Polar Star MSX Polar Star was release for the MSX by Microcabin in 1984. Microcabin gained fame with games like Xak, Illusion City, Urusei Yatsura and (Super) Daisenryaku but this early shooter is largely unknown. The object of the game is to destroy an enormous fortress that appears over the horizon. You must however cross a certain distance to reach the fortress, once you have done that your primary weapon will start loading and in the meantime you can not fire a single shot. In this clip only level one is played. But in later levels of course the distances become longer and the enemies more numerous and cunning. This is a nice and fun shooter to play in my opinion. I especially like it when the fortress appears on the horizon. (c) Microcabin 1984 Tags: Microcabin MSX Polar Star 1984 Fortress Saigokun computer game video shooter |

MSX - Xak II (1990), intro In this gem of an RPG Micro Cabin puts the player into the shoes of Latok for the second time to slay some demons. Micro Cabin eventually made three Xak games and a spin-off named Fray (of which the story plays in between part 2 and three of Xak). I edited the video, put a little more speed into it to spare you the painstakingly slow pace in which the story gets typed onto the screen - something games from that age are notorious for. MSX - Music from Illusion City, part 1 Part 1 of the soundtrack from Micro Cabin's Illusion City, an obscure futuristic RPG game from 1991 that appeared for the MSX Turbo-R and PC-88/98. As much as I admire most of the music in MSX games from Micro Cabin, I absolutely adore this soundtrack. Perhaps to put the game in a proper context, imagine a Snatcher crossover with the setting of Ghost In The Shell, with a touch of classic fantasy RPG and a lot of traditional asian influences. I only got a start at playing a (partly) translated version of this game, but I would love to put a walkthrough of it online. For now, enjoy the music. http://www.mobygames.com/game/msx/illusion-city-genei-toshi Download the soundtrack (33 mp3 (192kbs) tracks) here: http://files.filefront.com/Music+from+Illusion+City/;11077264;/fileinfo.html The original music was composed by Tadahiro Nitta, Yukiharu Urita and Yasufumi Fukuda. Nitta also did the music for Micro Cabin's Xak series. The game makes use of MSX-Music (FM-Pac), the Yamaha YM2413 OPLL sound chip, originally sold separately or build-in in various models of the MSX2+ and MSX Turbo-R computers. MSX - Music from Final Fantasy, part 1 Part 1 of the music from Final Fantasy, the MSX version of Square's RPG. Micro Cabin was tasked with porting it to the MSX and despite the system's many quirks it did have the advantage of having a sound chip available that was better than that of the Famicom (NES), the system of the original game. I am not entirely sure what else was changed, but compared to the official soundtrack of the remade version of Final Fantasy (Final Fantasy Origins), there appear to be more tracks than I could gather for the MSX version. Is the MSX version of the game perhaps shorter? http://tinyurl.com/6h7arr The original music was composed by Square's Nobuo Uematsu and rearranged for the MSX-Music/FMPac sound chip by Micro Cabin's Tadahiro Nitta. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobuo_Uematsu I have never played this game. Xak - Dragon Spirit No, this is not Dragon Spirit but it sure looks like it, right? Well, I finally finished Xak and it's an okay adventure RPG. It's not the best RPG around but worth a play through. The leveling mechanism still bores the hell out of me, but considering its vintage I'll let it pass. One gripe I had about the game are items that replenished your health. You can't use them during boss fights, so what's the point of buying bread or dried meat? They're absolutely worthless when you can stand in a spot and wait for the auto regain to kick in. Of course during normal battles, food can keep you alive to a point, but really if you near death in a fight, your just dead. Go back to your save point. Soundtrack was awesome and the visuals were good. I could tell Micro Cabin put alot of effort into graphics including the sprite animations. They tried to make the scenery realistic by adding depth perception, but that feature caused walls and trees to block your view. For example, when your in a dungoen and you walk underneath a door you have to be caution of enemies because some times you accidently walk into them. I often died alot walking into enemies I couldn't see. It's a difficult game and saving often is a total must, but nothing was tougher than this battle with the Salamander (shown in this video). Lets me say the final boss, Badu, is a cake walk compared to this thing. Badu's attacks follows a predictable pattern and his vulnerable spot is very open to attack. Salamander, on the other hand, his attack pattern (i bet) is random and it has one measly vulnerable spot, it's eye. Hit detection stinks so your aim needs to be spot on. Your attacks to Salamander's head won't mean a thing, unless you hit him directly in the eye. It moves very fast and your bullets are slow to catch up, so your best bet is to let loose a barrage of bullets when it appears and pray they land a clean hit. I mean, it's cool the game changes gears from a dungeon crawler to a shmup, but the fun and excitement stops with the Salamander. Tags: サーク MSX WOOMB Microcabin Xak |

On top of the standard 3-channel PSG sound of the MSX, this chip adds either 9 FM channels or 6 FM channels and 5 (simultaneous) drum sounds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSX#MSX-Music High quality version: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Cdo-WKq1aSA&fmt=18 Part 1: http://youtube.com/watch?v=l7Ec6UbzNqg Part 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mLhrVioTC4o Part 3: http://youtube.com/watch?v=hQw7MA8ogeA Part 4: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PzmkMrzr7go Part 5: http://youtube.com/watch?v=fFyje2308vI Part 7: http://youtube.com/watch?v=iOzm1zDD7jY Part 8: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PPKRKhmkstM Playlist: 22 VIP Room 23 Shop 24 Captive 25 Lovers 26 Water Pipe 27 Cavern (Labyrinth) Tags: MSX Illusion City Micro Cabin Microcabin music video game soundtrack Tadahiro Nitta Yukiharu Urita Yasufumi Fukuda RPG Genei Toshi |
