Yee-Haa! - Ketil Strand This is my own composition "Yee-Haa!", a tribute to some of my favourite country-style guitarists; Albert Lee, Brent Mason, The Hellecasters, Steve Morse (yeah, that's right..) and last, but not least, Norwegian guitar masters Lars Håvard Haugen and Øystein Sunde. It's played on my Fender Nashville B-bender Telecaster plus my Fender Jaguar Baritone Custom on the "solo duel" in the middle. Other gear used: Tech 21 Sansamp Tri-A.C. preamp pedal, plus some compressing, short delay and reverb, and a hint of tremolo on the Baritone parts. Audio recorded in Cubase SX. Enjoy! www.ketilstrand.com mp3 version: www.geocities.com/ketilstrand/lydklipp Tags: Ketil Strand rednebb Tele Telecaster B-bender Country Country-pickin' Fender Jaguar Baritone |

Toccata in D minor(J.S Bach)-Ketil Strand-AXON guitar synth This is the "Toccata" part of the great J.S.Bach organ composition "Toccata and Fugue in D minor". The Fugue part is far more intricate, so I left that out for now, but I'm hoping to make a full version later, including the Fugue. I used to play this Toccata on electric guitar over 20 years ago, but hadn't been playing it for a long time. But when my daughter heard me noodling around with the opening theme on my AXON guitar synth with the "Church Organ" preset, she suggested I should record a video for this. Thanks for the idea, Synne! I've heard many versions of this piece on electric guitar, unfortunately some of these don't treat Bach's masterpiece very well.. I wanted to do justice to the great composer and stay as true to the original as possible, this piece is marvellously written and there's no reason to change anything. Most of the guitarists I've heard playing this (including myself before), have fallen into temptation of using a lot of distortion which may sound good on the single-note parts, but makes the chords and harmonies sound muddy and undefined. With the guitar synth, all the chord and harmony details shine through. Yeah, I know this isn't exactly the best organ sound on the planet (real church organ purists should maybe stay away..), but I hope you can live with that. And I guess this also can be an interesting demo of my "Terratec Producer Axon AX100mkII Guitar to Midi Controller". It tracks quite well, but like all guitar synths you have to play VERY accurately to avoid accidental "glitches". The guitar I'm using here is a bit special; It's an old Roland (!) G505 synth controller guitar. (built for Roland by Ibanez, I think; it's quite similar to the old Ibanez "Blazer" model). It actually has a built-in hexaphonic guitar synth pickup which can be used to control Roland's old GR series analog guitar synths. But this was made before Midi became standard, and is not compatible with today's guitar synth systems, so I've mounted a new GK-3 pickup on it next to the old one. I'm also using a few effects in addition to the AXON; a Boss PS-5 Harmonizer for adding an octave down on some parts, and for the 6th down harmony on 1:58-2:13 (I'm using an expression pedal to change the pitch). And I used some T.C. Chorus, Boss RV-5 Reverb, and a capo.. All recorded in one take with Cubase (no editing; WYSIWYH..) Hope you enjoy it! www.ketilstrand.com mp3 version: www.geocities.com/ketilstrand/lydklipp Tags: Toccata J.S.Bach Ketil Strand guitar synth Terratec AXON AX100MKII Roland GK-3 G505 |

Zoo: Guilty ( Ketil Stokkan ) This video with the recreation of the studio sessions recording Ketil Stokkan's song "Guilty" is from the rockumentary "Zoo - et portrett" which was sent on Norwegian State Broadcasting (NRK) in 1979. The band Zoo, from Stokmarknes in Northern Norway, was formed in the 70's and delivered a lot of hits througout the early 80's as one of Norway's most popular bands. A reunion was made in the late 90's and they still tour around Norway now and then. Check out Sverri Dahl's very cool analog synthesizer solo in the middle of the song. Gullslåtten - Ketil Strand This piece is dedicated to my parents, and I performed it for the first time at their Golden wedding anniversary celebration in july 2008. It's inspired by the norwegian guitarist Knut Reiersrud and a special tuning he uses called "Trollstemming" ("Troll-tuning"). This is a special kind of open D tuning (from 1st to 6th string): D-A-F#(high)-D-A-D (low). The 3rd string is the highest, 1st and 4th string are the same, and 2nd and 5th string are the same. I also use a capo to raise the pitch (to G#). This gives a sound reminiscent of the norwegian "Hardanger fiddle". Reiersrud has used this tuning for many of his songs, including his famous "Tramp", which I've also played before. But for a long time I've wanted to write a piece of my own with this tuning. So I wrote this for my parents' golden wedding anniversary and suitably called it "Gull-slåtten".. ("Gull" means Gold, and "Slått" is a common name for music written for Hardanger fiddle). The guitar is a Line6 Variax 300, and I'm using the "Acoustic Martin D-28" -model. Recorded straight into mixer to Cubase, with some compressor and reverb added. www.ketilstrand.com mp3 version: www.geocities.com/ketilstrand/lydklipp Tags: Ketil Strand rednebb Line Variax Trollstemming Knut Reiersrud Norwegian Folk Hardanger Fiddle Slått |

Toccata in D minor (Bach)-Ketil Strand-Roland GR-100/G-505 electric guitar This is a follow-up to my previous Toccata version played on my Axon AX100 guitar synth. Some of the commenters on the Toccata video asked me to do a guitar version without the synth organ sound, so here it is. Instead I'm using a pretty rare device this time; the Roland GR-100 Electronic Guitar, which is a "hexaphonic fuzz" unit that is controlled from my Roland G-505 "synth controller" guitar. It creates a soft "fuzz"-type overdrive, but it's hexaphonic, so you can play any chord and hear all the notes clearly, unlike a regular fuzz/overdrive pedal. This was one of Roland's early GR series of "guitar synth" units that came out in the early 80's I think (pre-midi), but unlike the other Roland GR products this isn't really a synth, it's more like 6 fuzz pedals in one.. It's a fully analog guitar signal, but it uses the guitar's built-in hexaphonic pickup instead of the regular pickups. The GR-100 unit also has built-in Filter, Vibrato and Chorus effects, but I'm not using these here. The "hex. fuzz"is controlled from the Roland G-505 guitar's built-in controls and switches. Although the built-in hex. pickup on my Roland guitar basically is the same type as Roland's current GK pickups, it's not compatible with current guitar synths because of the different type of connectors. The Roland G-505 uses a large 24-pin connector that was discontinued years ago, but today Roland and Axon synth guitar systems uses a much more convenient 13-pin connector. So that's why I also have an additional Roland GK-3 pickup mounted on my Roland guitar. Other pedals used: Ibanez Tube King pedal with gain on "0" just to warm up the sound a bit, an Electro-Harmonix Micro POG adding both an octave up and an octave down, Exar Compressor, Boss RV-5 reverb, Boss DD-6 Dig.Delay, Boss PS-5 Super Shifter and a Palmer "The Junction" DI Box. www.ketilstrand.com mp3 version: www.geocities.com/ketilstrand/lydklipp Tags: Toccata Fugue minor Bach Ketil Strand rednebb Roland GR-100 G-505 guitar synth Micro Pog Ibanez Tube King |
