Anna Bershteyn PhD dance "Lipid-coated nanoparticles as synthetic pathogens for design of vaccines" Expected in 2010: Ph.D. Materials Science and Engineering Massachusetts Institute of Technology For my graduate research, I have developed a method for making particles that are entirely synthetic, but that mimic the structures of viruses and bacteria. They are composed of a polymer core surrounded by a lipid shell. These components are biodegradable and friendly to human use. Thus, I hope to create a more versatile platform for designing vaccines against viruses and bacteria that deliver signals to the immune system in a way that mimics an infection without using any infectious components. This dance shows the formation of a lipid-coated polymer particle by emulsion of an oily solution of lipid and polymer in a bath of water. When the dancers join hands in a ring, this represents the immersion of the oily phase in the water phase, causing the lipid component to assemble at the surface of the droplet. As the oily phase evaporates away, the particle shrinks until it is a solid polymer core tightly wrapped by a lipid shell -- a "synthetic pathogen" is formed! The beginning and ending scenes represent my optimism that such an approach might lead to solutions to thus far intractable epidemics. Down Time Jaz A film about a functional family. A delightful and infectious animated dance film, Down Time Jaz is a ferris wheel ride through family life from the point of view of the second child who must save the rest of her family from itself. A delightful and infectious animated dance film, Down Time Jaz is a ferris wheel ride through family life from the point of view of the second child who must save the rest of her family from itself. Down Time Jaz is a fantastical portrait of a family of dancers, trapped inside their image of themselves as living out a public performance. They are watched anxiously through their windows until a new child arrives to break their 'routine'. She sees them as "a family of genies suffocating in a bottle", and decides to "unstop the cord and let the air in and the dance out". This frees them to flights of kinetic fantasy and adventure, but ultimately it all becomes too much. Her new task is then to find "a home, where, at the end of the day, we can all sleep happily" - thus liberating the dancers from their need to always be on display and allowing them to relax into the loving interaction of family life. Webpage: http://www.physicaltv.com.au/DownTimeJazthePhysicalTvCompanyRichardJamesAllenAndKarenPearlman_499_1079_3_0.html Director's Statement by Karen Pearlman: "Down Time Jaz is a physical-digital dance which uses real bodies and digital media to choreograph the impossible. This digitally generated liberation is led by a dancer, who, like digital technology itself, is in her infancy. Down Time Jaz may look like a whimsical fantasy animation, a bouquet of sweet things and adventures, but scratch the surface and it is also a highly political film about reclaiming 'family' as a subject from the far right. This physical family doesn't fit Australian Prime Minister John Howard's or U.S. President George W. Bush's model for family values, instead it is a creative, challenging, exuberant experience of the roller coaster ride of relationships. "For me personally, it's a fantasy of being a perfect person in a world that has room for someone to be both a mother and an artist but not have a vacuum cleaner or a marginalized practice. Making Down Time Jaz was about finding a way to bring creativity involved in having children into play with the creativity of making a short film. In it I tried to draw on the fantasies each member of the family has about themselves, and the underlying truths behind these fantasies, to weave together a dance of the family dynamic. It's a cross media work in the sense of involving three creative endeavours: dance, film and family." The Physical TV Company Statement: The Physical TV Company makes stories told by the body. Its charter, to make Dance and Physical Theatre for the Screen, makes it Australia's only purpose built company working in this area, and has lead it to develop and articulate special techniques and processes for creating a fully integrated blend of the crafts of cinema and of dance. This latest work, with its focus on dance and digital effects, offers viewers the chance to consider the impact of new technology on both forms, and a range of new possibilities for dance on the screen. Down Time Jaz is the third in the popular Physical Family series by Karen Pearlman and Richard James Allen, which includes What To Name Your Baby and Sam in a Pram. Currently in post production, the fourth in the series. List of Screenings, Broadcasts and Awards: • Down Time Jaz has screened at over twenty international film festivals and was broadcast on KMTV to over 2 million people in China. Kreamii dressed in black and phatts and does the speech and then after intro he re-appears and shuffles then disappears again, A~Tek, JoshII and Jamiie enter the house. A~Tek and JoshII see the 1st antidote and try getting it, Jamiie just watches as they battle for it (The Payback -- Brennan Heart & The Prophet) They ask Jamiie to decide the winner but Jamiie won't respond. JoshII asks "What's the problem?" (Infectious -- Mos Phat) James will do the speech, walk outside halfway down the court then shuffles. A~Tek then shuffles straight after him (Ampire -- A.S.Y.S). JoshII thinks it's a competition and jumps in straight away (In My Mind -- DJ Neo). They all stare off and jump in at the same time (The Anthem -- Zatox & Vortex). JoshII gets competitive again (Joke the Joker -- Noisecontrollers) and dances his hardest. He then invites A~Tek to do a duo with him. All shake hands and hug (Overdrive -- DJ Scott Project) Credits Roll. Sorry about the shitty quality but the digital camera ran out of batteries and we had no other batteries in the house XD. Ash - Walking Barefoot Ash - Walking Barefoot High Quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuOaNeX-4SI&fmt=18 Copyright - 2001 Infectious Records A track first played at the NME show at the London Astoria in 2000, kicks off Free All Angels in fine form. Tim voice sounds as good as ever, both subtle and delicate, as the album opens with the gentle lyric "Your beauty took my breath away". The track takes elements of "Oh Yeah", and "Lost In You" and combines it into a pure classic that has a chorus you'll be singing for weeks. Suprisingly never released as a single in the UK, yet it did get a release in Australia, the song is a regular on Ash's setlist. Lyrics: Your beauty took my breath away In awe all day Your company was so relaxing Easy going ways We saw the first signs of summer And springtime change Walking barefoot across the sand I hadn't planned to stay Yeah we've been walking barefoot All summer It'll be sad my friend To see it come to an end Why can't we just quit You are broke all summer But you still sing Don't need money when it's sunny Don't need anything Just need music sun and laughter And no currency The sun on your bare shoulders Comes for free Yeah we've been walking barefoot All summer It'll be sad my friend To see it come to an end Why can't we just quit Yeah we've been walking barefoot All summer Why can't we just design To live like this all the time Why can't we just quit Sand ran through my fingers And the land was hot Anointed by Apollo And his chariot Disarmed by your charm That night I felt it again Addictive and consuming Love's sweet pain Yeah we've been walking barefoot All summer It'll be sad my friend To see it come to an end Why can't we just quit Our days are as the wind blows us We are free You've got a quiet life out of town Of coastal ease The wind it has no pattern We take life slow And when the night has fallen Our cup overflows When the summers gone And the room is cold When your looking at the rain And it just wont go Remembering when the sun was high Up above Remembering when the days were long And we were in love Yeah we've been walking barefoot All summer It'll be sad my friend To see it come to an end Why can't we just quit Yeah we've been walking barefoot All summer Why can't we just design To live like this all the time Why can't we just quit Tags: Ask Mark Wheeler 2001 Free All Angels |

DD Smash - The Outlook For Thursday DD Smash released their debut album in 1982. Titled 'Cool Bananas' it debuted in the national chart at #1, an historic first. It remained in the chart for 24 weeks and became triple gold. The album's biggest hit was the fantastic 'Devil You Know'. In '82 the 'Top Male Vocalist' award was won by Dobbyn, 'Top Group' went to DD Smash, 'Cool Bananas' won 'Album of the Year', Ian Morris got 'Producer of the Year' for it, and the album even won 'Engineer of the Year' and 'Best Sleeve Design'. Radio with Pictures devoted a live TV special to DD Smash, which was subsequently released as the album 'Live: Deep in the Heart of Taxes'. The band monopolised the annual record awards for the second year in a row. The 'Top Male Vocalist' award was again won by Dobbyn, 'Top Group' went to DD Smash for the second year running. 'Outlook for Thursday' was 'Single of the Year', and 'Live: Deep in the Heart of Taxes' was voted 'Album of the Year'. DD Smash was 'Most Popular Band', and 'Video of the Year' went to... 'Outlook for Thursday'. Dobbyn and his band moved to Sydney to record their second studio album, and world domination seemed imminent. He finished 1983 by getting married. This time the producer was Charles Fisher. Released in 1984, 'The Optimist' was an unqualified success spawning two hit singles 'Whaling'. and 'Magic (What She Do)'. It eventually outsold its predecessor. The album's sophisticated production and eclectic repertoire were a marked contrast to the twin-guitar elementary tenor of 'Cool Bananas'. Touring continued with Dobbyn's by-now line-up of principally Australian musicians. The quirky, infectious pop songs seemed to come naturally ('Outlook for Thursday', 'Magic (What She Do)'). But the purity of a classic songwriter was always there. On stage with DD Smash, he would take time out for 'Guilty', his torch song debut. 'Whaling' is a timeless sea-shanty, written on a beer mat one lonely night and now an unofficial national anthem. A celebration of the beginning of the 1984 summer turned into mayhem - thanks to the combination of the crowd drinking all afternoon in the hot sun, and over-enthusiastic riot police. Dobbyn tried to calm things down from the stage, but the words he used were badly chosen. Dobbyn subsequently found himself charged with inciting the riot. There was no point touring to support an album called 'The Optimist'. Dobbyn laughs now, but then, after two years as the most popular musician in the country, there was a sense of betrayal. DD Smash - Whaling DD Smash was Dave Dobbyn's band after Th' Dudes. In mid-1981, Dobbyn forged his coup de grace - Dave Dobbyn's Divers. Thankfully a name change eventuated to DD Smash. A guitar-driven four piece, the band settled straight into live work. Auckland venues were at their height and work was plentiful. The fan base fattened by the week. By late '81, DD Smash signed a recording deal and immediately set about recording their debut album, with Ian Morris in the producer's chair. DD Smash released their debut album in 1982. The band toured relentlessly to a strong response and in mid-82 journeyed to Australia for an investigative trip. They worked regularly and Dobbyn continued to write. They returned to NZ in October and Dobbyn quickly recruited a brass section. A new sound fell into place. A new single was recorded in Auckland in 1983 and released shortly after. 'Outlook for Thursday' crashed into the national chart and peaked at #3, spending 23 weeks in the chart. The nation was enthralled with the new brassy DD Smash, and the quirky video which played week after week on Ready To Roll. The single achieved gold status. DD Smash - Devil You Know DD Smash was Dave Dobbyn's band after Th' Dudes. ------------------------------ Matt Harding is no Fred Astaire, but his flailing limbs have made him the darling of the Internet and brought joy to millions of fans worldwide. Fred Katayama reports from New York. Matt Harding is the It-boy of the Internet. He's no Fred Astaire. But his goofy gavotte elicits infectious joy. MATT HARDING, INTERNET DANCER, SAYING: "I dance badly around the world." Worldwide ... some 60 countries on all 7 continents. Exotic, even dangerous places. Nearly 6 million people have seen this feelgood video on youtube in just three weeks. And its New Age soundtrack ranks eighth on mazon.com's most downloaded list. It all began five years ago. Matt quit his job as a videogame designer and hopscotched around Asia. His pal suggested he shoot videos of himself dancing the same jig in town after town. MATT HARDING, INTERNET DANCER, SAYING: "It became a way of taking a momento of every place I went to that wasn't carrying a stuffed animal or putting on a T-shirt or just taking a snapshot. It was something that moved, something visual. So I just kept doing it, collected clips, put it together and put it on the Internet." Executives at the gum maker, Stride, saw it and offered to fund his trips. Flat broke, he didn't chew on it. He said yes. Armed with a bigger budget, he visited 46 countries. And this time, he got natives to boogey with him even though he only speaks English. We caught up with Matt in Central Park where he shot his New York spot. And he showed me how he did it. And like that, a stranger from the Virgin Islands joined us. Then a fan from Montana spotted Matt. MATT HARDING, INTERNET DANCER, SAYING: "Have you seen the video." WILLIAM GUYVER, STUDENT TRAVELER, SAYING: "I've seen a couple of them, yeah. It's incredible. Cool job." And Matt gets paid for it. As for his next step, it's que sera sera. MATT HARDING, INTERNET DANCER, SAYING: "I learned a lot about what I'm capable of, stepping out of the comfort zone ... Whatever happens, I can deal with it." Tags: 馬特-哈汀 Matt Harding |

Dorinda Clark Cole - Take It Back Singing before audiences and congregations since she was five years old has rightfully gained Dorinda Clark-Cole the title as "the Rose of Gospel." Her unique vocal style and unparalleled energy simply bursts at the seams. Her infectious stage performances are still creating a growing fan base everywhere she goes. As a member of the world-renowned Clark Sisters, her raspy alto contributions have always made her stand out as the noted "jazzy" one of her sisters. She is a multi-faceted singer, songwriter, evangelist, administrator and business woman within the kingdom of God. Her blossoming career is taking the world by storm. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Dorinda developed a highly regarded reputation for her churchy, jazz-influenced vocals during her tenure with the equally legendary Clark Sisters. She has long been the sister who startlingly possesses vocal similarities to her mother, Gospel legend and pioneer Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. Dorinda can spontaneously shift a song into its highest gear. Expect to see her break out into her funky, yet sanctified and now infamous "Dorinda Shuffle" when the praise goes up. Just when you think she's about to stop, she shows you just how full of life she is on Clark hits such as the old school smash "Overdose of the Holy Ghost," the '80s retro cut "Time Out," the soulful "Jesus Is the Best Thing," and the megahit "My Redeemer Liveth." Dorinda's energy and vibrant personality is prevalent in her inimitable riffs, runs, and scats. "We used to call her 'the marathon runner'," says Karen of her older sister's vocal melismas. "We used to say, 'Girl can you slow your runs down a bit?'" Nonetheless, Dorinda has consistently baffled fans, artists and peers with her matchless sonic speed, her adventurous contemporary Gospel fusions with traditional Gospel elements, her richness of style and depth in the expression she offers, and her clever singing methods. Even one of Gospel music's biggest stars, Kim Burrell counts Dorinda and her sisters as a direct vocal influence. Dorinda's self-titled solo debut on Gospo Centric Records exploded onto the scene in June 2002 and won her two Stellar Awards and a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Best Female Gospel Artist. The album featured the hit singles like the furiously intense "I'm Coming Out", the compelling "You Don't Have to Leave Here the Same," and "No Not One," Dorinda's ode to her love of hymns where she reminisced on the classic Clark Sisters' cut "I've Got An Angel" delightfully laced within the song's vamp. On her sophomore project, recorded live in Houston, Texas and aptly titled "The Rose of Gospel," Dorinda offers another set of power packed vocal arrangements and lyrical testaments to the goodness of God. The album released in 2005 featured the hits "Great is the Lord," "So Many Times," and "I've Got a Reason." Her energetic presence and the glory of God within her both shine all over this project. As her sister Twinkie has stated many times before, fans will find that Dorinda truly just "knows how to work a song." Dorinda balances her growing musical career with her national speaking and preaching engagements. She's an ordained evangelist, minister and preacher of the word of God. Her messages often show up in her music. She's done so on her hits like "I'm Coming Out" and "Say Yes." She counts her life experiences to be the fuel that drives her songwriting. "It was a devastating time," says Dorinda of the period in her life that created her testimony and inspired her biggest hit "I'm Sill Here." "It was a time when I was about to end it. I mean I was suicidal. I never ever would have thought I would experience that because I was 'so saved'! We say it all the time that God can pull you out of it and He can do anything, but when you actually get there it's like I really know He can do it." She is coordinator of the annual Singers & Musicians Conference, which takes place in September and instructs and showcases young talent in the Gospel music industry. Dorinda proudly served as an administrator and instructor at the Clark Conservatory of Music in Detroit founded by her mother, and is an administrator at the Greater Emmanuel Institutional COGIC, pastored by her brother-in-law, Supt. J. Drew Sheard. She also received an honorary doctorate from the Mt. Carmel Theological Seminary in 2004. Dorinda is currently the new celebrity spokes model for Donna Vinci, premier designer of high quality specialty women's accessories and attire. So as many can see, this woman of God's future is blessed, highly favored and so bright that you have to wear shades..
