UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham visits Sierra Leone From 18 to 20 January 2008, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and British football legend David Beckham visited Sierra Leone to call international attention to the issue of child survival. "We can't turn a blind eye to the tens of thousands of young children who die every day in the developing world, mostly from causes that are preventable," he said. Mr. Beckham's visit preceded the 22 January launch of UNICEF's State of the World's Children 2008 report. The report details the continuum of maternal, newborn and child care needed to reduce the number of children under-five worldwide who die every year; currently more than 9 million. In Sierra Leone, under-five mortality rates are the highest in the world; some 27 per cent of the country's children die before reaching their fifth birthday. Sierra Leone also has the world's highest maternal mortality rate, estimated at 1,300 per 100,000 live births. While in the country, Mr. Beckham travelled to the town of Makeni in Northern Province, where he visited a UNICEF-supported health centre and learned about maternal and child health interventions including malaria prevention, immunization, and growth monitoring. He also visited community projects promoting hygiene and other disease-prevention efforts, as well as a therapeutic feeding centre for severely malnourished children. In Freetown, the capital, he met with children affected by HIV/AIDS. Mr. Beckham also played football with children in Makeni and, in Freetown, spontaneously joined a roadside match with young men. UNICEF - David Beckham visita la Sierra Leone http://www.unicef.it - L'ambasciatore UNICEF David Beckham è appena tornato da un viaggio in Sierra Leone, paese dove più di un quarto dei bambini muoiono prima di compiere cinque anni. Beckham ha compiuto questo viaggio con l'UNICEF per sensibilizzare l'opinione pubblica sul problema della sopravvivenza dell'infanzia. La sua visita è coincisa con il lancio del Rapporto UNICEF, che cita la Sierra Leone come lo Stato con il tasso di mortalità infantile più elevato al mondo. Prima tappa della visita di Beckham è stato un ospedale nei dintorni della città di Makeni. Lì ha parlato con Marianna Jalloh, che il giorno prima aveva dato alla luce il suo bambino. Beckham ha avuto l'onore di effettuare il primo vaccino antipolio del neonato. Lungo il tragitto, i suoi fan correvano a fianco del veicolo per scattare una foto al loro beniamino. Nonostante l'entusiasmo e il divertimento, però, questo viaggio parte da presupposti molto seri. Parla Geert Cappelaeare, Rappresentante dell'UNICEF in Sierra Leone: "La visita di Beckham è importante per due ragioni. In primo luogo, dà visibilità a un paese che è stato a lungo vittima di un conflitto armato, ma che ora ne sta uscendo e necessita di continuare ad avere tutta l'attenzione che riscuoteva durante la guerra. Inoltre, questa missione ha una grande rilevanza per i programmi di assistenza sanitaria dell'UNICEF in tutto il mondo. La sopravvivenza della prima infanzia è una delle priorità globali dell'UNICEF. Parlare della Sierra Leone significa concentrarsi sul paese che ha la più alta percentuale di bambini che non raggiungono il quinto anno di vita e la più elevata mortalità materna. La visita di Beckham darà impulso alla nostra azione per migliorare la salute di milioni di madri e bambini nel mondo." Come Beckham ha potuto constatare, una parte importante dell'intervento sta nel fornire alle donne incinte e ai bambini le zanzariere impregnate di insetticida. Altrettanto cruciale è insegnare le norme igieniche di base. Un altro fattore importante, in Sierra Leone, è il coinvolgimento delle comunità più remote, come questa "infermiera a domicilio", che porta farmaci e assistenza medica a persone che non hanno possibilità di recarsi in una struttura sanitaria. Al Centro nutrizionale terapeutico di Makeni, Beckham ha incontrato numerosi bambini vittime della malnutrizione. Qui vengono curati 25 bambini al mese, e ognuno di loro ha già alle spalle esperienze molto dure. Zainab, 2 anni, non era nemmeno in grado di camminare. In tre mesi di terapia, anche se lentamente, ha fatto grandi progressi. Foday, 5 anni, aveva ingerito una sostanza tossica che gli ha lesionato l'esofago, impedendogli di mangiare cibi solidi per diversi mesi. Beckham commenta così la sua esperienza: "La prima tappa è iniziata stamattina, sul presto. Abbiamo visitato molti villaggi e incontrato numerosi medici, ambulatori dove le donne effettuano il test per l'HIV per capire, nel caso siano incinte, se il virus potrà infettare anche il loro bambino. Poi siamo andati in un altro villaggio, ed è stato molto interessante da visitare. Era un piccolo villaggio dove solo due notti fa è nato un bambino, è stato emozionante. Siamo andati a portare i vaccini di cui avevano bisogno, e in alcuni casi ho effettuato io stesso la vaccinazione. È stato molto interessante. E ora siamo qui al Centro nutrizionale. Ci sono vari reparti a seconda dello stadio della terapia: prima, seconda, terza fase. Abbiamo visitato tutti i reparti. Il piccolo Foday [il bambino in braccio a Beckham] è ancora nella prima fase della cura, credo. Beckham sa bene quanto sia importante il lavoro di squadra.
