Jelly Roll Morton & His Red Hot Peppers - The Chant Jelly Roll Morton considered himself to be the "inventor of jazz". Although this certainly is an exaggeration, he was crucial in development of early jazz. This typical composition was recorded for Hot Jazz Club America on September 15th, 1926. Jelly Roll Morton & His Red Hot Peppers - Sidewalk Blues Morton called himself "inventor of jazz". Although this certainly is an exaggeration, he was crucial in development of early jazz. The surprisingly relevant subject of this song, perfectly applying to this era full of traffic jams, was recorded for Victor (20252-A Mx 36283-3) on September 21st, 1926. Note: this is NOT the recording of this tune made for RCA (Mx 36283-2) on the same date (that take was 3 seconds shorter). Vocal effects are performed by Jelly Roll Morton himself. Jim Hession / New Orleans Joys / Jelly Roll Morton http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Jim Hession plays one of the best examples of Jelly Roll Morton's "Spanish Tinge", incorporating the Habanera rhythm to alternate with the straight traditional jazz beat. Fans of New Orleans jazz piano will notice the similarity between this early Morton piece and the later styles of the post 1940's New Orleans players from Professor Longhair to Dr. John. Jim Hession / Grandpa's Spells / Jelly Roll Morton http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Jim started playing Grandpa's Spells when he was 14 yrs. old. He first heard this on Morton's "King Of New Orleans Jazz" LP as well as "Turk Murphy and Wally Rose play Jelly Roll Morton". Both of these old LP's are well worth acquiring if you love Morton's music. The left hand percussive "smash" in section C represents "the spell" that Grandpa had. Maybe it means Grandpa fell to the floor or ????????????? This was recorded on December 11,2007 at Word of Mouth Studio in Algiers(New Orleans). The Paul Asaro Trio play Jelly Roll Morton's "Tiger Rag" http://www.paulasaro.com http://www.kcragtime.org "Tiger Rag," is a fun upbeat tune that Jelly Roll Morton claimed to have written. The guys played this number, and many more at a Kansas City Ragtime Revelry Concert on April 1st, 2007. It was great, and I WISH YOU COULD HAVE BEEN THERE! *************************************** A word or two about some of the confusion regarding the true composer of "Tiger Rag." The tune was first recorded on 17 August, 1917 by the Original Dixieland Jass Band for Aeolian-Vocalion Records. Did not sell very well, but their second recording of the tune on 25 March, 1918 for Victor Records, on the other hand, was a smash national hit. It was credited to O.D.J.B. members Nick La Rocca, Eddie Edwards, Henry Ragas, Tony Sbarbaro, and Larry Shields, along with Harry Da Costa. However, other New Orleans, Louisiana musicians claimed that the tune had been a standard in the city even before. Some others even copyrighted the same melody or close variations on it under their own names, including Ray Lopez under the title "Weary Weasel" and Johnny DeDroit under the title "Number Two Blues". A number of veterans of Papa Jack Laine's band said the tune had been known in New Orleans as "Number Two" long before the O.D.J.B. copyrighted it. In one interview, Papa Jack Laine said that the actual composer of the number was Achille Baquet. Punch Miller claimed to have originated the cornet & trombone breaks with Jack Carey, and that from Carey's characteristic growl many locals called the tune "Play Jack Carey". Jelly Roll Morton also claimed to have written the tune, basing part of it on his jazzed up version of an old French quadrille. While the exact details are unclear, it seems that at least something similar to Tiger Rag or various strains of it was played in New Orleans before the Original Dixieland Jass Band recorded it. How close these were to the O.D.J.B.'s recording is a matter of speculation. The O.D.J.B.'s record seems to have helped solidify a standard a version or head arrangement of the number. Curiously, however, one strain in the O.D.J.B. recordings (just before the famous "hold that tiger" chorus) is almost invariably left out of later recordings and performances of the number. _2007 Tags: paul asaro craig ventresco scott black ragjazzmonkey piano guitar cornet tdub1941 tom warner jelly roll trio ragtime |

It was a melodic heavy metal band from England, founded by ex-Whitesnake guitarist Sykes. Upon Sykes' firing from the most successful version of Whitesnake, the former Tygers Of Pan Tang and Thin Lizzy axe-man set out to create a similar sounding bluesy hard rock band. They released two studio albums and one live album before breaking up in 1994. The late Ray Gillen, most famous for singing for Black Sabbath and Badlands, sang for an early version of Blue Murder, and reportedly the band recorded demos with him, but no albums. Another interesting thing to note is that John Sykes was himself once in a different band also called Badlands. Bugs Henderson plays Texas Blues/Jellyroll Here Bugs is playing an old Nitzinger song and has Jamie Bassett on harp again. I like this recording especially because of Jamie's playing and also the tone of Bugs' PRS McCarty model is so sweet in this venue. Here he's got a harp player playing with him named Jamie Bassett, who played in several bands back in the day including Texas Storm with Jimmie Vaughan and Doyle Bramhall. Jim Hession plays Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker" http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Jim Hession performs a rendition of Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker" that he learned at age 16 from British jazz pianist Ron Weatherburn. Recorded at Fritzel's Jazz Pub, New Orleans French Quarter during the 2007 French Quarter Festival at the request of Austrian clarinetist Wolfgang Friedrich, who heard Jim perform the tune in Disneyland's French Quarter several years ago. The club on this particular night was standing room only, filled with musicians from across the world. This is the case many times a year as lovers of America's own music, jazz, flood into New Orleans to add Bourbon St. to their jazz credentials. Jim Hession /Shreveport Stomp /Jelly Roll Morton http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Certainly one of the most challenging of the Jelly Roll Morton repertoire is Shreveport Stomp. This was written for piano, but possibly the most famous rendition was by Morton(piano) with Omer Simeon(clarinet). Jim first played this piano solo at 15 years old for a citywide youth talent contest at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Unfortunately he came in second to a singer in a white dinner jacket crooning "I Left My Heart In San Franciso". This was recorded live at Word of Mouth Recording Studio in Algiers(New Orleans) on December 18, 2007. Tags: Jelly Roll Morton Jim Hession trad stride New Orleans |
