Independence day July 4th. Independence day. The day we celebrate our forefathers standing up to the king. It's got this whole romantic feel. What a great nation we are, let's all celebrate with fireworks and picnics in the park. It seems like something I would love. Independence, liberty, ideas that are central to my philosophy. But when I look closer, I see that the story isn't as glorious as we make it out to be. Basically, some people were living over here, and the king was across the ocean. It was costing a lot to have his armies protect the people over here, so he was taxing them left and right. Of course, they didn't like this at all. So they protested and complained to the king. But this was before mass media. The king couldn't do some smart marketing and keep people tame. So some rebels fought against the king's army, and eventually some people got together to formally declare independence. I see this behavior all the time. It is there when a lady is bitching at the return counter of a department store demanding they kiss her ass. Or when bratty anarchists hit the streets for a good ol' protest, filled with stomping feet and toddler cries. These are my great forefathers? Let's take a look at the declaration itself. "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." Already in the first paragraph the holes are huge. What Creator? What rights? We have no creator, and he gave us no rights. If he did, we wouldn't need to fight for them now would we. A right given by a God could never be infringed upon by another man. All men are created equal. Ya, tell that to the niggers. This country is founded by power-takers. The declaration was because the king was on the other side of the ocean, and these guys wanted power. They rebelled so they could be the ones in charge. If I am supposed to feel warm and cozy feelings about this, I don't. I see it as immature and short-sighted. We don't need a declaration of independence. We need a realization of codependence.
