Maoist Fear Forces No Frills Marriages in Eastern India. ANCHOR: The fear of Maoists in India's northeastern city of Gaya is forcing the locals to perform marriages without any ostentation. Only garlands are being exchanged in temple courtyards nowadays. STORY: Indians are used to grandiose marriage celebrations. Without any exaggeration, they invite almost the entire neighborhood on the occasion. But people in the Maoist infested region of eastern Bihar are forced to restrict the marriage celebrations to the courtyards of the temples. [Yugal Singh, Local Resident]: "We are scared that the Maoists will spoil our celebrations. They have a tendency of taking away our belongings, snatching our valuables and hurting us. They attack such huge gatherings." While the young couples are disappointed, the elderly consider it a blessing in disguise. [Raghunandan Sharma, Local Marriage Participant]: "We feel that this is a better way of celebrating and also a more economical way. But yea, the fear of Maoists is there and they do disrupt our celebrations and exert pressure on us to stop such celebrations." People are also starting to take part in mass marriages so that they stay in a group. The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of poor peasants and landless laborers, But they routinely call strikes, attack government property, and target local politicians. Their influence now stretches across large parts of rural eastern, central and southern India. Thousands of people have been killed since the Maoists began their insurgency in the late 1960s. Here's more from the east Indian city of Bihar. STORY: The Maoists stormed Jhajha railway station on the New Delhi-Howrah line in the Jamui district at around 5 a.m. They blew up the railway police station with dynamite. They also looted a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the railway police station. [Ashok Mandal, Government Railway Police]: "There were around 150 to 200. They started firing indiscriminately. People were forced to leave the junction. Three policemen, one porter and two Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) officials were killed. They looted all things belonging to the Government Railway Police (GRP)." The superintendent of police says that the investigations are on. Returned: Child Soldiers of Nepal's Maoist Army trailer For more information or to donate to the film, please visit www.NepalDocumentary.com. This is the trailer to the new documentary "Returned: Child Soldier's of Nepal's Maoist Army" This film depicts child soldiers returning home after the Maoist People's War in Nepal. The film examines why children join armed groups and explores ways to prevent future recruitment by following the lives of two girl soldiers and two boy soldiers. The children describe how they became associated with the Maoist People's Liberation Army during the 11-year civil war between the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists and the Government of Nepal. The children describe how poverty, lack of education, and gender and ethnic discrimination led them to join the Maoists. The children also express positive aspects of their association with the Maoists, such as respect from others, learning about politics, and helping their country. The children describe their feelings about being sent home by the United Nations after a peace accord was signed in November 2006. Some children express their belief that coming home is much worse than their experiences during association. They report the community discrimination and harassment they suffered back in their homes and villages. One girl describes how her family was so ashamed of her that she was forced to marry a man from a distant village who physically and sexually abused her. Other children describe how they are working with Maoist affiliated groups in the villages and awaiting their opportunity to rejoin the Maoists. This film weaves the voices of Nepal's child soldiers along with expert analysis and explanation provided by anthropologists, journalists, Maoist leaders, nongovernmental organization (NGO) workers, and members of the United Nations. The intent of the film is raise awareness about the experience of child soldiers in Nepal. The film illustrates how children become part of radical armed movements and also critiques the 'War on Terror' as it may contribute to fostering more recruitment of children into armed groups. Moreover, the film helps critique the international humanitarian movement that often focuses predominantly on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and war trauma to the exclusion of other crucial socio-cultural issues important in children's lives. The intended audience for this film includes the general public, anthropologists, humanitarian workers, international health workers, and individuals working on international child rights. Additionally, this film will resonate with a more conservative viewer who is concerned with the United States' position regarding the "War on Terror". This film searches to understand why child join armed groups and explores ways to prevent recruitment. This film also appeals to regional audiences such as those from South and East Asia. India Beefs Up Security Ahead Nepal-Maoist Elections ANCHOR: Elections are coming up for Nepal, where Maoist rebels will now be running for office. This comes after years of violence caused by the rebels. In preparation for any problems during the elections, Indian authorities are beefing up security along the Indo-Nepal border in India's northern Uttar Pradesh. STORY: The government in Nepal and Maoist rebels have set April 10 for elections. The new national assembly is expected to create a new constitution and formally declare an end to the nearly 240-year-old monarchy. According to India's Shashastra Seema Bal (SSB), security has been beefed up and precautionary steps are being taken to ensure peaceful elections in Nepal. Gopal Sharma, SSB]: "Before the elections, the border posts will be put on high alert. We would ensure that elections are carried out peacefully and there is no effect on the Indian side." Special camps are also being organized to train the security forces to cope with any violent incidents between the Maoists and government forces. The vote is the centerpiece of the 2006 peace deal with the Maoists, allowing the Maoist rebels to take part in elections. After a peace deal reached last November the elections in the Himalayan nation were earlier scheduled for Nov 22 but were postponed as the Maoists quit the interim government. That plunged Nepal into a crisis which was subsequently resolved. Tags: ntdtv nepal maoist rebels india elections |
