Donna Summer - MacArthur Park Suite - PART 1 (1978) This was a real labour of love and took me forever, so I hope it's worth it! :-)) Obviously the full Macarthur Park Suite, at nearly 18 minutes, is far too long to post in its entirety, so instead I'm posting it in two parts. Part 2 (One Of A Kind/Heaven Knows/Macarthur Park Reprise) should follow soon, as long as I can work out how to do it! Tags: Donna Summer MacArthur Park Heaven Knows One Of A Kind Live And More |

Lovingkindness - MacArthur Park 1990 at Kelbo's Coco Bowl room. Here is one reporter view of what happened during this filming: One of my pals, who goes by Monté Vista, has been known to drink a little. Well, a lot. He and his band, Lovingkindness were pioneers in the lounge scene... starting out around 85 or '86 doing your basic lounge band from hell routine... Girl from Ipanema, Scotch and Soda, and The Quest (Impossible Dream) were some of their big faves. They did a million shows, usually on punk, sometimes on shockrock bills. (A guy in a white suit with a red carnation and an M16 carbine can really scare the hell out of your typ death rocker.) Anyhow, one night they were playing a wedding reception in a trendy tiki bar in West LA/Santa Monica. Monté had just broken up with his stormy Irish-Latina girlfriend for the 59th time and was drinkin' big. They were doing a long version of MacArthur Park (there's no other kind unless you skip some verses) and the rave-up in the middle was the money shot for the song. Monté bolted off stage as soon as the verse before the break was done and flew out the back door. The rave up took hold and built to its regular climax... at the last possible instant Monté flew in through the front door and leapt on stage, looking pale, his tie askew and his shirt unbuttoned at the neck. But he had the mic out of the stand and hit his cue by the skin of a hemi-demi-semi-quaver. Later, I found out he'd had a huge slug of Wild Turkey just before the song started and was fighting the vomit reflex through the whole 6 or 7 minute first part. He managed to get out the backdoor, puke his guts up in the parking lot and get around the building to the front (after the back door slammed closed or something) and back inside in something around a minute. MacArthur in Battle, 1944/03/13 (1944) 1) "General Douglas MacArthur, after 19 months of creeping warfare, is seen on the bridge of a plunging flagship, heading into one of the boldest moves of his South Pacific campaign. And a new type of landing operation is up for trial dependence is to be placed on surprise, rather than on pulverizing naval bombardment. Los Negros Island, in the Admiralties, is sighted, and the 5-inch guns of Uncle Sam's destroyers bark into action. Low flying bombers carefully drop their bombs, then race away. Landing barges are chugging ashore, filled with the unmounted ranks of the U.S. 1st Cavalry. Landed, they leap into the brush and proceed to exterminate Japs. Their kill runs to over 3,000, and Momote airfield is captured. Soon, we see Gen. MacArthur ashore, disdainful of snipers. He inspects the entire area, which has been so quickly captured. Then we learn one secret of this 3-star general's tremendous popularity with his men. He is sincerely grateful for their prowess at arms and he tells them so. Rabaul is doomed, and the Philippines are endangered." 2) China's Air Force Grows "'The Composite Wing' Southwest China Young Chinese aviators, under joint Yank and Chinese leadership, are visited by Generalissimo and Mme. Tribute to Ellen MacArthur - Boat To Sail Just an amazing story behind this young British champion sailor. I recently heard her interviewed by BBC radio and was so impressed I just had to make this video. She was born in a landlocked English village so did not have frequent or easy access to watersports. In spite of this, she developed an avid interest in sailing through reading books and this is the part that really blew me away...at the age of eight she started saving her school lunch money EVERYDAY to buy her first sailboat. This effort went on for FOUR YEARS when, at the age of twelve, she finally had enough to buy her first rig. Imagine the perseverance and determination it took to do that...most adults wouldn't/couldn't, let alone a kid. The rest is herstory with her greatest accomplishment to date being the world record holder for sailing solo around the world in 2005. One could almost compare that feat to climbing Mt. Everest alone. "On her return to England on February 8, 2005, it was announced that she was to be made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of that achievement, becoming, it is believed, the youngest ever recipient of this honour." MacArthur Park - Written & Sung by Jimmy Webb - Part 4 For LES "MacArthur Park" is a song written by Jimmy Webb. Originally written as part of an intended cantata rejected by The Association,it was first recorded by Richard Harris in 1968 and then covered by many other performers. One of the best known covers of the song is the Donna Summer disco 1978 hit. Maynard Ferguson performed a dynamic big band jazz version. The song is named after MacArthur Park, a park in Los Angeles, California. Its lyrics, which include the memorable line "Someone left the cake out in the rain", are more symbolic than descriptive, beginning as a poem about love, then moving into a lover's lament. Harris recording The song was first recorded by Harris on his album A Tramp Shining in 1968 and was released as a single. It was an unusual single, running for more than seven minutes, with a long, climactic orchestral break. Harris's topped the music charts in Europe and peaked at number two on the U.S. charts. Harris sings the song's final chorus at an elevated pitch with what sounds like the top of Harris's falsetto range, but the final line is sung with an echo effect abruptly apparent and in a high and clear soprano whistle register. Throughout his recording Harris can be heard using the incorrect possessive form, "MacArthur's Park". Webb has said he tried correcting Harris during re-takes, but gave up when he simply could not sing the correct words. A multi-million selling disco version of the song by Donna Summer topped the U.S. charts for three weeks in 1978. Her recording, which was included as part of the "MacArthur Park Suite" on her double album Live and More, ran to 8:40 in its full-length version. The shorter single edit of the song was Summer's first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The 17:47 long medley "MacArthur Park Suite", which incorporates the songs "One Of A Kind" and "Heaven Knows", was also issued as a 12" promo, which stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for five weeks in 1978. The song has been covered more than fifty times, including versions by The Fifth Dimension, Waylon Jennings, Frank Sinatra, Beggar's Opera, Hugo Montenegro, The Queers, The Negro Problem, Glen Campbell, Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton, Sammy Davis, Jr., Justin Hayward, The Four Tops, Stephen Adams, Vic Damone, Michael Feinstein, The Three Degrees and Liza Minnelli. Ed Ames recorded a version featuring only the middle section as "After all the loves of my life". The Four Tops recorded their version of the song, omitting the long instrumental breaks of the song, and reached #38 on the Billboard singles chart. The song was also performed by the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps in several productions in the mid-1970s. Words to Song Spring was never waiting for us, girl It ran one step ahead As we followed in the dance Between the parted pages and were pressed In love's hot, fevered iron Like a striped pair of pants MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no! I recall the yellow cotton dress Foaming like a wave On the ground around your knees The birds, like tender babies in your hands And the old men playing checkers by the trees MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no! [break] There will be another song for me For I will sing it There will be another dream for me Someone will bring it I will drink the wine while it is warm And never let you catch me looking at the sun And after all the loves of my life After all the loves of my life You'll still be the one I will take my life into my hands and I will use it I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it I will have the things that I desire And my passion flow like rivers through the sky And after all the loves of my life After all the loves of my life I'll be thinking of you And wondering why [extended break] MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no! Oh, no No, no Oh no!! General Douglas MacArthur: Duty, Honor, Country An excerpt from MacArthur's Thayer Award Acceptance Address at West Point. "Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn. Unhappily, I possess neither that eloquence of diction, that poetry of imagination, nor that brilliance of metaphor to tell you all that they mean. The unbelievers will say they are but words, but a slogan, but a flamboyant phrase. Every pedant, every demagogue, every cynic, every hypocrite, every troublemaker, and I am sorry to say, some others of an entirely different character, will try to downgrade them even to the extent of mockery and ridicule. But these are some of the things they do. They build your basic character. They mold you for your future roles as the custodians of the nation's defense. They make you strong enough to know when you are weak, and brave enough to face yourself when you are afraid. They teach you to be proud and unbending in honest failure, but humble and gentle in success; not to substitute words for actions, not to seek the path of comfort, but to face the stress and spur of difficulty and challenge; to learn to stand up in the storm but to have compassion on those who fall; to master yourself before you seek to master others; to have a heart that is clean, a goal that is high; to learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; to reach into the future yet never neglect the past; to be serious yet never to take yourself too seriously; to be modest so that you will remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength. They give you a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, a freshness of the deep springs of life, a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of an appetite for adventure over love of ease. They create in your heart the sense of wonder, the unfailing hope of what next, and the joy and inspiration of life. They teach you in this way to be an officer and a gentleman." MacArthur Park - sung by Andre Francis MacArthur Park, written by Jimmy Webb, is one of those pop classics that people either love or hate. Richard Harris famously recorded it first in 1968, but many others later, including Glen Campbell and Donna Summer. It is a poem about love, then moves into a lover's lament, remembrance and sadness as nightfall comes upon MacArthur Park. The cake is largely symbolic. I have two apologies to make. First, I fall into the same trap that Harris did and use MacArthur's Park instead of the correct MacArthur Park and second, I couldn't make the final note, so went down an octave. Otherwise ... OK! Oh ... the RH version was voted one of the worst songs ever. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_in_English_labeled_the_worst_ever. However, I don't agree!
