Lyrics and music by Ervin Drake Performed by Paul Manchin Love And Xenophobia by Ervin Drake Many years ago on vacation, I and my family visited a zoo in Scotland. It was a lovely hilly area much thought had been given to its original architecture and design. Other than that, there was nothing remarkable in the choice and display of the caged animals. We have as many species in New York City's Bronx Zoo and others around the country. But I was to learn something about the human race in its evolutionary acceptance of one negative animal trait that had never occurred to me. We came upon an area in which there were dozens of penguins, both reddish brown and blue-black. They were peaceful creatures, not unlike those featured by Anatole France in his exceptional novel, Penguin Island. They stood about like little men and women in what seemed to be conversational attitudes. I gave little thought to the fact that the brown and blue-black ratite birds gathered in groups according to color until one of the brown fellows wandered into a blue-black concentration. What happened stunned me. The majority party instantly shunted the interloper away by buffeting it with hostile breasts. And I thought: What? Fear and hatred of the stranger among animals! This lack of avian nobility has a dreadful human counterpart. In the years that followed, I pondered this shocking performance many times and realized finally that not only racism and nationalism, but homophobia stems from the same source - xenophobia! However, further examination and analysis taught me that there should be no xenonphobia on the part of heterosexuals toward homosexuals because of one fundamental truth: a truth that organized religion and most society have turned their backs on - that truth being tht almost all heterosexual men hold true love in their hearts for other men and that women are no different where other women are concerned. Warm school friendships that last a lifetime, buddies who meet regularly at the bowling alley, the golf tee, the courts (tennis and squash), the neighborhood bar thta becomes their club; all these are lasting examples of love between women or between men, whether straight or gay; yes, sexuality is certainly a driving and explosive outlet of love as we know it, but then there are those whose every genital encounter is devoid of love. Such people, heterosexual or homosexual, are unfortunately incapable of feeling and expressing what we accept as the normal human desire to receive and give love. As a straight man I have enjoyed marriages to two wonderful women in my life-span. I know gay couples, equally fortunate in enjoying the same felicitous experience. Love is the defining moment in anyone's life. To realize this fulfillment is all that should concern us and for straight and gay individuals to learn to love each other as humans is the only hope for the human race. If we cannot appreciate and accept each other when we live cheek by jowl at home, at work, at social functions - how will we ever come to accept other nations, creeds, religions, other dreams? My adult life has been spent in the composition of pop songs, such as "It Was A Very Good Year," "Good Morning Heartache," "I Believe (For Every Drop Of Rain)," (and three songs of protest: "No Restricted Signs Up In Heaven," in 1945, about the treatment of black Americans, recorded by the Golden Gate Quartet; "Iron Horse" in 1952, concerning the genocide of the Native American, recorded by Richard Hayes.) Therefore it was natural for me to express such feelings in the song medium. And, in observing the rejection of penguin by penguin and human by human, I recognized xenophobia, the fear of strangers is what led me to compose the ballad, "Who Are These Strangers?" in 2002, recorded by Michael Feinstein. That and the desire to make others, on both sides of the line, accept and even love each other. I consider this song to be my most important work. It is my legacy to an undereducated world, in the hope that when those people learn how wonderful gay artists have improved their lives down through the centuries, they will view them with the admiration, respect and affection they do no presently possess.
