Bethany Lutheran Church: The celebration of Easter 2008 A look at Easter 2008 and the events leading up to Easter at Bethany Lutheran Church Ishpeming, Michigan Officiating are Rev. Northern Michigan news reporter Greg Peterson has the story. ------- Easter - and the special days and weeks of Lent before Easter - are an important at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, Michigan. During Lent - Wednesday night services nclude a drama put on by youth and adult members of the church. The service is preceded with a soup dinner. Holy Week and the three days of Easter - Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter - comprise the central worship experience of the church year. A Seder/Passover meal is held on Maundy Thursday The meal is shared with the families of young people who will receive their first Communion that night. The Maundy Thursday service includes the symbolic washing of feet like Jesus did for his disciples.. Maundy Thursday concludes the stripping of the altar. A Tenebrae Service is held on Good Friday - during which the "Passion according to St. John is read. During the service, the church becomes increasingly dark. And finally - the service ends with a single candle burning in a dark church. Saturday night - the nighty before Easter - includes the lighting of a new fire outside the church. The outdoor services include the lighting of a new pastoral candle that leads a candle light procession into the church. With Candles flickering in the dark church, services are held including readings and a renewal of Baptismal Vows. The Easter Vigil service lasts all night for some - who are awaiting the sunrise - and the Holy Easter Celebration. The Easter morning festival and celebration - the highlight of the church year. Hello I'm Carl Pellonpaa My wife, Doris, and I have been members of Bethany Lutheran Church for over 50 years because of its unique sense of family. Founded about 140 years ago, Bethany is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Come inside and meet Bethany Pastor Warren Geier --- I'm Pastor Warren Geier You will see a few glimpses of life here at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church. Founded in 1860 by Swedish immigrants, who came here to mine the area's rich iron ore deposits. Swedes and miners are still part of the mix 138 years later, but they are joined by many others - some lifelong Lutherans - and some from other faith backgrounds. Worship - of course - is central to what we do, but there is lots more going on. So enjoy the video and enjoy exploring the rest of our website. Better still come and join us when you can. Bethany Lutheran celebrates God with wonderful sounds. From a glorious choir to gifted Bells.Bethany has one of the finest organs in midwest. The pipes to the century old organ were restored a decade ago. A original church bell from the late 1800s still rings for worship services and other events. Worship services are held on Sunday mornings and Monday evening. Communion is celebrated at each service. Church finances and other business are overseen by the church council at monthly meetings. Other Bethany groups and committees include the men's ministry, evangelism and numerous other committees including Property, Christian Education, Social Ministry, Worship and Music, Stewardship and Finance. There are three women's groups - the Joy Circle, Martha Circle and Mary Circle, all are part of the Women of the ELCA. The circles gather for Bible study, engage in reaching out to homebound and nursing home bound members, and participate in the social ministry work of the church. Socializing and fun is a big part of church life: From the kidders of the grumpy old men's club to the oft lively debates of the Bible study groups that meet in the morning and evening each week. Community outreach includes food drives, pie socials to raise money for good causes and a regular community blood drive. The church also supports local charities. The nimble hands of the Bethany Lutheran quilters help spread warmth around the globe. The quilts are distributed around the planet by Lutheran World Relief. The prayer shawl group knits shawls and say a prayer for those in need of a hug from the church - the shawls are for members and non-members as a reminder of the church's presence in their lives and for "those who need a little warmth in their life." And the new Candle Carvers are preparing special candles for baptisms. Bethany is all about youth. Joint confirmation classes are held with two other churches. There are three multi-grade Sunday school classes that help the children learn important age-appropriate Bible lessons. 2008 Bethany Lutheran Church Pie Social in Ishpeming. MI A January 2008 Pie Social to repair a leaky roof at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, Michigan was a sweet success. Over 100 people turned out for the first annual pie social despite below zero temperatures. The event raised several hundred dollars that will be matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Organizers say the pie social will be repeated in future years because it's a fun and effective way to raise funds for a wide range of church projects. Longtime northern Michigan reporter Greg Peterson has the story. --- The 2008 pie social at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, Michigan was a big hit for all ages as over 100 people attended the first annual event. Of course nobody was happier than the children - who were in pie heaven. Pie ala mode was a big hit - because what goes better with pie than ice cream. It was hard to choose just what kind of pie to eat because all the usual favorites were on hand. Two long-time Bethany Lutheran Church members organized the pie social to raise money to repair a leaky roof. It was obvious from the smiles and the chatter, that one important part of the pie social - was socializing. People talked about everything from the big Packer game to below zero weather. When you slice it all up - it was one sweet event - because in this case pie dough equals dough for the repair fund. 20070805 Tinicum Christ Lutheran Church family visit Family visit to Christ Lutheran Church in Tinicum Pennsylvania The weekend of Sunday August 5th, 2007 a large contingent of the family traveled to attend services at the Tinicum Pennsylvania Christ Lutheran Church. This is one of the earliest family churches in the Fluck-Judd-Babylon et al family history. This video depicts that Christ Lutheran Church is still a country church -- and it shows the parsonage where Aunt Betty and Uncle Bill were born. The web site for the church proclaims, "Our unofficial motto is "We Meet to Eat:" between Food, Fun and Fellowship groups, covered dish suppers, Games Nite, Advent Vespers, we'll grab any chance to get together over some of the best food and conversation you'll find anywhere. Sometimes we just make time and space to rest, to gain a little peace in a busy, busy world. Friendships are made, lives are changed. "We are blessed by God with Grace, Salvation, a beautiful earth and all that we have. In response to the love that God has shown to us, we want to cheerfully help God's Kingdom here on earth by giving something back."
