme Q2ID -Macintosh unWindows. Avec ce programme magnifique, cest très facile de convertir un fichier QuarkXPress au fichier InDesign. Dabord, nous allons à lemplacement du fichier et nous louvrons pour voir comment ca ressemble. Donc, ici cest le fichier QXP, nous louvrirons plus tard pour voir la précision de la conversion. Maintenant nous allons ouvrir InDesign. Juste aussi facile (comme) que Fichier - Ouvrir dans InDesign vous sélectionnez simplement un fichier QuarkXPress et le fichier est converti dans quelques secondes. Le programme (convers) convertit tout automatiquement pour vous. Comme vous pouvez voir cet outil peut vous économiser beaucoup de temps. Maintenant, nous allons comparer le fichier Quark avec le fichier InDesign. La conversion est surprenament complète, mais normalement un peu daméliorations sont nécessaire. Vous pouvez voir que la position du texte et des images et les couleurs sont converties. Interview by Mary Gay Marchese with Anne-Marie Concepcion - InDesign expert and co-founder of http://www.indesignsecrets.com MGM: Were at Graph Expo here in Chicago and we have Anne-Marie Concepcion here. Did I say that right? AMC: That was close enough. MGM: oh ok great! So tell us a little bit about design secrets and how you work with Markzware? AMC: Yeah sure, Im a trainer and I own a company here in Chicago called Seneca design & training and we do a lot of $%&* Training and a lot of InDesign training and Im a huge InDesign fan. Im also the co-host of InDesignSecrets.com for which Markzware is our Wonderful sponsor and I always $%&* the praises of that wonderful plug-in that your have which is Q2ID and in fact I wrote an article about it on CreativePro.com and showed screenshots of before and after of this intensely complicated electronic parts catalogue which actually belonged to one of my clients that had moved from Quark to InDesign and that is actually how they converted their templates ehm.. it was 10.000 little cells, right, tried to drop them in EPS graphics of electronic parts that would have taken a $%&*, I dont know how long, at least a weak for each page and theres 1700 pages in the temp file and they ran it through with your plug-in and opened up just about perfect in about less than a minute. So.. MGM: Lots of time savings in that one. AMC: Oh yeah and I cant say enough and you know I think your product even does a better job of converting Quark files into InDesign than InDesign does. I use it all the time; I mean it automatically converts Quark 3 and 4 $%&* when you have the Quark installed, which InDesign can do on its own, but I found better results especially with the styles. The styles were brilliant So Im a big fan and every time Im talking to a client, especially when Im teaching InDesign, I would say three quarters of them are moving from QuarkXpress and than I show them this plug-in plug in and than their jaws drop, because a part of their big decision was: alright, well weve got to bite the bullet, were gonna have to hire extra staff to convert these files you know. And than when they see that theyre like Hallelujah, you know. Seriously. And I love talking about a product that makes clients so happy. MGM: Thats great. Oh wow. Well you heard it everybody. This is coming from an expert in the industry, Marie, I mean shes.. AMC: Anne-Marie MGM: Anne-Marie is..she is DD: Its just like Mary Gay. They always used to call her Mary. MGM: Yeah, exactly.
