Ruby Keeler Dick Powell Ginger Rogers Joan Blondell 1933 This scene from the Gold Diggers of 1933 features Ruby Keeler Dick Powell Ginger Rogers and Joan Blondell, as the producer Ned Sparks plans a depression era Broadway Review. There are some excellent close ups showing how beautiful Ruby Keeler Ginger Rogers and Joan Blondell are, and how Handsome Dick Powell was. Only Dick Powell sings in this scene, but there is little on YouTube showcasing the acting abilities of these famous stars. This is a worthwhile scene for Busby Berkeley fans who have only seen the spectacular production numbers from his movies. Hardcore 1930's musical fans will pick up on the irony of the producer replacing Harry Warren and Al Dubin, who wrote virtually all of the music for Busby Berkeley misucals. One notable exception is "By A Waterfall, which was written by Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal. Taken as a group, there were fewer than a dozen men who wrote all the famous 1930's musical numbers, among them Irving Berlin and The Gershwins. George and Ira Gershwin were relative latecomers because they were so involved in Broad musical productions. Ruby Keeler in "42nd Street". 42nd Street is a 1933 musical film, set on the famous Manhattan street of that name, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The script was written by Rian James and James Seymour, from the novel by Bradford Ropes. The film was directed by Lloyd Bacon with choreography by Busby Berkeley. The songs were written by Harry Warren with lyrics by Al Dubin. The film is a fast-paced, backstage movie musical, one that changed the film musical forever and was so financially successful that it saved Warner Bros. Studios from bankruptcy. Many decades later, in 1980, it was made into a hit stage musical of the same name. The film has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. In 2006 this film ranked #13 on the American Film Institute's list of best musicals.
