Enrico Caruso (Acc.Ruggiero Leoncavallo) - Mattinata (1903) Enrico Caruso Sings a beautiful song named "Mattinata", composed by Ruggiero Leoncavallo and dedicated to Caruso. Recorded in 1903 for Gramophone & Typewriter Company. This record is the oldest pressing which I have in my collection. This is the Very first Original G&T Pressing from C. 1905. Aprile Millo/Zaza/Leoncavallo I include this emotional excerpt from this splendid opera to allow more people to become familiar with it and in loving tribute to the memory of the wonderful and wise Maestro Silipigni with whom I shared the honor of bringing this piece to New York once again in November of 2005. Teatro Grattacielo, a meticulous and very informed group led by the marvelous Duane Printz gathered a great cast, with the tenor, Gerard Powers featured here. This is the last act and the final section of the duet between Milios and Zaza', where Zaza' has told him she knows of his betrayal and that he is a married man with a child that she met when she visited his wife!! He unravels of course at the news and she suffers his insults which bring her closer than she wanted to the awful truth that she was only a "distraction" for him nothing more. She ultimately tells him that she didn't reveal anything of his treachery, and summoning some shread of dignity she says he must leave and never return. Having sent him away she realizes that her dream of a family of her own with a man she loved so desperately would never be. She panics. "What have I done?" and runs to the window to call him back. With her face against the window pane she sees that he is on the street where she always waved to him as he came, and that he. is. not. looking. back. He turns the corner...It is over. The scene ends in the heartbreaking sounds of a woman whose dreams and hopes are shattered and lying in pieces at her feet. Enjoy the unabashed emotion of the world of verismo and revel in this little hint of a great opera too long neglected. Columbine parries Pagliaccio's questions. He has returned too early. He has been drinking. No one was with her, save harmless Taddeo, who has become alarmed and has sought safety in the closet. From within, Taddeo expostulates with Pagliaccio. His wife is true, her pious lips would ne'er deceive her husband. The audience laughs. But now it no longer is Pagliaccio, it is Canio, who calls out threateningly, not to Columbine, but to Nedda, "His name!" "Pagliaccio! Pagliaccio!" protests Nedda, still trying to keep in the play. "No!" cries out her husband-in a passage dramatically almost as effective as "Ridi Pagliaccio!" -- "I am Pagliaccio no more! I am a man again, with anguish deep and human!" The audience thinks his intensity is wonderful acting -- all save Silvio, who shows signs of anxiety. "Thou had'st my love," concludes Canio, "but now thou hast my hate and scorn." "If you doubt me," argues Nedda, "why not let me leave you?" "And go to your lover! -- His name! Declare it!" PART I. Southern Italy, around 1865-70. Excited villagers mill about as a small theatrical road company arrives at the outskirts of a Calabrian town. Canio, head of the troupe, describes that night's offering, and when someone jokingly suggests that the hunchback Tonio is secretly enamoured of his young wife, Canio warns he will tolerate no flirting with Nedda. Canio describes the night's performance: The troubles of Pagliaccio. As Nedda steps down from the cart, Tonio offers his hand, but Canio pushes him aside and helps her down himself. The villagers suggest drinking at the tavern. Canio and Beppe accept, but Tonio stays behind. The villagers tease Canio that Tonio is planning an affair with Nedda. Canio warns everyone that while he may act the foolish husband in the play, in real life he will not tolerate other men making advances to Nedda. Shocked, a villager asks if Canio really suspects her. He says no, and sweetly kisses her on the forehead. As the church bells ring vespers, he and Beppe leave for the tavern, and Nedda is left alone.
