Michael Nyman - The Piano Theme (Heart Asks Pleasure First) I have always found Nyman's Theme from The Piano an enchanting melody, with a simple yet powerful feeling to it. It is familiar somehow, the melody and chords are inspired by ancient music which has been passed down from our ancestors, deep within our conciousness In this improvised interpretation I tried to bring out a more hypnotic emotion by using repetitive and flowing phrases. I hope you enjoy! visit my webpage - http://www.joolsscott.co.uk You can download my most recent 10 track piano album for $4 at http://payloadz.com/go/sip?id=467446 Michael Laurence Nyman (born March 23, 1944, London) is an English composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist and musicologist, perhaps best known for the many scores he wrote during his lengthy collaboration with the filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Nyman studied music composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1969, he provided the libretto for Harrison Birtwistle's opera, Down by the Greenwood Side and directed the short film Love Love Love before settling into music criticism, where he is generally acknowledged to have been the first to apply the term "minimalism" to music (in a 1968 article in The Spectator magazine about the English composer Cornelius Cardew). He wrote introductions for George Frideric Handel's Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 and conducted the most important interview with George Brecht in 1976. Nyman, who had studied with the noted Baroque music scholar Thurston Dart at King's College London, drew frequently on early music sources in his scores for Greenaway's films: Henry Purcell in The Draughtsman's Contract and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (which included Memorial and Miserere Paraphrase), Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber in A Zed and Two Noughts, Mozart in Drowning by Numbers, and John Dowland in Prospero's Books. Nyman's popularity increased significantly after he wrote the score to Jane Campion's award-winning 1993 film The Piano. The album became a classical music best-seller. Although Nyman's score was central to the movie, he did not receive an Academy Award nomination despite being nominated for both a British Academy Award and a Golden Globe. He has scored numerous other films, the majority of them art films from Europe. His few forays into Hollywood composing have been Gattaca, Ravenous (with musician Damon Albarn), and The End of the Affair. He wrote settings to various texts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for "Letters, Riddles, and Writs", part of Not Mozart. He has also produced a soundtrack for the silent film Man with the Movie Camera. opera Noises, Sounds & Sweet Airs (1987), for soprano, alto, tenor and instrumental ensemble, ballet La Princesse de Milan; Ariel Songs (1990) for soprano and band; MGV (Musique à Grande Vitesse) (1993) for band and orchestra; concertos for saxophone, piano (based on The Piano score), violin, harpsichord, trombone, and saxophone & cello recorded by John Harle and Julian Lloyd Webber; the opera The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (1986), based on a case-study by Oliver Sacks; and four string quartets. Phantom of the Opera (instrumental) The Phantom of the Opera (in French, Le Fantôme de l'Opéra) is a French novel by Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Some believe it to have been inspired by George du Maurier's Trilby but actually it is based on factual related incidents to the Paris Opera House which Leroux investigated initiated by stories of the opera house ghost. Initially, the novel sold very poorly and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century. Today, it is considered to be a classic of French literature, though it is overshadowed by its many subsequent adaptations. The novel was translated into English in 1911. It has since been adapted many times into film and stage productions, the most notable of which were the 1925 film depiction and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical, starring Michael Crawford as the Phantom, Steve Barton as Raoul, and Sarah Brightman as Christine, which is now the longest running Broadway show in history and the most lucrative entertainment enterprise of all time, its worldwide box office over the past 20 years out-grossing even the highest grossing film in history, Titanic. Altiero Spinelli and the European Constitution, part 1 Michael Böök, a Finish social and library activist also member of A.T.T.A.C. is talking about Altiero Spinelli, his legacy for European Political Unification. Altiero Spinelli (August 31, 1907—May 23, 1986) was an Italian citizen and advocate of European federalism; sometimes referred to as one of the "Founding Fathers of the European Union" due to his strong influence on the first few decades of post-World War II European integration. By the time of his death, he had been a Member of the European Commission for 6 years, an Member of the European Parliament for ten years and had remained prominent on the European political scene through the Crocodile Club, which he co-founded. Inspirator of the unity of Europe. In 1943 Altiero Spinelli was released after sixteen years in Fascists prisons and founded the Movimento Federalista Europeo in Milan. Since then he was a consistent and devoted champion of the cause of a united Europe. In 1966 he founded l'Istituto Affari Internazionali in Rome and in 1970 he joined the European Commission. In 1976 Spinelli was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies and then in the Italian delegation to the European Parliament. In 1984 the European Parliament (after the first direct elections in 1979) approved the Draft Treaty, which designed a federal reform of the Community, promoted by the Crocodile Club, a group of MEPs founded by Spinelli. The European Council met in the next year in Milan and decided to convene the Intergovernmental Conference that drafted the Single European Act, less ambitious than the Draft Treaty. In the following years the Single European Act relaunched the Community on a path which led to the Euro and to a further strengthening of the Parliament's powers. Antonio Davis MIX by LONGER http://rs53l3.rapidshare.com/cgi-bin/upload.cgi?rsuploadid=139448883070372007 Antonio Lee Davis (born October 31, 1968, in Oakland, California) is a retired American National Basketball Association (NBA) player. Davis is also the former president of the NBA Players Association (NBPA). Davis played college basketball at UTEP under coach Don Haskins from 1986 to 1990. He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers that year (second round, 45th overall pick), but went to play for teams in Europe for Greek giant Panathinaikos (1990-92) and Italy's Philips Milano (1992-93). In 1993 Davis returned and signed with the Pacers as a free agent. Antonio was part of the "Davis Brothers" tandem of Power Forwards on the Pacers alongside Dale Davis. Despite being the 6th man, Antonio was paid starter money and provided much scoring and rebounding off the bench, much to the popularity of the fans and coaches. During the off-season in 1999, Davis was traded to the Toronto Raptors on draft day for the 5th pick, which the Pacers used on Jonathan Bender. In the 2000-01 season Davis was elected to the NBA All-Star Team for the first and only time in his career. During the 2003-04 season he was traded to the Chicago Bulls, where he fit in well as a veteran influence on a young team. Just before the start of training camp of the 2005-06 season Davis was traded along with Eddy Curry to the New York Knicks, for Michael Sweetney, Tim Thomas and Jermaine Jackson. On January 18, 2006, Davis was ejected from a Knicks-Bulls game for going into the stands and confronting a fan he alleges was intoxicated and abusive. He said he was concerned about his wife, whom he thought he had seen falling back and being touched by the fan. His wife claims that the fan was using inappropriate language around the Davises' child, and had asked him to stop, prompting harassment from the fan. Though public opinion allegedly swung in Davis' favor, the NBA suspended him for five games on January 19. The fan in question, Michael Axelrod--son of David Axelrod, 2008 campaign manager for Barack Obama--has stated that he was attacked by Davis' wife, and his lawyer revealed plans to sue for roughly a million dollars and a public apology by the Davises. Mr. Davis responded by stating, "I'm not apologizing to anybody for anything." On January 23 Davis and Axelrod settled their disputes outside of court issuing the following joint statement. "It's clear that the episode at the United Center last week, and its aftermath, evolved from some misunderstandings. This has produced regrets from all parties involved. Common sense strongly suggests that we collectively put this episode behind us and move on. That's what the Davis' and Michael Axelrod plan to do, and we hope everyone else will, as well."[1] He played for the US national team in the 2002 FIBA World Championship.[2] Davis was elected as president of the Players' Association at the union's annual convention on June 28, 2005. On February 3, 2006, the Toronto Raptors traded Jalen Rose, a first round draft pick (from the Denver Nuggets), and an undisclosed sum of cash (believed to be around $3 million) to the New York Knicks for Antonio Davis. Davis went on to start eight games for the Raptors before missing the next twelve with an ailing back injury. On March 23, 2006, Davis was released by the Raptors after his injury was diagnosed by doctors as season ending.
