Downtown Fire, Oct. 10 at the Welcome Inn Fort Bragg-- Fire investigators believe a cigarette butt in a sidewalk vent caused a fire that blackened the inside of the Welcome Inn at 148 E. Redwood Ave. A caller reported smoke coming from under the building at about 4 p.m. When firefighters arrived, the smoke had increased, and was coming from the building's roof. The high wind made it difficult to see where the smoke was coming from. Mendocino Fire Department was called to assist, and the Fort Bragg Fire Department brought its aerial ladder truck to the Redwood and Franklin Street intersection. Firefighters cut their way into the attic, and had the fire out in about a half hour.
