Mephisto I-II. (1981) - Sátáni kézfogás A jelenetben a Mephistót alakító színész (Klaus Maria Brandauer) és a teljhatalmú fasiszta Tábornagy (Rolf Hoppe) kézfogását figyeli döbbenten a harmincas évek elején a berlini színház elõkelõ közönsége. Kultúra és politika húszadik századi Fausti szerzõdése, pokoli szerepcseréje játszódik le Szabó István Klaus Mann regényébõl készült Oscar-díjas filmjében. A váratlan, kiszámíthatatlan hatásokra építõ, ördögi átváltozásokra képes színészt látszólag ünnepli a hatalom és minden fortélyát meg akarja ismerni. A hatalom azonban csak addig játssza az örökké tanulni vágyó Faust szerepét, amíg a kultúrát saját maga dicsõítésére használhatja föl. Mephisto azt hiszi, befolyásos, pedig a hatalom, miután kihasználta, megmutatja, hogy az ünnepelt színész játékszer csupán az igazi sátáni erõk kezében. Valójában a biztonságérzetében állandóan veszélyeztetett Faust, a huszadik századi nagyravágyó kisember õ, aki mindig a kedvezõ arcát mutatja a hatalomnak, föladja identitását, érzelmeit, hogy az megvédje és elismerje õt. A film a színész elmagányosodásának, eszközzé válásának lélektani folyamatát ábrázolja. A sikere csúcsán álló Mephisto fél, mikor a Tábornagy a páholyába rendeli. Szemében ott a rettegés, démoni, vastag krém-maszkja, grimaszai sem tudják eltakarni, hogy szorong, mint egy gyerek. Nem tud magával azonosulni, még a maszkban is védtelen. Tudja, hogy a hatalom szerepjátszást vár tõle, ezért, mint Mephisto démoni kacajra fakad és kiteríti vörös-fekete palástját a Tábornagy fölé. Az igazi Mephisto azonban a Tábornagy. A tenyérbemászóan puha, csupasz arcból világló metszõ kék szempár jelzi a kérlelhetetlen, nyers erõt, a mindenre kiterjedõ figyelmet. A remek színészi játék mellett a film látványvilágának minden eleme tükrözi a figurák lélektani hátterét. Brandauert a kamera mindig jól tagolt terekben ábrázolja. A gazdag, "estélyi" világnak a peremére szorítja, ahová be akar jutni. (A páholyajtóban áll meg, egy kép rámája vagy egy tükör keretezi be a fejét). A változatos kameramozgásokkal komponált analitikus közelképekben a Tábornagy arca irreálisan nagynak látszik. A kézfogás teátrális koreográfiája a magasban, nagytotálban zajlik, hangsúlyozva azt a hideg, kegyetlen monumentalitást, mely Leni Riefenstahl és mások náci filmjeit, a hitleri propagandát, a Speerbau neoklasszicizáló fasiszta építészetét jellemezték. Azét a stílusét, melyet Közép-Kelet-Európa majd minden totalitárius rezsimje örökölt. A Mephisto nagyrealista, lineáris meseszövése, klasszikus irodalmi forráson alapuló társadalom-lélektani modellszerûsége gyökeresen újat hozott Szabó István pályáján, aki a hatvanas évek elején a szubjektív, idõutazásos filmlíra egyik legnagyobb ígéreteként robbant be a világ filmmûvészetébe. Az óriási siker után Höfgen minden gondolatát és idejét a színpad köti le, és nem veszi észre, miként kötelezõdik el egyre inkább a nácik mellett. A karrierjét látszólag jótékonyan egyengetõ Tábornagy kinevezi a Porosz Állami Színház intendánsává. Felesége eltávozik Németországból, zsidó barátja eltûnik, félvér barátnõjét kiutasítják. Amikor szót emel értük, a Tábornagy durván megleckézteti. Barátai ki akarják menteni õt Németországból, de marad: megbabonázottan lépked egyre feljebb a mûvészi pálya csúcsai felé. Az életben nem Mephisto, hanem Faust, aki vakon egyezséget köt a Gonosszal. Akkor keríti elõször hatalmába a félelem, amikor a Tábornagy egy hatalmas stadionban, a nácik készülõ új színházában ráirányíttatja a reflektorokat.
