Gaetano Donizetti - Rosmonda d'Inghilterra - "Perche non ho" (Joan Sutherland) This new double download is a special treat. Recently I found two versions of an air from Donizetti's "Rosmonda d'Inghilterra" "Ancor non guinse... Perché non ho del vento... Torna, ah! torna, o caro oggetto...", which was used as an alternative aria for Lucia opening cavatina. Now, to be totally honest, I just can't warm up to this aria as a whole: I just don't like the recitative and the cental aria. The cabaletta, on the other hand, is quite glorious. Still, I think it would be interesting for everybody to listen to this obscure aria. Now, the two versions that I'm talking about are: 1) Beverly Sills's rendition on her CD "Bellini & Donizetti Arias"; 2) a relatively early (circa 1961-1962) rendition by Joan Sutherland (this one can be found either on "Voice of the Century" or on "Tribute to Jenny Lind"). Now I'm aware that there seems to be a real battle going on between diva lovers, in particular, between Sills/Sutherland fans. I love both these wonderful singers, so I'm really not trying to find out who is the best opera singer. I just think it would be interesting to compare both renditions: the approach is quite different. Still, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so all ideas are welcome :-) . Your comments would be most valued. Hope you enjoy! P.S. Due to the sheer size of the aria, I divided each rendition into two parts: the recitative and the aria (+ cabaletta). Gioachino Rossini - Elisabetta d'Inghilterra - "Incauta, che festi!" (Jose Carreras & Valerie Masterson) As I mentioned in the last of my official uploads in the series "Tornami dir che m'ami", I wanted to post some appendixes of other interesting duets from the Rossini oeuvre, just for fun :). Here they are :)! 14) "Incauta, che festi!" for Matilde and Leicester from "Elisabetta, Regina d'Inghilterra". "Elisabetta" was one of the milestones of Rossini's career. Not only was it one of the first operas under the direction of the famous impresario Barbaja, but it was also a work that united many of the singers who would form an unofficial "Rossini troupe": his future wife, Colbran; the primo tenor Nozzari; Chizzola and Manzi, who would create many of the secondary roles in Rossini's operas; and Garcia, who would create Almaviva in one of Rossini's masterpieces. Getting back to the duet... It certainly isn't one of Rossini's most inspired creations. It basically features two contrasting sections: a musical conversation, as Leicester desperately tries to understand why Matilde, his wife, has appeared in the castle of Elizabeth, a woman who does not take kindly to being abandoned; and, finally, a quite "bouncy" moderato as the lovers lament their fate. Considering everything we have already heard, not a very inspired piece. And, yet... it really does prove the point that to make any kind of music come alive you need good singers :). Here we get a very young Jose Carreras (who seems to me one of the best interpreters of Rossini at this stage of his career) and the sweet-sounding Valerie Masterson. And boy, do they sing :)! Stefano Pavesi - Elisabetta d'Inghilterra - Duetto Stefano Pavesi Opera: Elisabetta d'Inghilterra, dramma serio in two acts, first performance 26 december 1809, Turin. Libretto: attributed to Giovanni Federico Schmidt. Duetto: Minacci, ah! parti indegno Elisabetta: Eiddwen Harrhy Enrico: Diana Montague Orchestra: Philharmonia Orchestra Conductor: David Parry There exists no complete score of the opera but it seems tha Pavesi was experimenting with very short items. The duet is written in one single movement and without a cantabile or larghetto. It's curius to note how many of Pavesi's opera were setting of subjects later composed by Rossini, Il Trionfo delle belle anticipated Rossini's Matilde di Shabran by twelwe years, Elisabetta d'Inghilterra is a setting of the same subject but not the text. His Tancredi preceded Rossini's opera by a year, while Agatina, ovvero La Virtù premiata is an earlier setting of the Cinderella story wich Rossini treated in 1817. Also Pavesi'sOdoardo e Cristina anticipates Rossini's own Eduardo e Cristina by nine years and by same text. Tags: Stefano Pavesi classical Elisabetta d'Inghilterra Giovanni Federico Schmidt |
