Rachel Ní Mhaonaigh & Aingeal Nic an Bhaird - Súil Ghorm at the "An singing pub" on the road between An Dunaibh and Trá na Rossan. The English verses below are a rough translation of the preceding Irish ones (without the rhyming). Súil ghorm, uisce fómhair Craiceann chailce, sneachta gheimhridh Folt fonn, corna shamhraidh Cumha póige, bláth an earraigh Your blue eyes, autumn water Pure white skin like winter snow Your fair hair, summer barley Scented kisses, spring flowers Ar imeall na mara a ghluais muid le chéile Is thóg muid ár nglórthai go hárd leis na spéartha Ceo maidne, séidéan gaoithe Anam saortha, sruth 's taoide Gealach iomlán, spéar na hoiche Loinnear réalta, aoibh an gháire Your smile shines through the morning mist Lifts the soul light as a feather And the moon glows in the darkest night Distant stars are yours forever Ar imeall na mara a ghluais muid le chéile Is thóg muid ár nglórthai go hárd leis na spéartha Súil ghorm, uisce fómhair Craiceann chailce, sneachta gheimhridh Folt fonn, corna shamhraidh Cumha póige, bláth an earraigh The 2-line chorus translates literally as "on the edge of the sea, we moved together and we lifted our voices high into the sky" The album is dominated by Altan's co-founder and undisputed leader, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, a virtuoso of the legendary fiddle tradition of her native County Donegal. With her quick bow, she is able to articulate each individual note, no matter how quickly it passes by, and to string them together into lines that seem to sing. And when she sings herself, her soprano has the same resonant tone and sure phrasing as her violin. Her five bandmates (who play accordion, bouzouki, second fiddle and two acoustic guitars) follow her so closely that the group seems to move and breathe as one. Rachel Ni Mhaonaigh & Aingeal Nic an Bhaird - Suil Ghorm - Abair Amhrán 134120 www.tg4.ie - En sub 8-5-07 This comes from the Altan 1997 album, Runaway Sunday, which climaxes with "Time Has Passed," Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's heart-breaking elegy for her late husband and former co-bandleader, Frankie Kennedy. He had died 3 years earlier from cancer. Súil Ghorm is the first track and seems also to refer to Frankie. She is married since to Dermot Byrne, Altan's accordionist, that we see in the clip. Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh - Amhrán Iníon A' Bhaoghailligh tg4.ie Quite a different version of the song appears on the Ceol Aduaidh album, track 3 Ó bhí mé oíche taobh istigh Fhéil' Bhride ** One night I was outside St Bridgid's Day A' faire thíos ar a Mhullach Mhór ** Looking down on Mullaghmore Agus tharlaidh an naoi díom a dtug mé gnaoi dí ** And the thing happened to me, that I gave love to her Mar bhí sí caoghmhaoil, lách, álainn óg ** Because she was lovely, friendly, beautiful, young Sí go cinnte a mhearaigh m'intinn ** It was certainly she who drove me out of my wits Agus liach na bhFiann ó, ní leigheasfadh mé ** And the doctor of the Fianna would not cure me Agus tá mo chroí istigh 'na mhíle píosaí ** And my heart is in a thousand pieces Mura bhfaighim cead síneadh lena brollach glé'il ** If I don't get to lie down with her bright bosom A chailín donn deas a chuaigh i gcontúirt ** Lovely, brown-haired girl who went into danger Orú, druid anall liom agus tabhair domh póg ** Come over here and give me a kiss Agus dá mbíodh mo mhuintir uilig i bhfeirg liom ** And if my whole family were angry with me Nár chuma liomsa a mhíle stór ** I wouldn't give a damn, my darling sweetheart A mhíle grá tá cách a rá liom ** My darling sweetheart, everyone is saying to me Gur don ghrá ort a gheobhaidh mé bás ** That I will die for love of you Agus níl lá margaidh a mbíodh sna Gearaltaigh ** And there isn't a market day that would be in the Gearalts Ná bhfaigheann cúlfathmhuinneach agus mise ag ól ** And I wouldn't get solace and me drinking Is fada 'n lá breá ó thug mé grá duit ** It's along time now since I gave love to you Agus mé 'mo pháiste bheag óg gan chéill ** And me, a small young lad without any sense 'S gura leatsa shiúlfainnse cnoic 's gleanntáinn ** And with you I would walk hills and valleys 'S go Baile 'n Teampaill dá mbíodh sé romham ** And to Ballytemple if it was in front of us Ach anois ó tá mise curtha cráite ** But now I am finished, tormented 'S gur lig mé páirt mhór de mo rún le gaoth ** And I gave the better part of my secret to the wind A Rí tá i bParrthgas ó déan domh fárus ** Oh King in Paradise, make ready for me I ngleanntáin áilne lena taobh ** In the lovely glens with you Amhrán Iníon A' Bhaoghailligh - Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (Altan) 1989 www.tg4.ie Tags: Celtic Altan Celt Irish Ireland Ceol Gaelic Gael Gaeilge Folk Eire New Age Traditional World |
