Military-Historical festival ANCHOR: The Middles Ages were brought back to life over the weekend. NTD's Saint Petersburg team takes us back in time. STORY: A small forest meadow not far from Saint Petersburg turned into a military camp from the Middle Ages. More than 100 people from different historical clubs gathered here to show off their costumes, equipment and martial arts. Men competed in marksmanship, and women donned their elaborate dresses. We caught up with one of the costume designers. [Miroslava ______, Historian]: female Russian: "The costume itself is very symbolic. Temple rings they are not only for decoration, but also to show tribal accessories. These temple rings are typical for Slavs in Novgorod city." Making these costumes from scratch isn't easy. It involves studying ancient paintings, frescoes and books on the life of Slavs in the Middle Ages. [Miroslava _______, Historian]: female Russian: "Typically, in the Middle Ages each family made clothes for the whole family by themselves. Every woman, even the very noble, beginning from princess and ending with country girl did needlework. They embroidered, sewed, cut and weaved." Slavs used special costumes for a fight. Such clothing wasn't only difficult to make, but wear. This chain armor is made of the six thousand metal rings and weighs 12 kg. But it does a great job protecting warriors from swords and spears. Some of the costumes have a dark history. For example monks robes. [Eugene Apanasevitch, Belorussia, Russia]: male Russian: "We are representing the order of the 'Good Death'. Because the medicine at that time was very undeveloped, this order finished wounded." This is the tenth year the festival was held and is the last military-historical festival in this season. Night time demonstration outside the BBC in protest of the bombing of Palestine / Gaza by Israel Night time demonstration outside the BBC in protest of the bombing of Palestine. We live in hope that the fighting will stop and a peace deal will be worked out. This from the BBC: Israel has agreed "on the principles" of a Franco-Egyptian truce proposal, raising hopes of an end to its conflict with Palestinian militants in Gaza. "The challenge now is to get the details to match the principles," Israeli spokesman Mark Regev said while Hamas detected "positive signs". Israel has resumed its bombardment of Gaza in a 12-day offensive which is said to have claimed nearly 700 lives. The UN Security Council seems deadlocked over the crisis. Arab countries want the Council to vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire while Britain, France and the US are pushing for a weaker statement welcoming the Franco-Egyptian initiative. The US could well veto any vote as it is a permanent member of the Security Council, the BBC's Laura Trevelyan reports. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the US supported the Franco-Egyptian initiative and that she had spoken to Arab ministers and the Israelis about moving forward on it. She added that the US did not want a ceasefire that would return Israel and the Palestinians to the "status quo" preceding the conflict. Palestinian health officials say at least 683 Palestinians have been killed and more than 3,085 injured since Israel began its offensive 12 days ago, according to the UN's humanitarian agency. Smuggling Israel and Hamas have been under pressure to accept a diplomatic solution to the conflict, which began on 27 December. Israel wants to stop rocket attacks on southern Israel and to stop Hamas smuggling weapons into Gaza via Egypt, while Hamas says any ceasefire deal must include an end to Israel's blockade of Gaza. GAZA CRISIS BACKGROUND Smoke rises over Gaza (06/01/2009) Profile: Gaza Strip Who are Hamas? In pictures: Tunnel smugglers Middle East conflict: History in maps Israel said it was not sure how long the diplomatic process would take and that a working arms embargo on Hamas was needed. BBC world affairs correspondent Paul Reynolds says Israel has always said that it will accept an outcome under which rockets and smuggling are stopped - but there is a potentially long gap between accepting principles and applying practice. Security sources have confirmed senior Israeli defence official Amos Gilad will travel to Cairo on Thursday to discuss ceasefire options. Rice: The US supports the Franco-Egyptian initiative Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas is expected in Cairo a day later for talks. In a statement on Wednesday, France's President Nicolas Sarkozy welcomed "the acceptance by Israel and the Palestinian Authority" of the Franco-Egyptian ceasefire plan. The statement did not mention Hamas. Tony Blair, Middle East envoy for the Quartet of the UN, US, Russia and EU, told the BBC he was hopeful that the ceasefire proposal would succeed. The building blocks of a plan had been agreed but the details had still to be worked out, he said, which would take hard work over the coming days. The BBC's Jeremy Bowen on the Israel-Gaza boundary says the end may not be in sight yet, but there are now indications of what the two sides want from a ceasefire. A compromise on securing Egypt's border with Gaza, stopping the movement of weapons, and on opening border crossings between Israel and Gaza could give both Israel and Hamas something tangible, our correspondent says. But the problem from Israel's point of view is that Hamas would then be able to say that Palestinian resistance had forced Israel to lift the siege of Gaza, our correspondent adds, which is precisely what Israel - which seeks a severely weakened Hamas - does not want. Blockade The diplomatic developments came as Israel halted military operations in Gaza for three hours to create "humanitarian corridors" for supplies and fuel, the first of what an Israeli spokesman said would be a daily ceasefire. Map Smugglers' alley key to Gaza conflict Gaza offensive - in maps Points of view on Gaza In pictures: Gaza conflict continues News agencies reported that Gaza residents had rushed out into the streets during the lull to stock up on food and visit relatives in hospital. A Hamas spokesman said that the group would not launch any missiles at Israeli targets during the lull. The respite was brief, however. The Israeli army says it attacked dozens of targets throughout the day and that more than 20 rockets were fired into Israel from Gaza. Israel has been criticised by aid agencies who have warned of a mounting humanitarian crisis for the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, who are unable to escape from the conflict because of Israel's blockade. Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land U.S. Media & the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international Peace media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported. Through the voices of scholars, media critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts, Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land carefully analyzes and explains how--through the use of language, framing and context--the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the occupied terrorities appears to be a defensive move rather than an offensive one. The documentary also explores the ways that U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have become complicit in carrying out Israel's PR campaign. At its core, the documentary raises questions about the ethics and role of journalism, and the relationship between media and politics. Interviewees include Seth Ackerman, Mjr. Stav Adivi, Rabbi Arik Ascherman, Hanan Ashrawi, Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk, Neve Gordon, Toufic Haddad, Sam Husseini, Hussein Ibish, Robert Jensen, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Karen Pfeifer, Alisa Solomon, and Gila Svirsky. Sections: Intro | American Media: Occupied Territory | Hidden Occupation | Invisible Colonization | Violence in a Vacuum | Defining Who Is Newsworthy | Myth of U.S. Neutrality | Myth of the Generous Offer | Marginalized Voices | Is Peace Possible? Praise for the Film "I cannot recommend this documentary too highly. It should be required viewing for every student, for every taxpayer who is subsidizing the Israeli military machine, for every citizen in the United States." - Robert McChesney | University of Illinois "Painstakingly stripping away the myths and inaccuracies regularly passed off as truth by the U.S. media, this film not only reveals the motivations and methods of those responsible for skewing the picture, but also manages to present the most concise and accurate account of the history and implications of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the role that the U.S. has played in the continuation of that conflict that I have seen... This is a very important piece of work that challenges the viewer to think twice before accepting a version of the world that owes more to the special interests of a powerful elite than to any notion of freedom of the press." - Donna Baillie | Director, Women in Black and Secret Hebron: The School Run "Extraordinarily powerful and courageous." - Bo Smith | Boston Museum of Fine Arts "The work is brilliant... touching the heart and stimulating the mind. The script, visuals, and editing are superb -- never have I been so moved by a single film." - Jack G. Shaheen | Author, Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People "...hands down one of the best films I've seen on American media and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict." - Laila Al Qatami | American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee "...enormously intelligent and effective...very well edited and presented." - Paul Beckett | Palestine-Israel Peace and Justice Alliance "...essential viewing for all who care about human rights, for all American taxpayers, and especially for journalists and editors." - Mazin Quemsiyeh, M.D. | Al-Awda Right of Return Coalition "A really clear presentation of the problems of media and Middle East conflict. A superlative film." - Gila Svirsky | Coalition of Women for Just Peace, Israel "Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land is the best, least biased presentation we have of all the issues involved. A must-see documentary." - Chalmers Johnson | Author, Sorrows of Empire "I'm just blown away by the sheer scope of it, the depth, the clear analysis." - Amir Terkel | Filmmaker, Other Voices from Israel and Palestine "While I have always understood that the war here is over words and images, as much as it is over land and bones there, the film really enlightened me about the complexity and profundity of this form of colonization of the mind...[it] will clearly be pivotal in this movement and a priceless educational tool." - Cecilie Surasky | Jewish Voice for Peace "Superbly done!" - Ahmed Bouzid | Palestine Media Watch Tags: ALGERIA Gaza israel army jihad Times Clash air strike london paris obama us blog school germany malaysia cairo indonesia america f-16 bush pakistan india iapan terrorism israeli england CNN AFP BBC AL JAZEERA war FOX CBS ITN New York IDF Palestine canada iran sky news usa Hamas 2009 islam jews muslims iraq algerie australia algeria tv south France 24 arabs maroc sarkozy china russia allah egypt الجزائر فلسطين غزة إسرائيل حماس إسلام جهاد العراق مصر |

A Man Throws Shoes At Bush In Iraq "It was a size 10," Bush joked later. The U.S. president visited the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war off to his successor, Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence and to celebrate a recent U.S.-Iraq security agreement, which calls for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011. "The war is not over," Bush said, but "it is decisively on it's way to being won." Bush then flew to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan for a rally with more than 1,000 U.S. and foreign troops. "Afghanistan is a dramatically different country than it was eight years ago," he said. "We are making hopeful gains." In many ways, the unannounced trip was a victory lap without a clear victory. In Iraq, nearly 150,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq, protecting the fragile democracy. More than 4,209 members of the U.S. military have died and $576 billion has been spent since the war began five years and nine months ago. In Afghanistan, there are about 31,000 U.S. troops and commanders have called for up to 20,000 more. The fight is especially difficult in southern Afghanistan, a stronghold of the Taliban where violence has risen sharply this year. Polls show most Americans believe the U.S. erred in invading Iraq in 2003. Bush ordered the nation into war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq while citing intelligence claiming the Mideast nation harbored weapons of mass destruction. The weapons were never found, the intelligence was discredited, and Bush's credibility with U.S. voters plummeted. "There is still more work to be done," Bush said after his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. It was at that point the journalist stood up and threw a shoe from about 20 feet away. Bush ducked, and it narrowly missed his head. The second shoe came quickly, and Bush ducked again while several Iraqis grabbed the man and dragged him to the floor. In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt. Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam with their shoes after U.S. marines toppled it to the ground following the 2003 invasion. White House press secretary Dana Perino suffered an eye injury when she was hit in the face with a microphone during the melee. Bush brushed off the incident. "So what if a guy threw his shoe at me?" he said. Al-Maliki, who spoke before the incident, praised postwar progress: "Today, Iraq is moving forward in every field." After the news conference, the president took a 15-minute helicopter ride through dark skies over Baghdad to Camp Victory. Telling hundreds of troops he was "heading into retirement," Bush blamed Saddam for the 2003 invasion and said, "America is safer and more secure" than it was before the war. Air Force One, the president's jetliner, landed at Baghdad International Airport in the afternoon local time after a secretive Saturday night departure from Washington. In a sign of security gains in this war zone, Bush received a formal arrival ceremony — a flourish absent in his three earlier trips. Bush soon began a rapid-fire series of meetings with top Iraqi leaders. He met first with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and the country's two vice presidents, Tariq al-Hashemi and Adel Abdul-Mahdi, at the ornate, marble-floored Salam Palace along the shores of the Tigris River. Later, Bush's motorcade pulled out the heavily fortified Green Zone and crossed over the Tigris so he could meet al-Maliki at the prime minister's palace. The two leaders signed a ceremonial copy of the security agreement. The Bush administration and even White House critics credit last year's military buildup with the security gains in Iraq. Last month, attacks fell to the lowest monthly level since the war began in 2003. Still, it's unclear what will happen when the U.S. troops leave. While violence has slowed in Iraq, attacks continue, especially in the north. It was Bush's last trip to the war zone before Obama takes office Jan. 20. Obama, a Democrat, has promised he will bring all U.S. combat troops back home from Iraq a little over a year into his term, as long as commanders agree a withdrawal would not endanger American personnel or Iraq's security. Obama has said the drawdown in Iraq would allow him to shift troops and bolster the U.S. presence in Afghanistan. The new U.S.-Iraqi security pact calls for all American troops to be withdrawn by the end of 2011, in two stages. The first stage begins next year, when U.S. troops pull back from Baghdad and other Iraqi cities by the end of June. Gen. Raymond Odierno, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said Saturday that even after that summer deadline, some U.S. troops will remain in Iraqi cities. Journalists and staff who made the 10 1/2-hour trip to Iraq with the president agreed to tell almost no one about the plans, and the White House released false schedules detailing activities planned for Bush in Washington on Sunday.
