Mercedes SL65 Black @ 2008 LAAS CHECK OUT MORE SL65 AND LA AUTO SHOW COVERAGE: For every wish, there is a price. For every desire, there is a cost. And for every 2010 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series there will be an owner afraid of his car. Or at least there should be. Because the latest addition to AMG's lineup of Black Series specialty cars is as wicked as it looks. We say wicked because there's no other way to describe this car. It's menacing and imposing. It's low and it's wide. It's got vents, ducts, carbon-fiber body panels and even a rollover bar to prove its purpose. And it sounds vicious. Mildly so, at first. But like the train in Ray Bradbury's yarn, it rolls unassumingly into town, then quickly reveals its full potency. Its engine note begins with a sinister burble and ends in a vile shriek of high-velocity exhaust gas and sheer force. More important than any of this, however, is that the twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 of the SL Black Series makes 661 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. And that kind of motivation, friends, is nothing if not wicked. Tags: Mercedes SL65 Black 2008 LAAS Edmunds Inside Line |

2008 LAAS: 2010 Lexus RX 350 & RX 400h SEE MORE 2008 LAAS COVERAGE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/index.html?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* The big story about the 2010 Lexus RX 350 is that there's nothing big about it. Due to its wider track, it's slightly broader across the shoulders than the 2009 RX 350, but otherwise it has the same overall footprint. Its 107.9-inch wheelbase is only an inch longer than before, but there's still no third-row seat. RX owners, we're told, still don't want one. "Keeping the right size was something we heard a lot of, because we certainly studied whether we wanted to add a third row," Ben Mitchell, an RX product planner, told us. "The majority of RX owners prioritize space in back, room for luggage." To that end, the 2010 RX 350 has a more compact double-wishbone rear suspension, and after inspecting the cargo bay, we can attest that it intrudes less than the previous strut arrangement. The previous RX's 3.5-liter V6 carries over but makes 275 horsepower this year (an increase of 5), and last year's five-speed automatic gives way to Toyota's six-speed unit with a manual-shift mode. The RX 350 gained some weight in the redesign (same basic platform architecture but more luxury gadgets), but we're told 0-60 times won't be affected much. Electric power steering assist is new this year, but based on our recent experience with the Toyota Venza, we don't think this is a bad thing for the RX. "Owners asked for a little bit tighter response in the steering," said Mitchell, and we think we've delivered that without compromising comfort." Probably the biggest change on the 2010 Lexus RX 350 is that it no longer has a touchscreen-style navigation system. Really. You now have to use a console controller called Remote Touch. We're told you can adjust the controller's sensitivity much like a computer mouse. To ease the transition, Lexus has a couple hands-on tutorials set up in the convention center that you can play with if you go to the show. The 2010 Lexus RX 350 goes on sale in February 2009. New 2009 Nissan 370Z @ 2008 LAAS MORE ABOUT THE 370Z AND LAAS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/2009nissan370z.html Yes, there is still a sports car in the Nissan lineup that does not have all-wheel drive, launch control or a turbocharged engine. It's now called the Nissan 370Z and unlike the big bruiser of a sports car that is the GT-R, this new Z is actually smaller than its predecessor. It's an attempt to get the iconic sports car back to its roots, and from the looks of it, Nissan has done a solid job. Fully redesigned from top to bottom, the 2009 Nissan 370Z still rides on Nissan's rear-wheel-drive, front-midship (FM) platform. It's been modified to give this Z-car a shorter 100.4-inch wheelbase (down 3.9 inches) and a shorter overall length of 167.1 inches (down 2.7 inches). The 370Z is also wider at 72.6 inches (up 1.3 inches) with wider tracks front (up a half-inch) and rear (up 1.3 inches). All that shrinkage helps this Z shed a few pounds. A base-model 370Z with a manual transmission weighs in at 3,232 pounds. That's 88 pounds less than a base-model 2008 Nissan 350Z with a manual transmission. Even the heaviest 370Z still weighs just 3,314 pounds. It's not just the smaller dimensions that make the difference. The 370Z's lighter weight is also the result of its all-aluminum door panels, hood and rear hatch. Nissan says it added a long list of structural reinforcements to the 370Z as well, but the body-in-white is still lighter than before. With less weight to pull around, the larger-displacement 3.7-liter V6 engine should make for a very quick Z. Rated at 332 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, the new engine is offered with either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic. The manual gearbox features an optional rev-matching system that automatically blips the throttle for you while downshifting. The new seven-speed automatic will match revs on downshifts, too. Nissan also says that the programming of the automatic's torque converter makes it feel more like a manual while delivering shifts in a half second. Drive the 370Z in a less enthusiastic manner and it will return 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with either transmission. Suspension changes include a switch to a double-wishbone setup in front that utilizes forged aluminum arms and a lightweight antiroll bar. In back, the multilink setup remains, but Nissan says it's stiffer and lighter (although it doesn't give any details why). The standard wheels are 18-inch aluminum alloys with Yokohama Advan Sport tires sized 225/50R18 up front and 245/45R18 in back. A Sport package bumps the wheels up to 19-inch forged-aluminum Rays items with 245/40R19 and 275/35R19 Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tires. There are only two trim levels of the 370Z: base and Touring. The standard features list includes an eight-way manual driver seat, automatic climate control, push-button ignition and a four-speaker stereo with auxiliary steering wheel controls. Touring models add power-adjustable leather seats, a Bose audio system and Bluetooth connectivity. Navigation with an iPod connection and a Sport package are optional. Sales of the 2009 Nissan 370Z are expected to start in early 2009. Tags: New 2009 Nissan 370Z 2008 LAAS LA Los Angeles Auto Show Edmunds Inside Line |

New Lotus Evora @ 2008 LAAS FOR MORE LOTUS AND 2008 LAAS INFO: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/britain/2008/lotusevoradebutsnews.html#lotusevora4500jpg Lotus took the wraps off its Project Eagle at the 2008 British Auto Show. It's now called the Evora, a midengine 2+2 coupe that the company says can accommodate two big "American males in the front seats." The Malaysian-owned, British-based marque will build the new model on a new assembly line at its plant in Hethel at the rate of about 2,000 units annually. The Evora is named for a city in Portugal about 65 miles east of Lisbon. It gets a Toyota-sourced, Lotus-tuned 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 276 horsepower. The aluminum-intensive car weighs just under 3,000 pounds and is characterized by asymmetric wheel sizes, a short rear overhang and a long front overhang. Lotus claims 0-to-60-mph acceleration will take less than 5.0 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 160 mph. In the cabin, Lotus points out that it veers away from "racing-car-inspired technical minimalism." The company said the Evora "employs a softer approach that [uses] premium quality materials and finishes to create a contemporary but luxurious ambience." The cabin is trimmed in aluminum and hand-stitched leather and gets a new Alpine multimedia system with a 7-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth and iPod connectivity functions. Antilock brakes and stability and traction control are all standard. Options include a reversing camera with a removable satellite navigation element. Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus, described the Evora as "the biggest milestone Lotus has achieved since the Elise was born 13 years ago." The car should begin reaching dealers next spring, priced from around $90,000. A supercharged sibling is due in 2010. Cubism: Nissan Cube @ 2008 LAAS MORE LA AUTO SHOW STORIES: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/2009nissancube.html We've driven a 2008 Nissan Cube in right-hand-drive Japanese specification. We've also seen it as an art project in the hands of students from the Brooks and Pratt Institutes. Now at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, we're seeing the 2009 Nissan Cube, an actual production car that you'll be able to buy in the spring of 2009. The steering wheel is on the left side in this Nissan Cube, of course, and at 156.7 inches from nose to rump, it's nearly 10 inches longer than the previous-generation Cube we tested and it also rides on a 4-inch-longer wheelbase. If we were in Japan, there would probably be a third-row seat stuffed into this extra space, but for us, the extra length merely translates to more cargo room and better crashworthiness. As before, the second-row bench slides fore and aft. Fortunately, Nissan's box-shaped car hasn't grown so large that it's no longer cute: It's still more than 10 inches shorter than the Scion xB and a foot shorter than Nissan's Versa hatchback. Just as important, the 2009 Nissan Cube has the same overall shape as its iconic Japanese forbears and retains their signature styling cues. Up front, the slotted grille and lozengelike lighting elements are familiar — Nissan hopes the fascia design makes you think of a "bulldog in sunglasses." In back, you can't miss the asymmetrical swing gate and the wraparound illusion for the rear glass. Inside the cabin, the JDM Cube's front bench seat has given way to traditional bucket seats, and the cabin strikes us as more individually designed than the prepackaged setup in the Versa. Flowing curves and oblong vents help disguise an otherwise unremarkable dual-cowl dash. Look up and the wavy, circular motif continues as concentric circles ripple out from the center of the headliner. On the lengthy accessory list, you'll find "Magic Rubber Bands," which, says Nissan, are colorful rubber straps that allow you to secure maps, photos, towels and small stuffed animals to the door armrests. You see, the 2009 Nissan Cube isn't just a car for young people. It's a car for young, weird people. There shouldn't be anything weird about how this Cube drives, though. Ours will come solely with a 1.8-liter inline-4 engine rated at 122 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque — just like in the Versa. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), both driving the front wheels. Performance probably won't excite you, but the Cube should be lighter than the Versa, so it won't be slow. Suspension still consists of struts in front and a torsion beam in the rear, but with the new Cube's longer wheelbase and wider 195/60R15 tires, we're expecting better control in the ride and handling department. The steering uses electric power assist. Nissan says it will offer base, S and SL trim levels on the 2009 Nissan Cube. We don't yet know how they'll be priced, but we expect all but the base model to come with air-conditioning, power accessories and keyless entry. Safety features include full airbag coverage, antilock brakes and stability control. Among the factory options are keyless start, Bluetooth, an upgraded Rockford Fosgate stereo, satellite radio and iPod integration. Unusual for a subcompact, there's an option to add rear sonar, too. Ford Fusion Hybrid @ 2008 LAAS FOR MORE ABOUT THE FUSION AND MILAN HYBRIDS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/2010fordfusionhybrid.html With the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid presented at the Los Angeles auto show, the Dearborn-based automaker will go directly after Toyota and Honda for title of the most efficient hybrid sedan. Using an updated version of the full-hybrid system featured in the most recent Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrids, the Fusion Hybrid is expected to return an impressive 39 mpg on the EPA city test cycle. If the Fusion Hybrid (and the mechanically identical Mercury Milan Hybrid) can achieve this figure, it will represent a 5-mpg improvement over the front-wheel-drive Escape/Mariner Hybrids and a 6-mpg improvement compared to the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Honda Civic Hybrid posts 40 mpg in the EPA's city regimen. That's an impressive figure, given that the Fusion Hybrid uses the same 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine that makes up the gas-powered portion of the Escape Hybrid's powertrain. This engine incidentally makes 155 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque and is bolted to a continuously variable transmission, just as in the Escape Hybrid. But Ford is referring to the hybrid powertrain in the Fusion Hybrid as "system 2.0," copying computer company jargon. What that means is that the nickel-metal hydride battery is smaller, using 208 cells instead of 250. It's also more powerful by almost 20 percent. And, because of "improved chemistry," the battery can be run at a higher temperature and is cooled using cabin air instead of auxiliary air-conditioning or fresh air. And at 145 pounds, Ford says the Fusion Hybrid's battery is 23 percent lighter. Smarter climate controls, refined regenerative braking and a host of other upgrades are also part of the installation. According to Ford, the Fusion Hybrid can operate on purely electric power up to 47 mph, which would be a huge leap compared to the existing system, which typically fires the gas engine at about half that speed, depending on throttle application. The hybrid won't look much different from the standard Fusion, however. Ford will add its "road and leaf" logo, familiar from the Escape Hybrid. And the hybrid wears unique 16-inch wheels. Inside the cabin, Fusion Hybrid drivers get a standard 110-volt power outlet and an instrument package Ford is calling "SmartGauge with EcoGuide." The SmartGauge portion of this consists of two reconfigurable LCD screens that sandwich the analog speedometer. They can be set up to display a wide variety of information including fuel and battery levels, instant and average mileage performance, engine output power, battery output power, accessory power consumption and more. The EcoGuide portion of the name indicates that Ford believes it can coach drivers into driving the car for maximum fuel-efficiency. Part of this is the kitschy "efficiency leaves" feature, which "grows" leaves and vines on the screen as a reward for efficient driving. Kia Soul @ 2008 LAAS NEED MORE SOUL? CHECK OUT: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/index.html?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* Everything substantive you'd like to know about the 2010 Kia Soul is in our first drive. At today's official unveiling at the LA Auto Show, Kia indulged in a little self-effacing wackiness. At least a dozen Souls were in attendance, easily surpassing Ford's collection of Mustangs, lending a packed-in feel to the press conference. As Tom Loveless, vice president of Kia Motors America, spoke, his apparently college-age twins appeared on web cam, LOL-ing and OMG-ing via IM as he told us the story of the Kia Soul. We don't need to tell you much about target demographics, then. We were also touched by the metallic "SOUL" sculpture that inflated like Jiffy Pop (in the images below), as Loveless and Tom Kearns, chief of Kia's U.S. design team, closed out the conference. There's no functional need for this bit of installation art, but it reminded us of the giant Fiat 500 at this year's Geneva show. It's just fun and weird. That's all. Now for the informative stuff: The U.S.-spec 2010 Kia Soul goes into production in January 2009 and will be at dealers by early spring. Kia doesn't want to talk about pricing, yet -- other than to let you know that it will be "aggressively priced," Loveless said. We take that to mean that you'll be able to get into a decent one for about $15,000. Annual sales numbers, too, are anybody's guess, but, says Loveless, "There are two ways to look at 2009. One way is doom and gloom, oh my gosh, it's a 13-million-unit market. "But we don't think we're held by the industry. The Soul is going to change the way people think about us. And we're coming right behind that with the redesigned Spectra." Tags: Kia Soul 2008 LAAS Edmunds Inside Line LA Auto Show |

Boxster/Cayman Refreshed @ 2008 LAAS MORE PORSCHE AND 2008 LAAS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/2009porscheboxster.html The 2009 Porsche Boxster is a more substantial upgrade than its modest cosmetic changes might indicate. Like the Porsche 911 that has been thoroughly refreshed this year, this Boxster benefits from new engines, a new dual-clutch automated manual transmission and a number of smaller changes to give it another few years before a complete redesign will be required. The standard Boxster now gets a 2.9-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder with 255 horsepower, while the upgraded Boxster S gets a direct-injected 3.4-liter six with 310 hp. Although the engines only offer modest output gains over their predecessors, Porsche claims that both of the power plants represent comprehensive redesigns that also offer cleaner emissions and increased fuel-efficiency. A new dual-clutch automated manual transmission is the big news for this Boxster. Officially known as the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), the seven-speed gearbox replaces the Tiptronic automatic. Porsche says the PDK gearbox not only shifts faster than the Tiptronic, but also delivers improved fuel mileage. A Boxster S is now capable of accelerating to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds, according to Porsche. Part of the improvement comes from a launch control system that comes as part of the optional Sports Chrono package. Not much changes in the chassis department. The basic suspension layout remains unchanged, although there are now slightly wider wheels to accommodate larger brakes. For the first time, the Boxster S will offer Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) as an option. It adds a 13.8-inch carbon-ceramic rotor at each corner with a four-piston caliper painted in yellow. A mechanical limited-slip differential is also available on all models with 18- or 19-inch wheels. The interior revisions are also modest. A new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system attempts to reduce electronic complexity while increasing the number of available options. The button count has been cut in half to 16, while features like an iPod adapter and a USB port have been added. Other new options include ventilated seats and a new audio system called the Sound Package Plus. Tags: Porsche Boxster/Cayman Refreshed 2008 LAAS Los Angeles Auto Show car motor German |

2008 LAAS: 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible FOR MORE LA AUTO SHOW: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/2009infinitig37convertible.html It's all right to consider the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible the company's first real drop top. Sure, there was that M30 thing back in the early days, but it was just a regular old coupe that got shipped to ASC for a lobotomy. This G37 convertible is the real deal. It has unique bodywork, an upgraded interior and a three-piece retractable hardtop. Add to that Infiniti's new 3.7-liter V6 and this G37 drop top should have no trouble erasing the bad taste left behind by the M30. With the top in place, the G37 convertible looks almost identical to the coupe. It's somewhat of an illusion, however, as the convertible's body panels are unique from the A-pillars back. The result is a car that's actually 1.1 inches wider overall. The rear track is also 1.4 inches wider, as the rear suspension was modified slightly to make room for the folded hardtop. Overall, the G37 convertible is roughly 442 pounds heavier than the comparable coupe. Cargo capacity with the top up is actually better than the coupe at 10.3 cubic feet (versus the coupe's 7.2 cubic feet). With the top down, the space nearly disappears as the capacity drops to a little less than 2 cubic feet of space. There will be two models available — base and Sport 6MT. Both get the same 325-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 as the coupe. The base model gets a seven-speed automatic transmission as standard, while the Sport model comes with a close-ratio six-speed manual. No fuel-efficiency figures are available yet, but expect them to be slightly lower than the coupe's numbers of 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Every G37 convertible gets an extra dose of aluminum trim on the dash, doors and center console. Both the dual-zone climate control system and the optional Bose audio system have the ability to compensate for top-down driving. On the less technical side, there's also a rear-seat windscreen to reduce cabin turbulence. Sales of the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible are expected to start in the spring of 2009. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but expect to see the base model come in just under $40,000. Electric MINI E @ 2008 LAAS AN ELECTRIC MINI? READ MORE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/minie.html BMW will build 500 copies of its first all-electric vehicle, the Mini E, as part of a pilot project aimed at private and corporate customers in California, New York and New Jersey. The Mini E will be formally unveiled next month at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Mini E features a lithium-ion battery pack and a 201-horsepower electric motor driving the front wheels through a single-stage helical gearbox. BMW says the motor will produce peak torque of 162 pound-feet and will enable the car to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 8.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 95 mph, and the car can travel up to 150 miles on a single charge. BMW converted the standard Mini into a two-seater to accommodate the battery pack, which can be recharged from any standard power outlet. BMW also will provide owners with a special "wallbox" charging unit that will enable the batteries to fully charge in 2.5 hours. The Mini E is being assembled through the end of this year at the brand's factory in Oxford, England, with the driveline and batteries installed in Munich. BMW plans to put cars into the hands of 500 customers on a one-year lease with an extension option. The monthly payments cover all maintenance and other technical service. At the end of the lease, all the cars will be returned to BMW's engineering fleet for testing and evaluation. All of the pilot cars are painted metallic dark silver, with a pure silver roof. In addition, the cars all sport a serial number on their front fenders, as well as a stylized yellow logo on the roof, the charger port lid and other locations. Inside, a central gauge and battery-level indicator replace the standard tachometer. Seats are trimmed in yellow to match the car's "E" logo. 2008 LAAS: Honda FC Sport Concept SEE MORE LA AUTO SHOW STORIES: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/hondafcsport.html You might recall that Honda has been testing a fuel-cell car in the real world for quite some time now. It's called the FCX, and it's not exactly the most attractive car on the road. In fact, if you close your eyes and imagine what a fuel-cell car looks like, you'll probably imagine something much cooler-looking than the homely FCX. More recently, Honda rolled out the FCX Clarity. It's a shapelier fuel-cell sedan, but unless you're into its technology, there's still not much to love. With that in mind, Honda's recently established Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena, California, dreamed up the FC Sport. As its name implies, the FC Sport is a more extreme version of the typical fuel-cell vehicle. It's designed to not only attract attention, but also exploit the advantages of hydrogen power for improved performance. Although it uses roughly the same drivetrain components as the FCX Clarity, it strategically places them to help achieve a very low center of gravity and improved weight distribution. A custom-formed fuel-cell stack sits up front, while the battery pack resides somewhere near the middle, just ahead of the electric motor. Behind that motor sit two storage tanks for the hydrogen fuel. They're visible through tinted windows and look as if they could have been pulled off a movie prop for Star Wars. Then again, the whole vehicle has a certain otherworldly look to it. From the abrupt nose up front to the hexagonal, rocket-thruster rear end, the FC Sport is part exotic sports car, part spaceship. Details like Formula 1-style barge boards behind the front wheels and external cooling vents in back add to the effect, along with the 19-inch wheels and low-profile Pirelli P Zero tires. Honda says the white exterior color was used to convey the vehicle's environmental friendliness, while the dark windows and wheels hint at its performance personality. Those dark-tinted windows also perform another role by concealing the fact that the interior is nonexistent. Honda says the theoretical setup would be similar to a McLaren F1, with a driver in the middle and two passengers on each side. Given the size of the FC Sport, we're guessing three adults would be a tight fit no matter how they're arranged. Little Q7: 2009 Audi Q5 @ 2008 LAAS MORE LA AUTO SHOW INFO: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/index.html?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* Audi chose one of the major international auto shows as the backdrop for launching its all-new Q5 crossover vehicle. That the show happens to be in Beijing is an indication of how important the China market has become for multinational automakers, and how much it matters especially for luxury brands such as Audi. The five-passenger Q5 joins a growing list of premium crossovers crowding into China. But North America will be equally important; the vehicle is slated to make its debut in the U.S. in early 2009 as a 2009 model. Design cues reflect a strong influence from the larger Q7, albeit in a more compact package. The Q5 is 2 inches longer than a BMW X3 and 4 inches shorter than a Lexus RX 350. Eighteen-inch wheels and tires will be standard in the U.S., with options up to 20 inches. Inside, the Q5 has two rows of seats, with an optional "rear bench seat plus" that slides nearly 4 inches fore and aft to provide easier entry and exit, as well as access to the roomy rear cargo bay. Available features include DVD navigation, rearview camera, adaptive lighting, intelligent key, three-zone automatic climate control, iPod interface and Bang & Olufsen audio system. Only one powertrain combination will be offered in the States: a 3.2-liter V6 direct-injection gasoline engine with six-speed Tiptronic gearbox and all-wheel drive. New 2010 Mazda 3 @ 2008 LAAS FOR FULL LA AUTO SHOW COVERAGE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshows/losangeles/2008/lashow2010mazda3.html Already one of the best cars in its class, the fully redesigned 2010 Mazda 3 is looking to put a little distance on its competitors. It gets all the usual upgrades you would expect in a new compact sedan — more power, more room, new features — yet it remains a straightforward yet sporty compact sedan. At 180.7 inches in overall length, the 2010 Mazda 3 is about 3 inches longer than its predecessor, yet it rides on the same 103.9-inch wheelbase as before. The width is unchanged, while the height is up a couple tenths of an inch. There are only modest changes under the hood. The base model Mazda 3 i uses the same 2.0-liter inline-4 engine as before. It generates 148 horsepower and 135 pound-feet of torque and comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission. The upgraded "s" model now gets a slightly larger 2.5-liter inline-4 rated at 167 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque. It comes standard with a six-speed manual. Both engines offer an optional five-speed automatic. Mazda says excellent fuel-efficiency has been a key element in this car's development, so this Mazda 3 returns slightly better mileage than its predecessor. The specific numbers are 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway with the 2.5-liter engine and six-speed manual transmission. Add 1 mpg in the city with the automatic. The smaller 2.0-liter returns 25 mpg in the city with the manual and 24 mpg with the automatic. On the highway it's rated at 33 mpg with either transmission. There are no major changes to the suspension — just a few minor tweaks here and there to further refine the overall feel. The front lower control arms, subframe and mount bushings have all been stiffened up to improve steering response and cornering grip. In back, recalibrated shocks and wider antiroll-bar mounts are said to reduce body roll. There's also a lighter, stiffer rear suspension crossmember that improves overall handling. The minor tweaks continue in the cabin, where Mazda's engineers added longer seat cushions and slightly taller seatbacks for improved thigh and back support. Order the power seats and you'll get a handy three-position memory setting, too, a first in the segment, Mazda says. Other options include dual-zone air-conditioning, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, an iPod dock and keyless ignition. Leather, heated seats and rain-sensing wipers are also on the options list. And the most important option of all? Yes, there will be a hatchback version introduced early next year. Expect to see both the sedan and hatchback versions of the 2010 Mazda 3 on sale this spring. Tags: 2010 Mazda Protege Edmunds Inside Line auto car motor RX8 race zoom Los Angeles Show LAAS |
