Longest Most Embarrassing Hockey Goal (Maple Leafs) 3/18/2008 The Toronto Maple Leafs brushed off the shock of allowing a 178-foot goal and gave their dimming playoff hopes a boost. Pavel Kubina's third-period, power-play goal broke a tie and helped the Maple Leafs to a 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. "I'm getting a little more time on the power play," Kubina said. "Kabby (Tomas Kaberle) found me, and I just shot it." Kubina's screened slap shot from the right point got through cleanly and beat Islanders goalie Wade Dubielewicz for the Maple Leafs' third win in their past four games. The goal was on Toronto's fifth and final power play. Islander captain Bill Guerin said penalties hurt the Islanders. "We took some bad penalties again, and we're right back to where we were," Guerin said. "We have to keep looking forward." Kyle Wellwood tied the game earlier in the period, and Vesa Toskala got the win by stopping 27 shots. With a chance to clinch the game, Darcy Tucker's goal was disallowed with 4:04 left as linemate and former Islanders forward Jason Blake was called for goaltender interference. "I don't understand that call," Toronto coach Paul Maurice said. "That could have been trouble if they tied it up." Alexei Ponikarovsky scored an empty-netter with 27.7 seconds left. Rob Davison scored the only goal for the Islanders over their past two games on a bouncing shot from his own blue line that fooled Toskala. New York has lost six in a row overall, and five straight at home. Dubielewicz stopped 23 shots. The Islanders, with 177, have the fewest goals in the NHL. Only Guerin and Mike Comrie have surpassed the 20-goal mark for the team. Islanders coach Ted Nolan was fuming about his team's lack of intensity. "I don't care who is in the lineup," Nolan said. "We have to compete. We didn't have any drive. We played OK, but OK isn't getting you into the playoffs." The Islanders trail eighth place Philadelphia by 11 points, with eight games left. Dubielewicz got the start because Rick DiPietro had an MRI on his hip earlier in the day. He first injured the hip during the skills competition at the all-star game. The Islanders took the lead on one of the longest goals of the NHL season at 13:48. Killing a penalty, Davison tried to clear the puck from his goal line. The puck was bouncing all the way, and as Toskala went to glove it, it took a sharp, high bounce over his glove and ended up in the net. "It just took a bad bounce right in front of me," Toskala said. "Things like that happen. It's been close to happening a few times, for sure." The goal was Davison's first of the season and third in his career. "At the time, I wasn't worried because we were playing well," Maurice said. "I figured we'd get one back. But as we started the third period, I got a little uneasy." Toronto had the first seven shots of the second period, and nine of the first 10, but Dubielewicz was sharp. His best save came at 7:48 as he got his right pad against the left post to stop Matthew Stajan's stuff attempt on a short-handed breakaway. Toronto tied the game at 7:24 of the final period when Wellwood, in the low slot, tipped Alexander Steen's shot between Dubielewicz's legs. "It feels really good to have a multi-point night," said Wellwood, who added an assist. "I haven't had one in a long time. It must be at least 50 games or so." Islanders rookie forward Kyle Okposo, the seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft, made his NHL debut and played well. "I was a bit jittery at first, and psyched myself out," Okposo said. "I started to calm down in the second and third. I thought the game was faster than it was. It's no different than what I played. Obviously, guys are better, but hockey is hockey anywhere you go." Notes: Toronto was missing captain Mats Sundin, who missed his second straight game with a groin injury and forward Nik Antropov, who suffered a knee injury during Saturday's 6-2 loss to Buffalo. ... Colaiacovo injured his hamstring in the first period when he was hit by Sean Bergenheim. He missed the rest of the game. ... Joey MacDonald was recalled from Bridgeport to back up Dubielewicz. Flyers VS Maple Leafs, March 12/08 The Maple Leafs Came up big in this on without their Leadding goal/ point scorer, Mats Sundin. Mats Sundin Sufferd a Groin Strain in the First. He is day to day with that injury. Paval Kubina Scored his second game winning goal in these series to help the leafs come closer to the 8th seed. The leafs are 5 Point back from the 8th seed. Next up for the blue and white, March 15th against The Sabers who are also fighting for 8th. Update On Sundin(Groin Strain injury): PHILADELPHIA - Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin was injured during the first period of Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 37-year-old suffered a groin strain and is day-to-day. Sundin had eight shifts in the first period for a total of four minutes 58 seconds of ice time but didn't return for the second. He's the Maple Leafs leading scorer with 77 points (32-45) in 72 games. Game Re-Cap(NHL.COM): PHILADELPHIA (AP) -No thrilling comeback needed for Toronto and Pavel Kubina. Kubina finished Philadelphia in regulation and has the eighth seed within reach for the Maple Leafs. Kubina scored his second-straight game-winning goal to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to their second win against Philadelphia in two nights, beating the Flyers, 3-2 on Wednesday. "Hopefully it will be the start of a slide for them and the beginning of a roll for us," defenseman Ian White said. "So with a little help we'll pass them." Kubina scored the winner in overtime on Tuesday when the Leafs rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat the Flyers 4-3. This time, Kubina got Philly early in the third period. Playing without Mats Sundin for the last two periods, the Maple Leafs moved within five points of the Flyers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Maple Leafs lost Sundin in the first period with a strained groin muscle. Sundin, who leads the team with 77 points, had scored a point in nine straight games and helped lead the Maple Leafs on their current 9-3-1 streak that has them making a late postseason push. Sundin is day to day and should be able to play Saturday against Buffalo. "He's the leader of our club, there's no question, but everyone stepped up when he was out and got the job done," White said. White and Alexei Ponikarovsky also scored goals for Toronto. Vesa Toskala made 18 saves. The Flyers again wasted their home-ice advantage. While the fans haven't deserted them, the Flyers have given them little reason to cheer this season. They dropped to 16-14-6 at home and the diehards booed them off the ice in the final minute. Buffalo, Washington and Florida are also chasing Philadelphia and are in the hunt for that final playoff spot. "We're just making this group more crowded all the time," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "It's time for us to start taking care of ourselves." Jeff Carter and Mike Knuble scored for the Flyers. The Flyers bemoaned their blown shot at moving up the East standings and passing Boston and maybe the Rangers if they could have won at Toronto and earned at least a point at home. "You're going to run out of opportunities at some point," Knuble said. "We still can control where we go." Martin Biron, who made 51 saves against Toronto on Tuesday, had 28 in this one. Biron, however, was helpless to stop Kubina's power-play slapper 1:09 into the third for a 3-2 lead. Kubina also scored a goal in regulation a night earlier in the third as part of Toronto's stunning comeback. "We just have to get him out there more," coach Paul Maurice said. "It's a confidence issue and he's feeling good with that puck right now. He's getting it hard off his stick and he's played well." They carried that momentum over into this one, with White's fourth goal of the season barely 4 minutes into the game giving them a 1-0 lead. Carter tied the score 3 minutes later with his 27th goal when he beat Toskala through his legs. Ponikarovsky took a nice pass across the crease from Dominic Moore and flipped the puck past Biron for a 2-1 lead. Knuble tied the score midway through the second, using a two-man advantage to score his 26th goal. Knuble scored Philadelphia's 78th power-play goal overall and 42nd at home. Notes: NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick, in third place in the Sprint Cup standings, attended his first NHL game. He met Carter before the game and got his jersey. "I'm probably the most uneducated hockey guy in the building," Harvick said. "I wouldn't mind a fight or two along the way." ... Flyers F Joffrey Lupul returned to the lineup after missing a month with a sprained ankle. ... Toskala made his 23rd straight start. ... Flyers D Jaroslav Modry recorded his 200th career assist. ... Sundin had 16 points in his nine-game streak. Bruins VS Maple Leafs, Feb 16/2008 Boston Bruins Face Maple Leafs In the ACC. Darcy Tucker was magnificent this game having 3 points! Maple Leafs Face The Blue Jackets on Tuesday(FEB 19/08) GAME RECAP(NHL.COM): TORONTO (AP) -The Toronto Maple Leafs can only wonder how differently things might have turned out if Darcy Tucker had played this well all season. The veteran winger scored his second goal of the game 3:39 into overtime on Saturday night to give the Maple Leafs a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins. Perhaps no player better embodies the team's disappointing year than Tucker, who battled injuries early on and is just now rediscovering his scoring touch. He admits that it's often been difficult to drive to the rink. "I can't think back to a longer period of time when I struggled to produce," said Tucker, who has five goals in his past five games. "That was tough to go through ... It's great to score goals and you want to win hockey games and do it together as a group. "It's tough reading the papers every day and knowing that we have let down a lot of people in different ways. That wears on you after awhile." Tucker charged hard to the goal and tipped Alex Steen' pass by Tim Thomas. Dominic Moore and Nik Antropov also scored for Toronto. Dennis Wideman, Glen Murray and Zdeno Chara replied for the Bruins. Tucker converted a cross-crease pass from Mats Sundin at 14:18 of the final period during a 5-on-3 power play to tie it at 2. Less than 2 minutes later, Tucker fooled Thomas by skating behind the goal but leaving the puck for Antropov, who scored his 20th of the season at 16:09. The victory lifted the Leafs out of the Eastern Conference basement, but they're still nine points back of Boston for the last playoff spot. In other words, it probably won't change the way things unfold ahead of the Feb. 26 trade deadline. The Maple Leafs have four games to play before then and it's very likely that the team will look a bit different afterwards. Tucker acknowledged that it's a tough time of year as the players wait to see what happens. "When you're part of a hockey club and you have friends and people that you battle with ... it's difficult," he said. The Maple Leafs seemingly had the victory in their hands but Chara tied it with 49.8 seconds to play in regulation. Goalie Vesa Toskala tried to grab the puck during a scramble, only to watch it fall at his feet and have Chara knock it in. Boston had several good chances early and held a 9-1 advantage in shots when Murray opened the scoring at 5:48 of the first period. Bruins coach Claude Julien said the game was lost during that opening 20 minutes. "I thought in the first period we should've been able to establish a better lead than we did," he said. "We had some Grade A opportunities where we should've scored, two, three goals." Moore tied the score at 10:32. The center managed to find the puck during a scramble in front of Thomas and flipped it over the sprawled goalie. Toronto controlled much of the second period but Boston took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after 40 minutes. Wideman scored at 18:36 on a power player by floating a long wrist shot past Toskala. Notes: Toronto is 9-20 in one goal games this season ... Referee Bill McCreary was honored before working his 1,500th career NHL game ... Maple Leafs VS Sens, March 22,08 The leafs played good after they got scored 3 times. They Came Back from behinf. The team put confidence to win with great breaks, passes and team spirit. Mats Stajan played good leadding the way on behave of Nik Antropov and Mats Sundin. Kyle Wellwood, Alex Steen, Darcy Tucker, Jiri Tlusty and Matt Stajan all scored for the Maple Leafs, who gave their playoff hopes a boost with a 5-4 victory over the Ottawa. GAME RE-CAP(NHL.COM): OTTAWA (AP) -Nothing has fazed the Toronto Maple Leafs lately. Not a slew of injuries or a less-than-bright postseason outlook. Kyle Wellwood, Alex Steen, Darcy Tucker, Jiri Tlusty and Matt Stajan all scored for the Maple Leafs, who gave their playoff hopes a boost with a 5-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night. "We're showing what keeping the faith can do for a team," Steen said. "We don't quit." More impressive than the Leafs' six straight road wins, is the fact they're winning without captain Mats Sundin and Nik Antropov. The Leafs have won four straight against the Senators, and the teams will meet once more in the regular season. Toronto is 12th in the Eastern Conference and trails Philadelphia and Boston, tied at the postseason cutoff, by four points. "This was a big win for us," Stajan said. "We're battling for our lives, and with the injuries we have we're showing what kind of guys we have. We're not going to give up." Giveaways and turnovers cost the Senators, especially in the third period when the Leafs scored two goals in a span of 41 seconds to take the lead. "Breakdowns, once in a while you take advantage. When you don't, you lose hockey games," Ottawa coach Bryan Murray said. "The two goals they got is from passes to two of their guys." Daniel Alfredsson, Cory Stillman, Martin Lapointe, Dany Heatley scored for the Senators, and Martin Gerber stopped 29 shots. Fifth-place Ottawa is two points behind New Jersey, but only one ahead of the New York Rangers. Alfredsson opened the scoring 2:56 in when he caught goalie Vesa Toskala out of position. Toronto tied it on Wellwood's power-play goal 4:14 into the second and took the lead when Steen was left alone in the slot, beating Gerber low glove side at 12:39. Ottawa then scored three goals in a span of 2:27, tallying twice on the power play. Stillman tied it 2-2 when he got two chances at the side of the net. Just 58 seconds later, the Leafs were caught out of position and Lapointe was left alone to beat Toskala. Heatley made it 4-2 with his 37th goal. The Leafs salvaged the period, however, scoring with 54 seconds remaining when Tucker put in a rebound. The Leafs rode the momentum into the third and scored twice in a span of 41 seconds to regain the lead. Ottawa hadn't lost in regulation this season when leading after two periods. "It's frustrating when you get a two-goal lead and blow it," forward Jason Spezza said. "You've got to be able to hold onto a lead going into the stretch drive." Poor defensive play by the Senators allowed Tlusty to draw out Gerber and beat him on the backhand. Seconds later, a bad giveaway cost Ottawa when Stajan made it 5-4. "We know we can play better," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "If we want to win down the stretch and in the playoffs we can't give up goals like that." Ottawa had a power play in the final minutes and pressured to get the tying goal, but Heatley, who fired a shot with seconds left, hit the post just after the whistle. Ottawa lost Chris Kelly near the 7-minute mark when he injured his left foot during a scrum in front of Gerber. Notes: With his 10th consecutive start, Gerber tied his career high - set when he playing with the Carolina Hurricanes. Sens VS Maple Leafs, Feb25/08 Maple Leafs exploded in this one owning the Sens 5-0. Tucker scored twice and Mats Sundin scored the first goal. Vesa Toskala Earned his 3rd Shutout of the season. Next game for the Leafs, In Florida to face the Panthers. GAME-RECAP(NHL.COM): Toronto (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators hardly left a good impression on GM Bryan Murray going into Tuesday's NHL trade deadline. Darcy Tucker had two goals and an assist to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-0 win over the Sens at Scotiabank Place on Monday. Senators coach John Paddock called the loss "a total embarrassment." "The whole scenario didn't make any sense," he added. Defenceman Bryan McCabe said the win was not just big, but well-deserved for his Leafs. "I don't care how they played," McCabe said. "We've got a little something going here and it's nice to see. How about a little credit for the way we played?" "We seem to always be top-five in man games lost so that doesn't help us at all. It's nice to have a healthy team now going forward and this is the real Maple Leafs team." Tucker agreed. "We've got a fuller, healthier lineup, Vesa has played great for us in net and our defence has played well and given us an opportunity to win every night," Tucker said. "That's obviously the team everyone expects us to be." The Leafs scored four times in the second period, including two on the power play, to build a 5-0 lead heading into the final frame. Mats Sundin, Pavel Kubina and Dominic Moore also scored for the Leafs (27-28-9) while Matt Stajan chipped in with three assists and Tomas Kaberle had two. Vesa Toskala made 31 saves and collected his third shutout of the season and the 11th of his career. The win was the fourth in the past five games for the Leafs. Ray Emery made his fifth straight start for the Senators (36-31-6) and allowed five goals on 21 shots through two periods before giving way to Martin Gerber to start the third. Gerber had just slightly more action in the third than he did sitting on the bench as the Leafs had just six shots in the final period, but by that point all the damage had been done. The Senators had 14 shots in the final period as they tried to break Toskala's shutout bid, but with no luck. Kaberle even made a point-blank save off Mike Fisher in the dying minutes as Toskala found himself on the ground and out of position. "(The puck) was just sitting there so you have to go on your knees to try to block it," Kaberle said. Sundin scored the only goal of the first period when he was left all alone at the side of the Senators net during a power play. Sundin tipped a point shot from Kaberle off Emery and in. Tucker scored twice more with the man advantage in the second period, as the Leafs blew the game open and outshot the Senators 13-6 in the period. Tucker scored the first of his two goals at 6:28 and Kubina made it 3-0 a little more than two minutes later. After Tucker made it 4-0, Moore made a nifty little move around the Senators defence and tucked a backhand through Emery's legs for a 5-0 lead. "I don't even know where to start," said Senators defenceman Mike Commodore when asked about the team's performance. "The good thing is we play again tomorrow. We just got spanked but you can't sit here and dwell on it."
