Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse The Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse ("Hornet") was a Luftwaffe heavy fighter and Schnellbomber of World War II developed from the badly flawed Me 210. Essentially a straightforward development of that type, the 210 had garnered such a bad reputation that it was renamed the Me 410 to avoid disdain. Tags: Messerschmitt Me410 Hornisse Luftwaffe WWII |

Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe (German "Swallow") was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter. It was mass-produced in World War II and saw action from late summer of 1944 in bomber/reconnaissance and fighter/interceptor roles. Officially named Schwalbe, because the swallow is one of the fastest birds known when going into a dive to capture and eat an airborne insect, German pilots nicknamed it the Turbo, while the Allies called it the Stormbird. While the Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war, shooting down an estimated 150 Allied aircraft for the loss of 100 Me 262s, it was well-known and highly influential on post-war aircraft development. Messerschmitt BF-109 battle action The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt in the early 1930s. It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. The Bf 109 was the standard fighter of the Luftwaffe for the duration of WWII, although it began to be partially replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 from 1942. The Bf 109 scored more aircraft kills in World War Two than any other aircraft. At various times it served as an air superiority fighter, an escort fighter, an interceptor, a ground-attack aircraft and a reconnaissance aircraft. The Bf 109 was produced in greater quantities than any other fighter aircraft in history, with over 31,000 units built. Although the Bf 109 had weaknesses, including a short range of early variants around 400 miles (640 km) on internal fuel as drop tanks were not standardized until the E-7 model appearing in mid-1940, and a sometimes difficult to handle narrow, outward-retracting undercarriage, it stayed competitive with Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war. Messerschmitt Bf109-G2 Black 6 Me Bf109-G2 Black 6 explored accomponied by WW2 German propoganda swing music. The Bf 109, designed by Willi Messerschmitt, is a legend alongside the British Spitfire, American P51 Mustang and the Japanese Zero. First flown in 1935, the Bf109 was obsolescent by the second half of the Second World War yet it remained the backbone of the German Air Force's day fighter force and was flown by many of her allies. In production right up to the end of hostilities, more than 33000 were built second only to the Russian 'Stormovik' as the most prolific military design. Compact, rugged, fast and heavily armed the Bf109 has the distinction of being flown by the highest-scoring fighter aces in history. The promised availability of the new Daimler-Benz engine, the DB 605A prompted design work to begin on the Bf109G series. Higher speeds were obtained but manoeuvrability and handling were adversely affected. The Bf109G series will be forever linked with the daylight bomber-killing missions in defence of the Reich. German fighter pilots found themselves facing heavily armed American B17 Fortress and B24 Liberator bombers and later long range P38 Lightning, P47 Thunderbolt and P51 Mustang fighters. Ground down by the overwhelming odds few survived the war. Tags: Luftwaffe Messerschmitt BF109-G2 WW2 Hendon RAF_Museum IWM |
