The Big Rambler/AMC/Jeep Show, Kenosha, WI, 2007 On Saturday, July 28, 2007, four days after my leg cast came off, I was up shooting video at the Rambler/AMC/Jeep show in Kenosha, WI, the largest such show in the country. Felt real good to be back on two legs again. And before you start writing in with blood in your eyes, yes, I know the Alliance pictured isn't an '83; convertibles didn't come out till a few years later. This one was the only one at the show. Encores, Medallions, Sportwagons and Premiers weren't there at all. You owners of '83 to '88 Renault cars should be better represented at next year's show; they were as much a part of the AMC story as the Rambler and the Jeep. After returning to Athens, green out of college, I dove into an open minded art-rock scene that was the cure for all my jazz-ailments. I was in love with jazz, but the music around me was alive, vibrant, and had fewer rules. For a few years I struggled to recreate some kind of classic quintet, but the environment wasn't there... meanwhile I was getting work with noise-rock bands in art galleries, several times with random projections, and a few times with full length silent films. I attended the International Jazz Workshop in Banff, Canada, and my world changed. Studying with Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell, George Lewis, Han Bennink, and others convinced me to give up my preconceptions and WRITE MUSIC. Music for people I know, music that makes sense to me, music that has something to do with the South and this little town where I grew up. Most importantly, I met other musicians at the workshop, and suddenly knew I wasn't alone out there. Indeed, almost everyone on this project met at Banff some year or another. We released Projector in 2005, and much of that album contains music I wrote for a few silent films. I knew that my next recording would include the film, kind of a benchmark of "Hey, we can do this!" A commission to compose for Steamboat was provided in October of 2006 by some great folks down in Brunswick Georgia, and I finally had time to write. I had learned a great deal from Dave Douglas and Bill Frisell mostly about their approach to a film. I could pick and choose from their methods, and forged my own approach. I decided (this time) to write music for the WHOLE film, and record it that way, scene by scene. At this point I had plenty of material to release an album that could have been called "Selections from Steamboat Bill Jr." but what I intended was 70 minutes of music that fit together as a larger work. We debuted "Steamboat" in February 2007 in Brunswick Georgia, and then I took the score on 2 tours in Germany. Many, many things were ironed out on tour. I borrowed some money, and we recorded in 2 sessions: October 1-3 of 2007, and March 25-26 2008. I sold the guitar on the record to pay for the mixing and mastering. It was all a very close financial dance. The people involved were key to the sound! I love all the players on the record, and they give an edge to my music when it threatens to become a joke. Each one is a brilliant player, composer, band leader, and improviser in their own rite. We had all worked together wherever we could meet but it was huge to have them all down in my hometown together at once. "A stunning sonic tapestry that fits alongside Buster Keatons classic silent film Steamboat Bill, Jr. well steeped in the American jazz tradition, yet manages to defy complete classification the emphasis is always on the total band sound, melody and texture, and solid grooves It has something everyone: Its a jazz concert its a film its a chamber ensemble its a comedy its a rock band its all these things rolled into one." Now, these are the tag-lines Ive come up with, but for me it something much more. It is the most sophisticated writing that I have achieved yet. Thanks to the engineer Tom Lewis, its the best SOUNDING record Ive ever been involved with. It is a highlight of a period in my life, and it is a monument to the beautiful sounds that these musicians make when they can afford to see each other. It is part of a bigger movement that myself and my band mates are part of an aesthetic respectful of jazz tradition, but not to the point of denying where our ears come from. "Indie-rock Jazz, Creative Music, Modern Jazz" each of these labels come to mind, but I will leave it to you find the best words, and stick to the music. 1/7/8 Tornado Warning, Kenosha, WI just a clip with weather info out near Hwy 165 just outside of my neighborhood. Yes weird weather. Tornado In Kenosha Wisconsin January 7th 2008 I went out and wanted to catch me a Tornado and I was driving west on Hwy E in Kenosha when the storm front passed and had this feeling to turn around and I did and that is when I caught the Tornado on video. I was going East on Hwy E almost to Green Bay Rd. This is part one I got more of it in part 2 and other videos if you check out the other ones I have up. I just looked at the time stamp and the first video with the sirens was at 5:45pm the second one from the back was 5:50pm and the Tornado was at 5:55pm. I think this is set for Eastern time though.
