Kefalonia - Ionian Islands - Greece Kefalonia, also known as Cephallenia, Cephallonia, Kefallinia, or Kefallonia (Greek: Κεφαλλονιά or Κεφαλονιά), is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece with an area of 350 sq. miles. The island is named after the mythological figure Cephalus (Ciphalis), although some believe its name literally means "an island with a head", referring to the island's shape, because the name "Ciphalis" is derived from the Greek word for "head". Kefalonia - Karavomilos lake Karavomilos is a picturesque fish village in the west part of Sami and 1 km from the harbour.The lake is home for dozens of ducks and the culmination of the geological phenomena where sea water passes under and across the island from Katavothres near Argostoli through Melissani Lake and emerges here at Karavomilos as 99% fresh water. Katavothres, is 3 kilometres outside Argosoli along the Fanari road and the name, meaning swallow holes, describes the beginning of a peculiar geological phenomenon. Sea water flows into sink holes and disappears. Back in 1963 there was an investigation by Austrian geomorphologists using purple dye in the water to find that it travelled through underground rivers, mixing with rain water and ending up in Melissani Lake 15 kilometres away. The water then rushes into the sea at the nearby village of Karavomilos, taking two weeks to make the journey across the island. The experiment was verified by using radioisotopes.
