Jasraj and his wife Madhura (daughter of V. Shantaram), have a son, Sharang Dev, and a daughter, Durga Jasraj, a Bollywood actress. Music composers Jatin-Lalit are his nephews. [1] He was awarded the second highest civilian honour in India, the Padma Vibushan in 2000. His family is well known for singing in the Mewati Gharana style. His father, Pandit Motiramji, died when Jasrajji was only four, on the very same day when he was going to be appointed as the state musician in the court of Last Nizam. He was initiated into vocal music by his father Pandit Motiramji. He received training from his elder brother, Pandit Maniramji, and later Maharaja Jaywant Singhji Waghela took him under his tutelage. He was also greatly influenced by the voice of the famous ghazal singer Begum Akhtar, after whom he decided to train in singing. To supply additional means of livelihood, Maniramji took Jasraj as an accompanying tabla player. But at the age of 14, unhappy with the treatment of an accompanying artist, Jasraj left and vowed not to cut his hair until he had learned to sing. Pandit Jasraj is blessed with a rich, soul stirring and sonorous voice, traversing effortlessly across all the three and a half octaves. His vocalizing in perfect diction, clarity and extreme melodiousness. He also did an extensive research in Haveli Sangeet. Panditji's greatest contribution to Indian classical music is his conception of a unique and novel jugalbandhi, styled on the ancient system of moorchanas, between a male and a female vocalist, each singing in their respective scales and different ragas at the same time. Often, it is said that great artists fail to pass on their craft to the next generation. However, Pandit Jasraj has a large number of students and has thus ensured longevity for his genre, and has Sanjeev Abhyankar as heir apparent of the Mewati Gharana. Sadhana Sargam, one of the most famous singers of Bollywood is among his disciples. He is the recipient of many awards including Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Martand, Sangeet Kala Ratna, Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, and Dinanath Mangeshkar Award. Mrs. Kankana Banerjee (Jhanak Jhanak in a programme) Pupil of the late Ustad Amir Khan of Indore, Kankana is familiar with the Kirana gharana style of Dharwad. She was under the tutelage of Pandit Pratap Narain, elder brother of the legendary Pandit Jasraj. Under Pandit Narain, she familiarised the Mewati gharana. "But I am most comfortable in the Kirana gharana style though Mewati has an infusion of a distinct flow like one find." It is important for all learners to be familiar with more than one gharana. "Such exposure broadens their vision." But switching between classical and film music could be counter- productive. "That is the reason why I stuck to classical renditions in Ram Teri Ganga Maili." The film had Kankana singing in the background tunes composed in bhairavi and darbari raag. In Id Mubarak, a Chetan Anand film, she sang another classical tune. "But I stick to this condition as film music is not my cup of tea." Even when she lent her voice for a number in the 7th Centenary memorial album of the great Urdu poet Amir Khusro, Kankana sang a classical number. Others including Mukesh and Vani Jayaram, sang light music compositions. As a singer who sang her first notes at four, Kankana was accepted by Ustad Amir Khan as his disciple three years later. "That was a real big moment for me as training under a titan like Ustadji was a great honour for me." The fine-tuning by Pandit Pratap Narain made Kankana more confident about the world ahead. To date, she has participated in prominent Music Conferences all over India and abroad much to the admiration of music lovers. In India, Kankana's performances stretch from major cities like Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangalore, Madras, Punjab, Lucknow, to the other smaller towns like Hyderabad, Poona, Amaravati, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Vrindaban, Etawah, Kanpur, Agra, Allahabad, Banaras, Jubbalpur, Pandarpur, Vidar, Nagpur, Valsar, Jamshedpur, Gulberga, Ranchi and Indore (birth place of her Ustad Amir Khan). It was a sad twist of fate that Indore invited her to sing only as late as March, 1974 when her Ustad was no more. Today she has to her credit regular performances on a global platform, mainly in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh and many other countries. Kankana has released several independent recordings in Audio CD's, Records and Audio Cassettes . To mention a few, the famous Darbari Kanara 'Tarana' of Amir Khusrau, in HMV studio, at Bombay. It was recorded for the album "Multifaceted genius of Amir Khusrau", published on the occasion of the 7th Centenary celebration of the genius of Amir Khusrau. Kankana was subsequently guided by Pdt. Pratap Narain, of the Mewati Gharana and has now established herself as one of the leading exponents of classical music that India has ever produced.
